Proximal Fibulectomy for Giant Cell Tumours: What Works!

Indian J Orthop

October 2024

Department of Surgical Oncology, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Tata Memorial Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, Maharashtra India.

Article Synopsis
  • Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is the most common primary tumor found in the proximal fibula, and proximal fibulectomy has unique challenges due to nearby structures like the common peroneal nerve and lateral collateral ligament.
  • A study involving 23 patients who underwent this procedure showed favorable oncological outcomes, with no local or distant recurrence over an average follow-up of 90 months, despite some vascular complications and infections.
  • While reconstruction of the lateral collateral ligament isn't necessary and doesn't lead to knee instability, sacrificing the common peroneal nerve can negatively impact functional outcomes, suggesting that tendon transfers might help improve these results.
