The benefits of saliva collection for research include being non-invasive, ease of frequent sample collection, saving time, and being cost-effective. Bats are recognized as natural reservoirs for an array of diverse viruses, particularly coronaviruses, which have been linked to major human diseases like SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. These viruses are believed to have originated in bats, highlighting their role in virus ecology and evolution. Our study focuses on the molecular characterization of bat-derived coronaviruses (CoVs) in Canada.

Persistent Rhesus Enteric Calicivirus Infection in Recombinant CHO Cells Expressing the Coxsackie and Adenovirus Receptor.

Recently, using a panel of recombinant CHO cell lines, we identified the coxsackie and adenovirus receptor (CAR) and histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) or sialic acid as the minimum requirement for susceptibility to rhesus enteric calicivirus (ReCV) infections. While ReCVs cause lytic infection in LLC-MK2 cells, recombinant CHO (rCHO) cell lines did not exhibit any morphological changes upon infection. To monitor infectious virus production, rCHO cell cultures had to be freeze-thawed and titrated on LLC-MK2 monolayers.

To address these deficiencies, we have established the laboratory opossum, , as a small animal model that complements the mouse and monkey models.

Elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) causes lethal hemorrhagic disease (HD) in Asian and African elephants in human care and the wild. It is the leading cause of death for young Asian elephants in North American and European zoos despite sensitive diagnostic tests and improved treatments. Thus, there is a critical need to develop an effective vaccine to prevent severe illness and reduce mortality from EEHV-HD.

An Ensemble Network for High-Accuracy and Long-Term Forecasting of Icing on Wind Turbines.

Freezing of wind turbines causes loss of wind-generated power. Forecasting or prediction of icing on wind turbine blades based on SCADA sensor data allows taking appropriate actions before icing occurs. This paper presents a newly developed deep learning network model named PCTG (Parallel CNN-TCN GRU) for the purpose of high-accuracy and long-term prediction of icing on wind turbine blades.

Characterization of an Inorganic Powder-Based Scintillation Detector Under a UHDR Electron Beam.

(1) Background: Ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) radiation therapy needs a reliable dosimetry solution and scintillation detectors are promising candidates. In this study, we characterized an inorganic powder-based scintillation detector under a 9 MeV UHDR electron beam. Performance Analysis and Design Principles of Wireless Mutual Broadcast Using Heterogeneous Transmit Power for Proximity-Aware Services.

As proximity-aware services among devices such as sensors, IoT devices, and user equipment are expected to facilitate a wide range of new applications in the beyond 5G and 6G era, managing heterogeneous environments with diverse node capabilities becomes essential. This paper analytically models and characterizes the performance of heterogeneous random access-based wireless mutual broadcast (RA-WMB) with distinct transmit (Tx) power levels, leveraging a marked Poisson point process to account for nodes' various Tx power. In particular, this study enables the performance of RA-WMB with heterogeneous Tx power to be represented in terms of the performance of RA-WMB with a common Tx power by deriving an equivalent Tx power based on the probability distribution of heterogeneous Tx power and the path loss exponent.

Iodine Deficiency Exacerbates Thyroidal and Neurological Effects of Developmental Perchlorate Exposure in the Neonatal and Adult Rat.

Thyroid hormones (THs) require iodine for biosynthesis and play critical roles in brain development. Perchlorate is an environmental contaminant that reduces serum THs by blocking the uptake of iodine from the blood to the thyroid gland. Using a pregnant rodent model, we examined the impact of maternal exposure to perchlorate under conditions of dietary iodine deficiency (ID) on the brain and behavior of offspring.

Vitamin B, B, and B Intakes and Risk of Gastric Cancer: Findings from a Case-Control Study.

Background/objectives: Gastric cancer is one of the leading malignancies worldwide. B vitamins play important roles in DNA synthesis and methylation because they are considered co-enzymes in one-carbon metabolism. There is inconclusive evidence regarding the associations between dietary vitamins B, B, and B with the risk of gastric cancer in different epidemiologic studies.

Viral respiratory infections (VRIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, making them a significant public health concern. During infection, respiratory viruses, including Influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), trigger an antiviral immune response, specifically boosting the inflammatory response that plays a critical role in their pathogenesis. Metaphylaxis or treating the entire population of cattle at arrival with an antimicrobial has been studied extensively in the cattle industry; however, little information is available on the impacts of treating only a proportion of the population with antimicrobials at arrival. The study objective was to determine potential associations between the proportion of animals in a pen treated with antimicrobial therapy with pen performance and nasopharyngeal microbiome. Yearling steers (n = 160) were randomly allocated to study pens (n = 40) and pens were systematically randomized to one of two antimicrobial treatments (META: all four head received tulathromycin; MIXED: two of four head randomly selected to receive tulathromycin).

Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), comprising 8% of human genomes, have potential as PTC biomarkers due to their comparably high baseline expression in healthy thyroid tissues, indicating homeostatic roles. However, HERV regions are often overlooked in genome-wide association studies because of their highly repetitive nature, low sequence coverage, and decreased sequencing quality.

Currently, it is unknown whether MicF acts on other processes to mediate the response to these agents.

Although much is known about the dynamics and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 VOIs and VOCs in the country, information is still lacking on how the cocirculation of several SARS-CoV-2 lineages, along with the lack of vaccination and low adherence to social isolation measures, shaped the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.
