Evaluation of antioxidant status of lens epithelial cells in cataract patients.

Indian J Ophthalmol

October 2024

Departments of Vitreo-Retina and Ocular Oncology and Cataract, and Phacorefractive Surgery, Sankara Eye Hospital, Shimoga, Karnataka, India.

Purpose: The main factor that causes cataracts is the increased oxidative stress and imbalance of an antioxidant defense mechanism, which leads to significant changes in the lens microarchitecture. Senile cataract is the most common type of acquired cataracts due to aging.

Methods: We carried out a case-control study in the biochemistry department to examine the antioxidant status (catalase and total antioxidant capacity [TAC]) and lipid peroxidation marker, that is, malondialdehyde (MDA) in human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) of different grades of senile cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataracts.

Background: A large number of patients admitted to the medical intensive care unit (MICU) have abnormal liver function tests (LFT). This includes patients with critical illness with or without preexisting liver disease and patients with acute primary liver injury. There are very few studies which have investigated the spectrum of liver disease, clinical profile and outcome in patients admitted to the MICU.

Background: Ventilator-associated lung injury (VALI) is a devastating complication of assisted mechanical ventilation (AMV) and is one of the root causes of prolonged AMV. Many strategies were made to decrease the effect of the same. This study is conducted to determine the association of prolonged AMV with fluid balance and pediatric index of mortality 2 (PIM2) score.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), if untreated, accounts for lower-limb amputations affecting patients' quality-of-life. Diperoxochloric acid (DPOCL) is known to heal DFU by its antibacterial and fibroblast stimulating activity. This was a phase 3, multicentre, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled, parallel-group study conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topic solution of DPOCL compared with isotonic sodium chloride solution (ISCL).

Case: The authors present a case of retro-odontoid pseudotumor (ROP) with congenital C1 assimilation and C2-C3 block vertebra without radiological instability who presented with cervical myelopathy with spastic quadriparesis. The patient was managed with occipitocervical fusion and C1 laminectomy. She had rapid neurological recovery in 3 months postoperatively and at 2 years had complete resolution of the retro-odontoid mass.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vedolizumab is an antibody that targets T lymphocytes to prevent them from migrating to the gut, making it helpful for treating Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).
  • - Clinical trials and real-world data indicate that vedolizumab is safe and effective for inducing and maintaining remission in CD and UC, with a preference for use in patients who have not been treated with anti-TNF therapies.
  • - While vedolizumab has excellent safety profiles and low immunogenicity, making it suitable for patients with previous cancers or risk of tuberculosis reactivation, cost remains a barrier for some patients.

Background: Assessment of liver disease severity in chronic Hepatitis C (CHC) is essential both in pretreatment and posttreatment period. We assessed the impact of direct-acting antiviral therapy on liver stiffness regression measured by Vibration Controlled Transient Elastography (VCTE) in patients with CHC and evaluated the diagnostic performance of the APRI and FIB-4 scores compared to VCTE in detecting advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis (F3/F4).

Methodology: Retrospective analysis of consecutive patients with CHC who underwent VCTE before and after DAA therapy was done.
