Patients' Perceptions of Importance for Self-Administered Correct Site Surgery Checklist: A Multisite Study.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe and validate the association between patient's self-administered correct site checklist and perceptions of importance for safe surgery.

Design: A multisite nonexperimental, quantitative, descriptive study.

Methods: A convenience sample of 173 adult patients from four different geographical multisite hospitals was included in the study.

Lymphatic Anomalies in Children: Update on Imaging Diagnosis, Genetics, and Treatment.

Lymphatic anomalies comprise a spectrum of disorders ranging from common localized microcystic and macrocystic lymphatic malformations (LMs) to rare complex lymphatic anomalies, including generalized lymphatic anomaly, Kaposiform lymph-angiomatosis, central conducting lymphatic anomaly, and Gorham-Stout disease. Imaging diagnosis of cystic LMs is generally straightforward, but complex lymphatic anomalies, particularly those with multiorgan involvement or diffuse disease, may be more challenging to diagnose. Complex lymphatic anomalies are rare but associated with high morbidity.

A Rare Germline HOXB13 Variant Contributes to Risk of Prostate Cancer in Men of African Ancestry.

A rare African ancestry-specific germline deletion variant in HOXB13 (X285K, rs77179853) was recently reported in Martinican men with early-onset prostate cancer. Given the role of HOXB13 germline variation in prostate cancer, we investigated the association between HOXB13 X285K and prostate cancer risk in a large sample of 22 361 African ancestry men, including 11 688 prostate cancer cases. Virtual Interviewing for Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship-A National Survey.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate both applicant and interviewer satisfaction with the virtual interviewing process for pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellowship in hopes to improve the fellowship interviewing process. It was proposed that fellowship programs and applicants would prefer virtual interviews over traditional interviews.

Methods: A survey developed in collaboration with UT Southwestern PEM fellowship leaders and national PEM leaders was sent to all PEM fellowship applicants and programs at the conclusion of the 2020 interview season and rank list submission.

Brolucizumab-associated intraocular inflammation in eyes without retinal vasculitis.

Purpose: To analyze a series of eyes with brolucizumab-associated intraocular inflammation (IOI) without retinal vasculitis reported to the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS).

Methods: The ASRS Research and Safety in Therapeutics (ReST) Committee analyzed clinical characteristics from submitted reports of IOI after brolucizumab. Eyes with retinal vasculitis or that received intraocular antibiotics were excluded.

Background: Type 2 diabetes in the U.S. is more prevalent in youth of minority racial-ethnic background, but disparities in health outcomes have not been examined in this population.

Contemporary Outcomes After Partial Resection of Infected Aortic Grafts.

Introduction: Aortic graft infection remains a considerable clinical challenge, and it is unclear which variables are associated with adverse outcomes among patients undergoing partial resection.

Methods: A retrospective, multi-institutional study of patients who underwent partial resection of infected aortic grafts from 2002 to 2014 was performed using a standard database. Baseline demographics, comorbidities, operative, and postoperative variables were recorded.

Contemporary Management and Outcomes of Injuries to the Inferior Vena Cava: A Prospective Multicenter Trial From PROspective Observational Vascular Injury Treatment.

Introduction: Injuries to the inferior vena cava (IVC), while uncommon, have a high mortality despite modern advances. The goal of this study is to describe the diagnosis and management in the largest available prospective data set of vascular injuries across anatomic levels of IVC injury.

Methods: The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma PROspective Observational Vascular Injury Treatment (PROOVIT) registry was queried from November 2013 to January 2019.

Surgical Strategies for Bismuth Type I and II Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma: Impact on Long-Term Outcomes.

Background: The surgical approach to treat Bismuth type I and II hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCCA) has been a topic of debate. We sought to characterize whether bile duct resection (BDR) with or without concomitant hepatic resection (HR) was associated with R0 margin status, as well as define the impact of HR+BDR versus BDR alone on long-term survival.

Methods: Patients who underwent curative-intent HR+BDR for HCCA between 2000 and 2014 were identified from a multi-institutional database.

Microsecretory Adenocarcinoma of Salivary Glands: An Expanded Series of 24 Cases.

Microsecretory adenocarcinoma (MSA) is a recently described salivary gland tumor with a characteristic histologic and immunophenotypic profile and recurrent MEF2C-SS18 fusions. Because only six cases of MSA have been published, its complete clinicopathologic spectrum is unclear, and its biologic behavior has not been documented. Here, we present an updated and expanded experience of 24 MSA cases.

Leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder: A SEER database study and comparison to leiomyosarcomas of the uterus and extremities/trunk.

No well-established staging system exists for bladder leiomyosarcoma (LMS), and the current staging system does not include tumor size, a thoroughly validated prognostic parameter for sarcomas. Uterine and extremity/trunk LMS are more common than those in the bladder and have well-established staging systems incorporating tumor size. We aim to improve the understanding of LMS of the urinary bladder by assessing cancer-specific survival (CSS) and comparing LMS at this unusual anatomic site to those arising at other sites using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.

A Mobile Health Intervention to Increase Physical Activity in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Background: Supervised exercise training improves outcomes in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The effect of an unsupervised activity intervention has not been tested.

Research Question: Can a text-based mobile health intervention increase step counts in patients with PAH?

Study Design And Methods: We performed a randomized, parallel arm, single-blind clinical trial.

Haploinsufficiency of PRR12 causes a spectrum of neurodevelopmental, eye, and multisystem abnormalities.

Purpose: Proline Rich 12 (PRR12) is a gene of unknown function with suspected DNA-binding activity, expressed in developing mice and human brains. Predicted loss-of-function variants in this gene are extremely rare, indicating high intolerance of haploinsufficiency.

Methods: Three individuals with intellectual disability and iris anomalies and truncating de novo PRR12 variants were described previously.

ICU Bed Utilization During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic in a Multistate Analysis-March to June 2020.

Objectives: Given finite ICU bed capacity, knowledge of ICU bed utilization during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic is critical to ensure future strategies for resource allocation and utilization. We sought to characterize the incidence and predictors of early recurrence (ER) that occurred within 12 months following surgery for DCC.

No survival benefit associated with waiting for non-lung donor heart transplants for adult recipients with congenital heart disease.

Background: Adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) awaiting heart transplant (HT) have higher mortality and waitlist removal due to clinical deterioration than those without CHD. The selective use of non-lung donors (NLD) to recover donor pulmonary vasculature to assist in graft implantation may be a contributing factor and is supported by consensus statements despite the recent use of pericardium or graft material as an alternative in pulmonary vascular reconstruction. The impact of selecting NLD for CHD recipients on wait time and mortality has not been evaluated.

Relationship Between Physician Burnout and Patient's Perception of Bedside Time Spent by Physicians.

Although the adverse effect of burnout on physicians has been widely documented, studies have shown an inconsistent relationship between burnout and the quality of patient care. We hypothesized that physician burnout will have an inverse relationship with the time spent at the bedside by physicians. In a cross-sectional study, we surveyed patients on their perception of the time spent by their physician on the day of the survey (4 categories: 0-5, 6-10, 11-15, >15 minutes).

Trans-ancestry genome-wide association meta-analysis of prostate cancer identifies new susceptibility loci and informs genetic risk prediction.

Prostate cancer is a highly heritable disease with large disparities in incidence rates across ancestry populations. We conducted a multiancestry meta-analysis of prostate cancer genome-wide association studies (107,247 cases and 127,006 controls) and identified 86 new genetic risk variants independently associated with prostate cancer risk, bringing the total to 269 known risk variants.
