Adrenergic receptors (ARs) are preferentially expressed by innate lymphocytes such as natural killer (NK) cells. Here, we study the effect of epinephrine-mediated stimulation of the β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR) on the function of human NK cells. Epinephrine stimulation inhibited early NK cell signaling events and blocked the function of the integrin LFA-1.

MoS not only has unique optoelectronic properties realizing photonic and semiconductor applications but also serves as a promising solid lubricant in tribological three-body contacts due to its advantageous friction and wear behavior. Its functionality is defined by elementary processes including strain, oxidation processes, and material mixing. However, these mechanisms were not elucidated for MoS having transferred from the MoS film synthesized at the main body to a steel counter body during tribological ball-on-disk tests.

The multidimensional forced-choice (MFC) format is an alternative to rating scales in which participants rank items according to how well the items describe them. Currently, little is known about how to detect careless responding in MFC data. The aim of this study was to adapt a number of indices used for rating scales to the MFC format and additionally develop several new indices that are unique to the MFC format.

Casasanto (Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 138, 351-367, 2009) conceptualised the body-specificity hypothesis by empirically finding that right-handed people tend to associate a positive valence with the right side and a negative valence with the left side, whilst left-handed people tend to associate a positive valence with the left side and negative valence with the right side. Thus, this was the first paper that showed a body-specific space-valence mapping. These highly influential findings led to a substantial body of research and follow-up studies, which could confirm the original findings on a conceptual level.

The growth of new blood vessels through angiogenesis is a highly coordinated process, which is initiated by chemokine gradients that activate endothelial cells within a perfused parent vessel to sprout into the surrounding 3D tissue matrix. While both biochemical signals from pro-angiogenic factors, as well as mechanical cues originating from luminal fluid flow that exerts shear stress on the vessel wall, have individually been identified as major regulators of endothelial cell sprouting, it remains unclear whether and how both types of cues synergize. To fill this knowledge gap, here, we created a 3D biomimetic model of chemokine gradient-driven angiogenic sprouting, in which a micromolded tube inside a hydrogel matrix is seeded with endothelial cells and connected to a perfusion system to control fluid flow rates and resulting shear forces on the vessel wall.

Research on goal-predictive gaze shifts in infancy so far has mostly focused on the effect of infants' experience with observed actions or the effect of agency cues that the observed agent displays. However, the perspective from which an action is presented to the infants (egocentric vs. allocentric) has received only little attention from researchers despite the fact that the natural observation of own actions is always linked to an egocentric perspective, whereas the observation of others' actions is often linked to an allocentric perspective.

Deploying Cellular Internet of Things (CIoT) devices in urban and remote areas faces significant energy efficiency challenges. This is especially true for Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) devices, which are expected to function on a single charge for up to 10 years while transmitting small amounts of data daily. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has introduced energy-saving mechanisms in Releases 13 to 16, including Early Data Transmission (EDT) and Preconfigured Uplink Resources (PURs).

The aim of this series of tests was to characterize the alkali and water resistance of alkali-resistant (durability) glass filaments, which were optimized with two non-vulcanized formulations based on co-polymerizing styrene-butadiene rubbers (CemFil-SBR1 and CemFil-SBR2). Furthermore, it was assessed which of the two polymer-impregnated multifilament yarns is the better alternative for use in cementitious binders. For this purpose, the impregnated multifilament yarns were chemically conditioned for up to twelve months at temperatures of 23 and 50 °C in 2.

In order to achieve a comprehensive understanding of protein aggregation processes, an exploration of solvation dynamics, a key yet intricate component of biological phenomena, is mandatory. In the present study, we used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and terahertz spectroscopy complemented by atomic force microscopy and kinetic experiments utilizing thioflavin T fluorescence to elucidate the changes in solvation dynamics during liquid-liquid phase separation and subsequent amyloid fibril formation, the latter representing a transition from liquid to solid phase separation. These processes are pivotal in the pathology of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

The development of the most comprehensive universal calibration of molar mass dependences will be presented. For the first time, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) can now provide structure-, solvent-, and temperature-independent molar mass determinations for both small and large molecules. This fundamental theoretical approach provides only one single function which could perfectly describe all molar mass dependences.

Biochemical reaction networks adapt to environmental conditions by sensing chemical or physical stimuli and using tightly controlled mechanisms. While most signals come from molecules, many cells can also sense and respond to light. Among the biomolecular structures that enable light sensing, we selected a light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) domain in a previous study that tested the engineering of novel regulatory mechanisms into a nucleic acid polymerase.

Cancer patients are at a higher risk to develop severe COVID-19 symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to the general population and regularly show an impaired immune response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. In our oncological center, 357 patients with hematological and oncological diseases were monitored for neutralizing antibodies from October 2021 over 12 months. All patients had received three anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations with an mRNA-(Comirnaty/BionTech or Spikevax/Moderna) or a vector vaccine (Vakzevria/AstraZeneca or JCOVDEN/Johnson&Johnson).

Although the long-term consequences of informal care provision have been well investigated, few studies have examined the trajectories of informal care provision among older people and the socioeconomic, demographic, health, and family characteristics associated with them. We use data from four waves of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, with 6561 respondents followed for 6 years (2012/3-2018/9). We used group-based trajectory modelling to group people's provision of care over time into a finite number of distinct trajectories of caregiving.

2,5-Bis(phenylethynyl) rhodacyclopentadienes (RCPDs), as a type of Rh(iii) complex, exhibit unusually intense fluorescence and slow intersystem crossing (ISC) due to weak metal-ligand interactions. However, details on their ultrafast photophysics and ISC dynamics are limited. In this work, electronic relaxation upon photoexcitation of two substituted RCPDs with two -COMe (A-RC-A) or -NMe/-COMe (D-RC-A) end groups are comprehensively investigated using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and theoretical analysis.
