Background: Burn injuries are a significant public health concern, closely linked to housing conditions and socioeconomic status. Residents in socioeconomically deprived neighbourhoods are at increased risk of exposure to hazards due to older and poorer housing conditions and limited access to fire protection measures. Individual behaviours such as substance use, smoking, and hoarding are often highlighted as primary causes of residential fires, overshadowing the broader socioeconomic and structural factors that also play a significant role in housing safety.

Background: Despite antiretroviral therapy (ART), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive impairment persists. We investigated the association between serum levels of mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF), precursor brain-derived neurotrophic factor (proBDNF), and neurocognitive changes over time among adults with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, seeking to elucidate the interplay between neurotrophic factors and neurocognitive outcomes post-ART.
Methods: Utilizing data from the ACTG 5199 study in Johannesburg and Harare, serum mBDNF and proBDNF levels were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Dolutegravir (DLG) has become a distinctive first-line antiretroviral therapy for the treatment of HIV in most countries due to its affordability, high efficacy, and low drug-drug interactions. However, the evaluation of genotoxic impurities (GTIs) in DLG and their toxicity assessment has not been explored thoroughly. Thus, in this study, a simple, fast, and selective analytical methodology was developed for the identification and determination of 7 GTIs in the comprehensive, explicit route of synthesis for the dolutegravir sodium (DLG-Na) drug.

Metal oxides nanoparticles (NPs), like ZnO or TiO NPs, have been widely demonstrated to act as excellent sonocatalysts and significantly enhance cavitation at their surface, making them optimal for sonodynamic cancer therapy. In this work, embracing the 7 principle of green chemistry, glycerol derivatives (namely glycerol carbonate and solketal carbonate) are tested as solvents and additives for electrolyte formulations. Glycerol carbonate is innovatively employed as promising electrolyte solvent for electric double-layer capacitors with excellent performances.

Corosolic acid (CA) is a well-known natural pentacyclic triterpene found in numerous therapeutic plants that can exhibit many bioactivities including anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor actions. The current investigation explores the chemoprotective roles of CA against azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in rats. Thirty Sprague Dawley rats were grouped in 5 cages; Group A, normal control rats inoculated subcutaneously (sc) with two doses of normal saline and fed orally on 10% tween 20; Groups B-E received two doses (sc) of azoxymethane in two weeks and treated with either 10% tween 20 (group B) or two intraperitoneal injections of 35 mg/kg 5-fluorouracil each week for one month (group C), while group D and E treated with 30 and 60 mg/kg, respectively, for 2 months.

Due to the relevance of lactic acidosis in cancer, several therapeutic strategies have been developed targeting its production and/or regulation. In this matter, inhibition approaches of key proteins such as lactate dehydrogenase or monocarboxylate transporters have showed promising results, however, metabolic plasticity and tumor heterogeneity limits their efficacy. In this study, we explored the anticancer potential of a new strategy based on disturbing lactate permeability independently of monocarboxylate transporters activity using a small molecule ionophore named Lactrans-1.
