Soil environments are dynamic and the plant rhizosphere harbours a phenomenal diversity of micro-organisms which exchange signals and beneficial nutrients. Bipartite beneficial or symbiotic interactions with host roots, such as mycorrhizae and various bacteria, are relatively well characterized. In addition, a tripartite interaction also exists between plant roots, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and associated bacteria.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a ubiquitous phytohormone, plays important roles in several physiological processes, including stress adaptation, flowering, seed germination, fruit ripening, and leaf senescence etc. ABA binds with START domain proteins called Pyrabactin Resistance1 (PYR1)/PYR1-like (PYL)/Regulatory Components of ABA Receptors (RCARs) and controls the activity of PP2C phosphatase proteins and in turn the ABA-dependent signaling pathway. Fourteen ABA receptors have been identified in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and have shown to be involved in various biological functions.

National Centre of Excellence for Advanced Research in Agricultural Nanotechnology, TERI - Deakin Nanobiotechnology Centre, Sustainable Agriculture Division, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), DS Block, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi, 110003, India.

The study describes a novel and environment friendly route of biosynthesis of nanohydroxyapatite (nHAP). Bacillus licheniformis mediated synthesis of nHAP has been carried out with different phosphate concentrations (2%, 5%, 10% and 20% w/v) of potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate monobasic (KHPO). The synthesis is supported by a two-step mechanism - (i) solubilization of P by organic acids extracellularly secreted by the bacterial strain and (ii) gelation of P and Ca.

January 2020

Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Deakin University, Melbourne Campus, Burwood, Victoria, Australia.

Cr(VI) tolerance in Aspergillus flavus, strain SFL, isolated from tannery effluent was measured and compared with a reference strain of A. flavus, A1120. On solid medium, SFL had a high level of Cr(VI) tolerance (1,600 mg/L), which was 16 times that of A1120 and greater than most previously analyzed fungal strains.

Precise physiological and molecular marker-based assessment provides information about the extent of genetic diversity, which helps for effective breeding programmes. We have conducted detailed physiological and molecular marker-based assessment of selected eight indigenous rice landraces from Koraput, India along with tolerant (N22) and susceptible (IR64) check varieties under control and simulated drought stress using polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000. After exposure to different levels of drought stress, relative germination performance (RGP), seedling vigour index (SVI) and relative growth index (RGI) were significantly declined in all the rice landraces compared to the control plants and significant varietal differences were observed.

Detailed information on structural changes that occur during ontogenesis of Rhizophagus irregularis in axenically developed coculture is limited. Our study aims to investigate the series of events that occur during mycorrhizal ontogenesis under axenic condition through basic and advanced microscopic techniques followed by comparison among these to identify the suitable technique for rapid and detailed analysis of mycorrhizal structures. Three stages were identified in mycorrhizal ontogenesis from initiation (preinfection stage of hyphae; its branching, infection and appressoria formation; epidermal opening; and hyphal entry), progression (arbuscular development; hyphal coils and vesicles) to maturity (extraradical spores).
