Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated how renal tumor biopsy (RTB) impacted the success of trifecta criteria in patients who underwent open partial nephrectomy (OPN) for renal cancer from 2012 to 2023.
  • Out of 167 patients, trifecta achievement rates were similar between the RTB group (53.3%) and the non-RTB group (54.76%), indicating no significant difference in surgical outcomes.
  • However, the RTB group showed a higher incidence of lymphovascular invasion, suggesting that while RTB is safe, it may be associated with some negative pathology outcomes.

Background: Atherosclerosis is increased in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and early diagnosis of vascular disease leads to better outcome. Our aim was to evaluate whether aortic elasticity decreases in the subclinical stage of atherosclerosis in RA patients without any cardiovascular disease and to determine disease-related risk factors.

Methods: One hundred fourteen patients with RA, 50 patients with spondyloarthritis, and 50 healthy control were included in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine whether the modified 28-joint disease activity index (DAPSA28) or the 28-joint disease activity score with C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP) is better for monitoring disease activity in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) when the full joint count is unavailable.
  • Analysis of real-world data from over 3,000 European patients revealed that at the 6-month mark, DAPSA28 provided similar remission rates to DAPSA, but DAS28-CRP showed significantly higher rates of both remission and response.
  • The results suggest that DAPSA28 is preferable to DAS28-CRP when conducting assessments without a full joint count due to the

To evaluate by using 3D renal volumetric assessment and compare renal parenchymal preservation between patient who underwent open partial nephrectomy (OPN) and robot assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (RALPN). We retrospectively reviewed the records of the patients to evaluate the effect of OPN (23 patients) or RALPN (19 patients) partial nephrectomy on renal parenchymal preservation. The CT or MRI were examined using 3D-Slicer image processing software.

Evaluation of cardiac autonomic dysfunctions in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

BMC Pediatr

April 2024

Department of Medicine, Division of Pediatrics, Subdivision of Pediatric Cardiology, Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine Training and Research Hospital, Turgut Özal Millet St., Istanbul, Fatih, Topkapı, 34093, Turkey.

Background: Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a serious complication of diabetes, impacting the autonomic nerves that regulate the heart and blood vessels. Timely recognition and treatment of CAN are crucial in averting the onset of cardiovascular complications. Both clinically apparent autonomic neuropathy and subclinical autonomic neuropathy, particularly CAN pose a significant risk of morbidity and mortality in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

Introduction: Epidemiologic studies on pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALL) have been conducted to evaluate the possible risk factors including genetic, infectious and environmental factors with the objective of idenfying the etiology. Mannose-binding lectin 2 (MBL2) plays an important role in first-line immune defense. HLA DRB1 alleles play a role in presentation of peptides to T cells and in activation of the adaptive immune response.

In this registry-based study we retrospectively compared outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) for adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) following conditioning with total body irradiation (TBI) combined with either cyclophosphamide (Cy) or fludarabine (Flu). TBI 12 Gy + Cy was used in 2105 cases while TBI 12 Gy + Flu was administered to 150 patients in first or second complete remission. In a multivariate model adjusted for other prognostic factors, TBI/Cy conditioning was associated with a reduced risk of relapse (HR = 0.

27 years of experience with the Fontan procedure: characteristics and clinical outcomes of children in a tertiary referral hospital.

J Cardiothorac Surg

January 2023

Department of Pediatric Cardiology, Florence Nightingale Hospital, T.C. Demiroglu Bilim University, İzzetpaşa Mah, Abide-I Hürriyet Cad, No:166, Sisli, 34394, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: The Fontan operation has improved the survival of children born with congenital heart disease with single ventricle physiology. The most widely adopted variations of the Fontan procedure are the extracardiac conduit, the lateral tunnel ve the intra/extracardiac conduit with fenestration. Despite advances in the treatment and prevention of early and late complications that may develop after Fontan surgery, morbidity still remains an important problem.

The results of haploidentical stem cell transplantation (haploHCT) for patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) transplanted in active disease remain largely unknown. We retrospectively analyzed adult patients with R/R ALL who underwent haploHCT or matched sibling donor (MSD-HCT) as a first transplantation between 2012 and 2020. The analysis comprised 274 patients, 94 had a haploHCT, and 180 had an MSD-HCT.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate quality of life (QoL), disease activity, compliance to treatment, patient and physician preferences for route of administration (RoA), status of health and pain in RA patients starting advanced treatments or needing a switch, and the factors associated with patient preferences.

Methods: A multicentre, prospective, observational and 1-year follow-up study was conducted, between 2015 and 2020, in adult RA patients using advanced treatments for the first time or needing a switch in their current treatments. All the data collected were entered into electronic case report forms.

Purpose: Spina bifida (SB) is a congenital disorder caused by the incomplete fusion of the embryonic neural tube during spinal cord development. In this study, we used Spectral Domain Optic Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) for retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) analyses and compared the results of healthy children and SB patients in a similar age group.

Methods: Our study was planned prospectively and conducted between June 2017 and July 2019.

Introduction: Acromegaly is a chronic disease of increased growth hormone (GH) secretion and elevated insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) levels induced by a pituitary adenoma. HMGA2 (high mobility group A2) and AIP (aryl hydrocarbon receptor-interacting protein) expression levels are related to GH-secreting adenomas, and also a response to Somatostatin Analogs (SSAs). We studied SNPs in miR-107 and miR-23b that related with AIP and HMGA2 genes respectively and control their expression, and also SNP in the 3'UTR of HMGA2 gene.

Background: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has been commonly used for biliopancreatic diseases of patients with normal gastrointestinal (GI) anatomy with a success rate of >90%. However, this procedure may also be necessary in patients with altered GI anatomy such as Billroth II or Roux-en-Y reconstructions. Performing ERCP in these patients may pose extreme technical challenges, and increase the risk of complications.
