Microalgae are a promising bio-fertilizer that can be cultivated in municipal wastewater, where the organisms perform water purification by incorporation of nutrients and contaminants. Before bio-fertilization with wastewater-grown microalgae can be put into practice, its impact on the leaching of macronutrients and trace elements needs to be evaluated. Here, we studied the leaching behavior of a microalgae-fertilized soil against a control in column percolation setup.

This paper explores how the Schottky barrier (SB) transistor is used in a variety of applications and material systems. A discussion of SB formation, current transport processes, and an overview of modeling are first considered. Three discussions follow, which detail the role of SB transistors in high performance, ubiquitous and cryogenic electronics.

Bioleaching is an actual economical alternative to treat residues, which allows, depending on the chosen strategy, two possible outcomes: (1) a leachate enriched with target metals, or (2) a residue enriched in target metals through the leaching of interfering components (IC). This work aimed to study the metals released by bioprocessing the Panasqueira mine tailings, as a strategy to increase critical metals' relative concentration in residues. Biostimulation of the local microbiota was compared to a bioaugmentation approach using the autochthonous Diaphorobacter polyhydroxybutyrativorans strain B2A2W2.

The antibiotic resistance crisis has prompted research into alternative candidates such as antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). However, the demand for such molecules can only be met by continuous production processes, which achieve high product yields and offer compatibility with the Quality-by-Design initiative by implementing process analytical technologies such as turbidimetry and dielectric spectroscopy. We developed batch and perfusion processes at the 2-L scale for the production of BR033, a cecropin-like AMP from Lucilia sericata, in stably-transformed polyclonal Sf-9 cells.

Integration of a photobioreactor for WWT by microalgae is calculated as a future alternative for cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly nutrient removal for municipal WWTPs. High growth rates and higher biogas yields (compared to conventional sewage sludge) of algal biomass can significantly improve WWTP energy balances. This study focuses on temperate climate zones with changing seasons and discusses energy potential of microalgae-enhanced wastewater treatment for an existing WWTP (32,000 PE) in Central Germany.

However, recent studies show that only half of the published mathematical models of biological systems can be reproduced without substantial effort. In this article we examine the potential causes for failed or cumbersome reproductions in a case study of a one-dimensional mathematical model of the atrioventricular node, which took us four months to reproduce.

Bottom ash (BA) is the dominant residue derived from the incineration of municipal solid waste or refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Costs for the disposal of the material chiefly depend on the leachability of salts and trace metals which may be cut by ageing the BA for several months to promote carbonation via uptake of carbon dioxide (CO). Enhanced exposure to CO sources has been referred to as accelerated carbonation.

Purpose: Three-dimensional (3D) dosimetry is a necessity to validate patient-specific treatment plans in particle therapy as well as to facilitate the development of novel treatment modalities. Therefore, a vendor-agnostic water phantom was developed and verified to measure high resolution 3D dose distributions.
Methods: The system was experimentally validated at the Marburger Ionenstrahl-Therapiezentrum using two ionization chamber array detectors (PTW Octavius 1500XDR and 1000P) with 150.

The discovery of the genome-editing tool CRISPR-Cas9 is revolutionizing the world of gene therapy and will extend the gene therapy product pipeline. While applying gene therapy products, the main difficulty is an efficient and effective transfer of the nucleic acids carrying the relevant information to their target destination, the nucleus of the cells. Baculoviruses have shown to be very suitable transport vehicles for this task due to, inter alia, their ability to transduce mammalian/human cells without being pathogenic.

The increasing medical interest in viral nanoplexes, such as viruses or virus-like particles used for vaccines, gene therapy products, or oncolytic agents, raises the need for fast and efficient production processes. In general, these processes comprise upstream and downstream processing. For the upstream process, efficiency is mainly characterized by robustly achieving high titer yields, while reducing process times and costs with regard to the cell culture medium, the host cell selection, and the applied process conditions.

Unlabelled: Heart rate turbulence (HRT) is a biphasic reaction to a ventricular premature contraction (VPC) mainly mediated by the baroreflex. It can be used for risk stratification in different disease patterns. Despite existing standards there is a lot of variation in terms of measuring and calculating HRT, which complicates research and application.

The production of biopharmaceuticals in cell culture involves stringent controls to ensure product safety and quality. To meet these requirements, quality by design principles must be applied during the development of cell culture processes so that quality is built into the product by understanding the manufacturing process. One key aspect is process analytical technology, in which comprehensive online monitoring is used to identify and control critical process parameters that affect critical quality attributes such as the product titer and purity.

Measured cross sections for the production of the PET isotopes [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] from carbon and oxygen targets induced by protons (40-220 [Formula: see text]) and carbon ions (65-430 [Formula: see text]) are presented. These data were obtained via activation measurements of irradiated graphite and beryllium oxide targets using a set of three scintillators coupled by a coincidence logic. The measured cross sections are relevant for the PET particle range verification method where accurate predictions of the [Formula: see text] emitter distribution produced by therapeutic beams in the patient tissue are required.

Carbonation is a key process in the aging of waste incinerator bottom ash (BA). The reaction with CO decreases the BA alkalinity and lowers the leachability of amphoteric trace metals. Passive ageing over several months is usually performed in intermittently mixed BA heaps.

Accelerated carbonation may be employed to improve the leaching behaviour and the geotechnical properties of MSWI bottom ash (BA). Here we report on a novel method to monitor and evaluate the progress of carbonation in both static and dynamic reactor systems. The method is based on following the pressure drop in the gas phase induced by the CO-uptake of BA and was benchmarked against carbonate contents as measured by thermogravimetry.

Schizotypy is a personality-framework currently considered a comprehensive and useful construct in schizophrenia research and becoming ever more accepted within psychiatry. Thus, it is crucial to obtain a unifying and generally accepted means of its measuring. The three most commonly used psychometric schizotypy inventories, the Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales, Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire and Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences were, however, built upon different theoretical schizotypy models, wherefore comparing results from studies that have used different inventories is difficult and sometimes questionable.
