Bayesian model comparison (BMC) offers a principled approach to assessing the relative merits of competing computational models and propagating uncertainty into model selection decisions. However, BMC is often intractable for the popular class of hierarchical models due to their high-dimensional nested parameter structure. To address this intractability, we propose a deep learning method for performing BMC on any set of hierarchical models which can be instantiated as probabilistic programs.

Gut microbes shape many aspects of organismal biology, yet how these key bacteria transmit among hosts in natural populations remains poorly understood. Recent work in mammals has emphasized either transmission through social contacts or indirect transmission through environmental contact, but the relative importance of different routes has not been directly assessed. Here we used a novel radio-frequency identification-based tracking system to collect long-term high-resolution data on social relationships, space use and microhabitat in a wild population of mice (Apodemus sylvaticus), while regularly characterizing their gut microbiota with 16S ribosomal RNA profiling.

The central theme of cavity quantum electrodynamics is the coupling of a single optical mode with a single matter excitation, leading to a doublet of cavity polaritons which govern the optical properties of the coupled structure. Especially in the ultrastrong coupling regime, where the ratio of the vacuum Rabi frequency and the quasi-resonant carrier frequency of light, Ω/ , approaches unity, the polariton doublet bridges a large spectral bandwidth 2Ω, and further interactions with off-resonant light and matter modes may occur. The resulting multi-mode coupling has recently attracted attention owing to the additional degrees of freedom for designing light-matter coupled resonances, despite added complexity.

Modular artificial hip joints are a clinical standard today. However, the release of wear products from the head-taper interface, which includes wear particles in the nm size range, as well as metal ions, have raised concerns. Depending on the loading of such taper joints, a wide variety of different mechanisms have been found by retrieval analyses.

Targeting RNA-binding and modifying proteins via small molecules to modulate post-transcriptional modifications have emerged as a new frontier for chemical biology and therapeutic research. One such RNA-binding protein that regulates the most prevalent eukaryotic RNA modification, -methyladenosine (mA), is the methyltransferase-like protein 16 (METTL16), which plays an oncogenic role in cancers by cofunctioning with other nucleic acid-binding proteins. To date, no potent small-molecule inhibitor of METTL16 or modulator interfering with the METTL16-RNA interaction has been reported and validated, highlighting the unmet need to develop such small molecules to investigate the METTL16-involved regulatory network.

The GTPase KRAS acts as a switch in cellular signaling, transitioning between inactive GDP-bound and active GTP-bound states. In about 20% of human cancers, oncogenic RAS mutations disrupt this balance, favoring the active form and promoting proliferative signaling, thus rendering KRAS an appealing target for precision medicine in oncology. In 2013, Shokat and co-workers achieved a groundbreaking feat by covalently targeting a previously undiscovered allosteric pocket (switch II pocket (SWIIP)) of KRAS.

Altermagnetic (AM) materials exhibit non-relativistic, momentum-dependent spin-split states, ushering in new opportunities for spin electronic devices. While the characteristics of spin-splitting are documented within the framework of the non-relativistic spin group symmetry, there is limited exploration of the inclusion of relativistic symmetry and its impact on the emergence of a novel spin-splitting in the band structure. This study delves into the intricate relativistic electronic structure of an AM material, α-MnTe.

Objective: Rumination is a major risk factor for the onset and recurrence of depressive episodes and has been associated with deficits in updating working memory content. This randomized controlled trial examines whether training updating-specific cognitive control processes reduces daily ruminative thoughts in clinically depressed individuals.
Methods: Sixty-five individuals with a current major depressive episode were randomized to 10 sessions of either cognitive control training (N = 31) or placebo training (N = 34).

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is vital for maintaining the outer membrane barrier in Gram-negative bacteria. LPS is also frequently obtained in complex with the inner membrane proteins after detergent purification. The question of whether or not LPS binding to inner membrane proteins not involved in outer membrane biogenesis reflects native lipid environments remains unclear.

Periodic open cellular structures (POCS) represent a promising new class of structured internals as next-generation catalyst supports in reactors or structured packing elements in separation columns. POCS feature a well-defined morphology and can be fabricated with high reproducibility even for complex geometries by means of additive manufacturing. This results in a uniform and easily controllable flow field, which allows for adjusting the heat and mass transport processes to realize optimal process conditions.

We present a novel concept to treat ophthalmic tumors which combines brachytherapy and low-energy x-ray therapy. Brachytherapy withRu applicators is inadequate for intraocular tumors with a height of 7 mm or more. This results from a steep dose gradient, and it is unfeasible to deliver the required dose at the tumor apex without exceeding the maximum tolerable sclera dose of usually 1000 Gy to 1500 Gy.

While metal-mediated self-assembly is a popular technique to construct discrete nanosized objects, highly symmetric structures, built from one type of ligand at a time, are dominating reported systems. The tailored integration of a set of different ligands requires sophisticated approaches to avoid narcissistic separation or formation of statistical mixtures. Here, we demonstrate how the combination of three structure-guiding effects (metal-templated macrocyclization, additional bridging ligands and shape-complementarity) based on Co(III)salphen metal nodes allows for a rational and high-yielding synthesis of structurally complex, lantern-shaped cages with up to four differentiable bridges.

The pseudo-natural product (pseudo-NP) concept aims to combine NP fragments in arrangements that are not accessible through known biosynthetic pathways. The resulting compounds retain the biological relevance of NPs but are not yet linked to bioactivities and may therefore be best evaluated by unbiased screening methods resulting in the identification of unexpected or unprecedented bioactivities. Herein, various NP fragments are combined with a tricyclic core connectivity via interrupted Fischer indole and indole dearomatization reactions to provide a collection of highly three-dimensional pseudo-NPs.

A frequently addressed issue in clinical trials is the comparison of censored paired survival outcomes, for example, when individuals were matched based on their characteristics prior to the analysis. In this regard, a proper incorporation of the dependence structure of the paired censored outcomes is required and, up to now, appropriate methods are only rarely available in the literature. Moreover, existing methods are not motivated by the strive for insights by means of an easy-to-interpret parameter.

In recent years, the use of natural flax fibres as a reinforcement in composite building structures has witnessed a growing interest amongst research communities due to their green, economical, and capable mechanical properties. Most of the previous investigations on the load-bearing behaviour of concrete components reinforced with natural flax fibres include inorganic impregnations (or even no impregnation) and exclude the use of textile fabrics. Also, the mechanical behaviour of textiles made of natural flax fibres produced as leno fabrics remains to be investigated.
