Background: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has gained global attention, particularly after Professor Youyou Tu was awarded the Nobel Prize for her discovery of artemisinin as a treatment for malaria. However, the theory behind TCM is often perceived as a "black-box" with complex components and an unclear structure and mechanism of action. This had hindered the development of TCM within the framework of modern medicine.

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors that influence metastasis and prognosis in patients with nodular melanoma (NM), as well as to develop and validate a prognostic model using artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was queried for 4,727 patients with NM based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Their clinicopathological characteristics were retrospectively reviewed, and logistic regression analysis was utilized to identify risk factors for metastasis.

Lupus nephritis (LN), a severe complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), exhibits significant heterogeneity. Recent evidence suggests that non-immune factors contribute to end-organ damage, challenging the traditional view of LN solely arising from immune dysregulation. To investigate this, we employed autoimmune-prone mice receiving intraperitoneal pristane injections.

Objective: Glymphatic system is a recently discovered macroscopic waste clearance system associated with numerous neurological diseases. However, little is known about glymphatic system development in neonates. We sought to evaluate diffusion along the perivascular space (ALPS) index, a proxy for glymphatic system function, in neonates and investigate its potential associations with maturation, sex, and preterm birth.

Anesthetic-induced developmental neurotoxicity (AIDN) can arise due to various factors, among which aberrant nerve cell death is a prominent risk factor. Animal studies have reported that repeated or prolonged anesthetic exposure can cause significant neuroapoptosis in the developing brain. Lately, non-apoptotic programmed cell deaths (PCDs), characterized by inflammation and oxidative stress, have gained increasing attention.

August 2024

Department of Orthopedics, Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

Ferroptosis is a novel form of programmed cell death, distinguished from apoptosis, autophagy, and programmed necrosis and has received much attention since it was defined in 2012. Ferroptotic cells physiologically exhibit iron metabolism dysregulation, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation. Morphologically, they show plasma membrane disruption, cytoplasmic swelling, and mitochondrial condensation.

Background: This study aimed to elucidate the scope and nature of adverse events (AEs) associated with Yasmin.

Methods: Among the 17,035,572 AE reports collected from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database between January 2004 and September 2023, 25,949 reports involved Yasmin. The demographic details, clinical outcomes, and sources of reports were extracted, and four algorithms were used to evaluate adverse drug reactions.

Background: This study explored similarities and differences among Chinese patients and rheumatologists in their attitudes towards and perceptions of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for Sjögren's syndrome (SS), including analyzing factors that influenced their decision making.

Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was used to conduct a multicenter survey among patients with SS at three tertiary care medical centers in Beijing and among rheumatology clinicians at several hospitals across China. Results were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Background: Endometriosis (EMs) is an enigmatic disease of yet-unknown pathogenesis. Disulfidptosis, a novel identified form of programmed cell death resulting from disulfide stress, stands a chance of treating diverse ailments. However, the potential roles of disulfidptosis-related genes (DRGs) in EMs remain elusive.

Background: Managing adult degenerative lumbar scoliosis (ADLS) presents a complex challenge, requiring advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate and compare the efficacy and outcomes of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) in treating ADLS, with an emphasis on surgical methods, recovery times, and spinal correction results.

Methods: We reviewed 42 patients with ADLS who did not respond to conservative treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore the causal link between total hip and knee replacements and the risk of stroke, using a Mendelian randomization approach to analyze genetic data from large cohorts.
  • - Researchers found significant genetic associations indicating an increased risk of both any stroke and ischemic stroke in patients who underwent total hip and knee replacements, suggesting a potential clinical concern.
  • - While the results support the idea that these surgeries may elevate stroke risk, the authors call for more research to better understand the underlying mechanisms behind this association.

Causal relationships between vitamin E and multiple kidney diseases: evidence from trans-ethnic Mendelian randomization study.

Eur J Nutr

October 2024

Department of Nephrology, Chongqing Key Laboratory of Prevention and Treatment of Kidney Disease, Chongqing Clinical Research Center of Kidney and Urology Diseases, Xinqiao Hospital, Army Medical University (Third Military Medical University), Chongqing, China.

Purpose: The association between vitamin E and the risk of kidney disease is well documented in observational studies, but the role of vitamin E in kidney disease remain inconclusive. Here, we evaluated the causal effect of vitamin E on the risk of multiple kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, membranous nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, IgA nephropathy, and dialysis.

Methods: We conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis from large-scale trans-ancestry genome-wide association studies to determine whether there was a significant causal relationship between vitamin E and multiple kidney diseases in European, American, and Asian ancestry.

Malignant ascites is a common complication of advanced cancers, which reduces survival rates and diminishes patients' quality of life. Intraperitoneal chemotherapy is a conventional method for treating cancer-related ascites, but the poor drug retention of conventional drugs requires frequent administration to maintain sustained anti-tumor effects. In this study, we encapsulated doxorubicin (DOX) into Brucea javanica oil (BJO) to develop a water-in-oil (W/O) nanoemulsion called BJO@DOX for the treatment of malignant ascites through in-situ intraperitoneal administration.
