Associations between social media engagement and young adults' subsequent onset of ENDS dependence symptoms one year later.

Background: Young adults are more vulnerable than older adults to engagement with online tobacco marketing and to the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) products. Our study examined the longitudinal associations between engagement with pro- and anti-tobacco information on social media (SM) and young adults' subsequent onset of symptoms of dependence on ENDS products one year later, which remain unclear.

Methods: Participants were college students in the Marketing and Promotions Across Colleges in Texas study.

Runway extinction in terrestrial toads (Rhinella arenarum): Instrumental or Pavlovian?

Instrumental appetitive extinction involves the reduction of a previously reinforced response when its occurrence is no longer rewarded. Two experiments with terrestrial toads (Rhinella arenarum) tested whether the occurrence of a nonreinforced response is necessary for response extinction by varying the time of exposure to nonrewarded goal-box stimuli across groups. In Experiment 1, toads that received the same acquisition training (15 sessions, 1 session/day, 300 s of access to water in the goal box) were randomly assigned to two groups.

Remdesivir is Associated with Reduced Mortality in Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19 Not Requiring Supplemental Oxygen.

Background: Remdesivir has demonstrated benefit in some hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on supplemental oxygen and in nonhospitalized patients breathing room air. The durability of this benefit across time periods with different circulating severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 variants of concern (VOC) is unknown. This comparative effectiveness study in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and not receiving supplemental oxygen at admission compared those starting remdesivir treatment in the first 2 days of admission with those receiving no remdesivir during their hospitalization across different VOC periods.

The extracellular matrix is a complex network of proteins and other molecules that are essential for the support, integrity, and structure of cells and tissues within the human body. The genes and each produce extracellular-matrix-related proteins that, when mutated, have been shown to result in the development of brittle cornea syndrome. This dysfunction results from aberrant protein function resulting in extracellular matrix disruption.

Multidisciplinary Delphi Consensus on Safety of Combining Transarterial Radioembolization with Yttrium-90 Microspheres with Systemic Anticancer Agents for the Treatment of Liver Malignancy.

Purpose: To provide guidance, via multidisciplinary consensus statements, on the safety interactions between systemic anticancer agents (such as radiosensitizing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy) and transarterial radioembolization (TARE) with yttrium-90 (Y)-labeled microspheres in the treatment of primary and metastatic liver malignancies.

Materials And Methods: A literature search identified 59 references that informed 26 statements on the safety of Y TARE combined with systemic therapies. Modified Delphi method was used to develop consensus on statements through online anonymous surveys of the 12 panel members representing the fields of interventional radiology, medical oncology, surgical oncology, hepatology, and pharmacy, focusing on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), neuroendocrine tumors, metastatic breast cancer, and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Exploring Menstrual Education via TikTok: A Descriptive Content Analysis.

Purpose: TikTok has rapidly emerged as one of the foremost social media platforms for young adults and adolescents, becoming the most-downloaded app in 2022. With its broad reach across demographics, TikTok may be leveraged as a tool for teaching and destigmatizing topics such as menstruation. This study is the first to analyze the quality of menstruation-related content on TikTok.

Occurrence, distribution characteristics and exposure assessment of perchlorate in the environment in China.

Recognizing the extent of perchlorate pollution in the environment is critical to preventing and mitigating potential perchlorate harm to human health. The presence and distribution of perchlorate in Chinese environmental matrixes (water, atmosphere, and soil) were systematically investigated and comprehensively analyzed, and cumulative perchlorate exposure at the regional level was assessed using a combined aggregate exposure pathway method. The results showed that perchlorate is ubiquitous in the environment of China with significant regional differences.

Novel therapeutic activities of dragon blood from palm tree Daemonorops draco for the treatment of chronic diabetic wounds.

Background: The clinical efficacy of Jinchuang Ointment, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), in treating chronic non-healing diabetic wounds has been demonstrated over the past decades. Both in vitro and in vivo angiogenic activities have been reported for its herbal ingredients, including dragon blood from the palm tree Daemonorops draco and catechu from Uncaria gambir Roxb. Additionally, crude extracts of dragon blood have exhibited hypoglycemic effects not only in animal studies but also in cell-based in vitro assays.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical somatosensory network in typically developing children.

Sense of touch is essential for our interactions with external objects and fine control of hand actions. Despite extensive research on human somatosensory processing, it is still elusive how involved brain regions interact as a dynamic network in processing tactile information. Few studies probed temporal dynamics of somatosensory information flow and reported inconsistent results.

Effect of separation pretreatment on environmental and economic performance of sludge resource utilization.

As a new technology for accurate utilization of sludge resources, sludge inorganic-organic matter separation (IOMS) has attracted wide attention. This study examined the impact of this pretreatment on environmental and economic performance of sludge composting and incineration using life cycle assessment (LCA) and whole life costing (WLC). LCA results indicated that IOMS pretreatment reduced the energy conservation and emission reduction (ECER) values of composting and incineration by 56 % and 76 %, respectively.

The gut microbiota has been implicated in many cancers through the secretion of blood-traveling metabolites or activation of oncogenic signaling. Currently, specific microbial signatures have been detected in the human breast, which are different from other microbial-rich compartments, such as the intestine and skin. Changes in the breast microbiome profile have been shown to positively or negatively correlate with breast cancer development, progression, and therapeutic outcomes.

Higher exploratory and vigilant behaviors related to higher central dopaminergic activities of Formosan wood mice (Apodemus semotus) in light-dark exploration tests.

Formosan wood mice (Apodemus semotus) are endemic rodents in Taiwan. Recently Formosan wood mice exhibit similar locomotor behaviors in the laboratory environment as in the field environment has shown. Contemporaneously, Formosan wood mice have higher moving distances of and central dopaminergic (DAergic) activities than C57BL/6 mice in behavioral test.

Nursing students who identify as men; efficacy and persistence.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of nursing students who identify as men and its correlation with intent to complete their nursing program.

Background: Men are an underrepresented population in nursing, despite mandates to improve the diversity of the nursing profession. There also exists a nursing shortage, that is worsening as nurses retire or change professions.

Environmental and economic analysis of the transformation of paper mill sludge treatment technologies in China.

Paper mill sludge (PMS) is featured with a high content of cellulose and hemicellulose, and using its characteristics to make paperboard can achieve a high-value utilization of PMS, which has attracted growing interest. In this study, currently prevalent landfill, incineration technologies (generating heat and electricity by incineration), and three paperboard technologies (medium density fiberboard, pulp board, and corrugated paper) were evaluated and compared via life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) methods. LCA results show that the PMS-to-pulp board outperforms others with an energy conservation and emission reduction (ECER) value of - 2.

Tailoring Household Disaster Preparedness Interventions to Reduce Health Disparities: Nursing Implications from Machine Learning Importance Features from the 2018-2020 FEMA National Household Survey.

Tailored disaster preparedness interventions may be more effective and equitable, yet little is known about specific factors associated with disaster household preparedness for older adults and/or those with African American/Black identities. This study aims to ascertain differences in the importance features of machine learning models of household disaster preparedness for four groups to inform culturally tailored intervention recommendations for nursing practice. A machine learning model was developed and tested by combining data from the 2018, 2019, and 2020 .

Biologicals in the prevention and treatment of intestinal graft rejection: The state of the art Biologicals in Intestinal Transplantation.

Intestinal transplantation is the standard treatment for patients with intestinal failure with severe complications due to parenteral nutrition; however, rejection leads to graft failure in approximately half of both adult and pediatric recipients within 5 years of transplantation. Although intensive immunosuppressive therapy is used in an attempt to reduce this risk, commonly used treatment strategies are generally practice- and/or expert-based, as head-to-head comparisons are lacking. In this ever-developing field, biologicals designed to prevent or treat rejection are used increasingly, with both infliximab and vedolizumab showing potential in the treatment of acute cellular rejection in individual cases and in relatively small patient cohorts.

Detection and Quantification of Cryptococcus Uptake by Phagocytic Cells Using Imaging Flow Cytometry.

Cryptococcus neoformans, the predominant etiological agent of cryptococcosis, is an encapsulated fungal pathogen found ubiquitously in the environment that causes pneumonia and life-threatening infections of the central nervous system. Following inhalation of yeasts or desiccated basidiospores into the lung alveoli, resident pulmonary phagocytic cells aid in the identification and eradication of Cryptococcus yeast through their arsenal of pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). PRRs recognize conserved pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), such as branched mannans, β-glucans, and chitins that are the major components of the fungal cell wall.

Models for Inducing Experimental Cryptococcosis in Mice.

Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are the predominant etiological agents of cryptococcosis, a particularly problematic disease in immunocompromised individuals. The increased clinical use of immunosuppressive drugs, the inherent ability of Cryptococcus species to suppress and evade host immune responses, and the emergence of drug-resistant yeast support the need for model systems that facilitate the design of novel immunotherapies and antifungals to combat disease progression. The mouse model of cryptococcosis is a widely used system to study Cryptococcus pathogenesis and the efficacy of antifungal drugs in vivo.

Incidental Finding of a Duodenal-Type Follicular Lymphoma in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis Cirrhosis: A Rare Malignancy With Favorable Outcomes.

Duodenal-type follicular lymphoma (DFL) are uncommon, presenting in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, and are generally associated with a benign clinical course. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. However, many patients can be managed conservatively with little to no treatment, as 5-year progression-free survival is greater than 70%, and 5-year overall survival ranges from 80% to 94%.

Background: Evidence on the effects of plantar intrinsic foot muscle exercise in older adults remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an integrated intrinsic foot muscle exercise program with a novel three-dimensional printing foot core training device on balance and body composition in community-dwelling adults aged 60 and above.

Methods: A total of 40 participants aged ≥ 60 years were enrolled in this quasi-experimental, single-group, pretest-posttest design; participants were categorized into two groups, those with balance impairment and those without balance impairment.

A review of distribution and functions of extracellular DNA in the environment and wastewater treatment systems.

Extracellular DNA refers to DNA fragments existing outside the cell, originating from various cell release mechanisms, including active secretion, cell lysis, and phage-mediated processes. Extracellular DNA serves as a vital environmental biomarker, playing crucial ecological and environmental roles in water bodies. This review is summarized the mechanisms of extracellular DNA release, including pathways involving cell lysis, extracellular vesicles, and type IV secretion systems.

Disaster healthcare disparities solutions: Part 3-Recovery and mitigation.

The purpose of this study was to explore the potential solutions for disaster healthcare disparities. This paper is the third of a three-part series that was written by the Disaster Healthcare Disparities Workgroup of the American College of Emergency Physicians Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee. The committee conducted a literature review and chose articles most representative and demonstrative of solutions to disaster healthcare disparities found in a past workgroup product.
