In many low- and middle-income countries, there seems to be a mismatch between graduate skills and healthcare industry requirements due to variability in curricula. With the current increased global demand for competent health profession graduates, harmonizing competency-based curricula (CBC) is necessary to address this mismatch. This paper describes how three health professions training universities in Tanzania and their two long-standing United States partners embarked on developing harmonized CBC for undergraduate medicine and nursing degrees.

Glaucoma is a chronic and progressive eye disease, commonly associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and characterized by optic nerve degeneration, cupping of the optic disc, and loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). The pathological changes in glaucoma are triggered by multiple mechanisms and both mechanical effects and vascular factors are thought to contribute to the etiology of glaucoma. Various studies have shown that endothelin-1 (ET-1), a vasoactive peptide, acting through its G protein coupled receptors, ET and ET, plays a pathophysiologic role in glaucoma.

Purpose: Resectability in localized pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is deemed through radiological criteria. Despite initial evaluation classifying tumors as "resectable," they often have ill-defined borders that can result in more extensive cancer than predicted on final pathology analysis. We attempt to categorize these tumors radiologically and define them as "infiltrative" and contrast them to more well-defined or "mass-forming" tumors and assess their correlation with surgical oncological outcomes.

How exemplars are ordered - blocked or interleaved - can play a critical role in later classification performance. Even so, when students self-regulate their learning, they typically block their study by choosing to stay within the same category on subsequent trials. Our goal was to evaluate the degree to which such decisions to stay within a category are influenced by performance on the previous practice trial.

12-Membered pyridinophanes are the focus of many studies as biological mimics, chelators, and catalytic precursors. Therefore, the desire to tune the reactivity of pyridinophanes to better control the applications of derivative metal complexes has inspired many structure-activity relationship studies. However, the separation of structural electronic changes imparted by ligand modification has made these structure-activity relationship studies of transition metal catalysts challenging to define.

Background: Most justice-involved youth are supervised in community settings, where assessment and linkage to substance use (SU) treatment services are inconsistent and fragmented. Only 1/3 of youth with an identified SU need receive a treatment referral and even fewer initiate services. Thus, improving identification and linkage to treatment requires coordination across juvenile justice (JJ) and behavioral health (BH) agencies.

Syphilis is increasingly prevalent around the world as a result of complex factors. In Brazil, the government declared a syphilis epidemic in 2016 and then set a strategic agenda to respond to this serious public health problem. In a joint effort, Brazil's Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) recommended that novel and diversified health communication strategies should be developed, which the "Syphilis No" project (SNP) later conducted through nationwide mass communication campaigns.

Effect of cellular regeneration and viral transmission mode on viral spread.

J Theor Biol

February 2023

Department of Physics & Astronomy, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, TX, United States of America. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Viral infections significantly impact health and daily life, with varying durations like the short-lived flu versus longer-lasting infections.
  • Traditional models of viral infections often overlook the role of cellular regeneration, assuming quicker resolution than cellular recovery.
  • This research incorporates cellular regeneration, showing that while infection dynamics trends are similar for different transmission modes, cell-to-cell transmission experiences more drastic effects due to restricted access to newly generated cells.

Diffusiophoresis of a Nonionic Micelle in Salt Gradients; Roles of Preferential Hydration and Salt-Induced Surfactant Aggregation.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2022

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Texas Christian University, 2950 W. Bowie St., Sid Richardson Bldg. #438, Fort Worth, TX 76129, USA.

Diffusiophoresis is the migration of a colloidal particle in water driven by concentration gradients of cosolutes such as salts. We have experimentally characterized the diffusiophoresis of tyloxapol micelles in the presence of MgSO, a strong salting-out agent. Specifically, we determined the multicomponent-diffusion coefficients using Rayleigh interferometry, cloud points, and dynamic-light-scattering diffusion coefficients on the ternary tyloxapol-MgSO-water system at 25 °C.

Switchable C2/C3 positional selectivity of thioisatins in a three-component domino reaction: combined computational and experimental studies.

Org Biomol Chem

December 2022

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Organic Solar Cells and Photochemical Conversion, School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Tianjin University of Technology, Tianjin 300384, P. R. China.

The nucleophile-induced domino reaction is a featured reactivity mode of thioisatin, but the C2/C3 positional selectivity towards a nucleophile has not been understood in-depth. In this work, a domino reaction of thioisatin with bromoacetophenone and tryptamine hydrochloride to produce a benzothiophene-fused eight-membered N-heterocycle was described, showing that the Brønsted acid-base form of the amine partner was crucial for the selectivity, because using tryptamine instead of tryptamine hydrochloride gave a different product. Control experiments and density functional calculations revealed that the domino reaction using tryptamine or tryptamine hydrochloride was triggered by a condensation reaction at the C2 or C3 position of thioisatin, respectively.
