Introduction: Individuals who develop new-onset diabetes have been identified as a high-risk cohort for pancreatic cancer (PC), exhibiting an incidence rate nearly 8 times higher than the general population. Hence, the targeted screening of this specific cohort presents a promising opportunity for early pancreatic cancer detection. We aimed to develop and validate a novel model capable of identifying high-risk individuals among those with new-onset diabetes.

Phytomedicine

December 2024

Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Blood-Stasis-Toxin Syndrome, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, China; Zhejiang Engineering Research Center for "Preventive Treatment" Smart Health of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, China; College of Basic Medical Sciences, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how Hesperidin may help alleviate depression-like behaviors by inhibiting ferritinophagy in a mouse model exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS).
  • Key methods include administering varying doses of Hesperidin and analyzing its effects on dendritic spines, tissue iron levels, and metabolic components in blood and brain tissue.
  • Results suggest that Hesperidin could mitigate depressive symptoms by regulating dendritic spines through the inhibition of a specific protein interaction (NCOA4-ferritinophagy).

Article Synopsis
  • - An investigation was conducted on the therapeutic effects of Tanshinone IIA for treating pulmonary fibrosis (PF) using a mouse model, revealing promising results after administering varying concentrations of the substance post-bus bleomycin exposure.
  • - The study employed both in vivo and in vitro models, including A549 cell lines, to analyze lung tissue damage and identified that Tanshinone IIA effectively mitigated oxidative stress and cell death through the MAPK signaling pathway.
  • - Findings indicate that Tanshinone IIA may delay PF progression by reducing oxidative stress and lowering pyroptosis in epithelial cells, offering potential new treatment strategies for PF.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the impact of adding Guanxinning to standard treatments for stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) patients, who still face high cardiovascular risks despite being on medications like statins.
  • After a 12-week trial with 50 SCAD patients, those taking Guanxinning showed significant reductions in several inflammation markers and improvements in endothelial function and blood lipid profiles compared to the control group.
  • However, there was no notable difference in levels of IL-4, triglycerides, or other health indicators like liver and kidney function between the two groups, suggesting that while Guanxinning may help reduce inflammation, not all health metrics are significantly impacted.

Hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid stimulating hormone, and dementia risk: results from the NHANES 2011-2012 and Mendelian randomization analysis.

Front Aging Neurosci

October 2024

Department of Acupuncture Rehabilitation, Hangzhou TCM Hospital Affiliated to Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Hangzhou, China.

Introduction: As the world ages, dementia places a heavy burden on society and the economy, but current methods of diagnosing dementia are still limited and there are no better therapies that target the causes of dementia. The purpose of this work is to explore the relationship between thyroid disease, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations, free tetraiodothyronine (FT4) concentrations and cognitive function.

Methods: This study utilized cognitive function and thyroid data from the 2011-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to assess the relationship between different groups of TSH and FT4 concentrations and cognitive function using weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS), and then used two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) to assess the causal relationship between hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, TSH and FT4 concentrations with dementia.
