Public concerns regarding animal welfare are changing the selection of rearing systems in laying hens. This study investigated the effects of rearing systems on eggshell quality, bone parameters and relative expression levels of genes related to bone remodeling in aged laying hens. A total of 2,952 55-day-old Jing Tint Six pullets were randomly assigned to place in the conventional caging system (CCS) or aviary system (AVS) and kept until 95 weeks of age.

In the last decade, the exploration of deep space has become the objective of the national space programs of many countries. The International Space Exploration Coordination Group has set a roadmap whose long-range strategy envisions the expansion of human presence in the solar system to progress with exploration and knowledge and to accelerate innovation. Crewed missions to Mars could be envisaged by 2040.

The aims of this study were to: (1) estimate genetic correlation for milk production traits (milk, fat and protein yields and fat and protein contents) and fatty acids (FA: C16:0, C18:1 -9, LCFA, SFA, and UFA) over days in milk, (2) investigate the performance of genomic predictions using single-step GBLUP (ssGBLUP) based on random regression models (RRM), and (3) identify the optimal scaling and weighting factors to be used in the construction of the matrix. A total of 302 684 test-day records of 63.875 first lactation Walloon Holstein cows were used.

(aka ) is a yeast able to grow in methanol as the sole carbon and energy source. This substrate is converted into formaldehyde, a toxic intermediary that can either be assimilated to biomass or dissimilated to CO through the enzymes formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FLD) and formate dehydrogenase, also producing energy in the form of NADH. The dissimilative pathway has been described as an energy producing and a detoxifying route, but conclusive evidence has not been provided for this.

Xylooligosaccharide (XOS) has tremendous prebiotic potentials for gut health, but the relevant mechanisms are unclear. Herein, we confirmed the positive effects of dietary XOS enhancing gut barrier in a pig model via suppressing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and IL-8). Meanwhile, XOS increased beneficial microbes Lactobacillus and decreased potential pathogenic bacteria.

During weaning, infants and young animals are susceptible to severe enteric infections, thus inducing intestinal microbiota dysbiosis, intestinal inflammation, and impaired intestinal barrier function. Pectin (PEC), a prebiotic polysaccharide, enhances intestinal health with the potential for a therapeutic effect on intestinal diseases. One 21-d study was conducted to investigate the protective effect of pectin against intestinal injury induced by intraperitoneal injection of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in a piglet model.

Scale-up intensive pig farming can increase profitability by economies of large scale, but it also exacerbates environmental pollution caused by the disordered discharge of manure and sewage. Manure & sewage management (MSM) is critical to mitigate environmental pressure and reuse livestock waste. However, the corresponding MSM measures adopted by pig farmers are multitudinous in reality, due to the diversity of MSM methods and heterogeneity of farmers' characteristics and behaviors.

Cocultures have been widely explored for their use in deciphering microbial interaction and its impact on the metabolisms of the interacting microorganisms. In this work, we investigate, in different liquid coculture conditions, the compatibility of two microorganisms with the potential for the biocontrol of plant diseases: the fungus IHEM5437 and the bacterium GA1 (a strong antifungal lipopeptide producing strain). While the overgrew the in a rich medium due to its antifungal lipopeptide production, a drastically different trend was observed in a medium in which a nitrogen nutritional dependency was imposed.

(formerly known as ) has become an increasingly important microorganism for recombinant protein production. This yeast species has gained high interest in an industrial setting for the production of a wide range of proteins, including enzymes and biopharmaceuticals. During the last decades, relevant bioprocess progress has been achieved in order to increase recombinant protein productivity and to reduce production costs.

While overproduction of recombinant secretory proteins (rs-Prots) triggers multiple changes in the physiology of the producer cell, exposure to suboptimal growth conditions may further increase that biological response. The environmental conditions may modulate the efficiency of both the rs-Prot gene transcription and translation but also the polypeptide folding. Insights into responses elicited by different environmental stresses on the rs-Prots synthesis and host yeast physiology might contribute to a better understanding of fundamental biology processes, thus providing some clues to further optimise bioprocesses.

Direct measurements of methane (CH) from individual animals are difficult and expensive. Predictions based on proxies for CH are a viable alternative. Most prediction models are based on multiple linear regressions (MLR) and predictor variables that are not routinely available in commercial farms, such as dry matter intake (DMI) and diet composition.

Ultraviolet (UV)-screening compounds represent a substantial asset for the survival of cyanobacteria in extreme environments exposed to high doses of UV radiations on modern and early Earth. Among these molecules, the halochromic pigment gloeocapsin remains poorly characterized and studied. In this study, we identified a gloeocapsin-producing cultivable cyanobacteria: the strain ULC007.

Considering the importance of microalgae as a promising feedstock for the production of both low- and high-value products, such as lipids and pigments, it is desirable to isolate strains which simultaneously accumulate these two types of products and grow in various conditions in order to widen their biotechnological applicability. A novel freshwater strain from the genus was isolated in Belgium. Compared to other species, the isolate presented rapid growth in phototrophy, dividing 3.

We investigated the use of different Legendre polynomial orders to estimate genetic parameters for milk production and fatty acid (FA) traits in the first lactation Walloon Holstein cows. The data set comprised 302,684 test-day records of milk yield, fat and protein contents, and FAs generated by mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, C16:0 (palmitic acid), C18:1 cis-9 (oleic acid), LCFAs (long-chain FAs), SFAs (saturated FAs) and UFAs (unsaturated FAs) were studied. The models included random regression coefficients for herd-year of calving (h), additive genetic (a) and permanent environment (p) effects.

The automatic segmentation of ears in wheat canopy images is an important step to measure ear density or extract relevant plant traits separately for the different organs. Recent deep learning algorithms appear as promising tools to accurately detect ears in a wide diversity of conditions. However, they remain complicated to implement and necessitate a huge training database.

One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global ground-sourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels.
