Multiple Idiopathic External Apical Root Resorption: A Case Report of a Rare Entity.

Cureus

August 2024

Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University, Chennai, IND.

Idiopathic root resorption is characterized by the gradual destruction of tooth roots without a clear cause; the possible underlying factors include genetic predispositions, immune system abnormalities, or environmental influences. This case report highlights an unusual instance of a 27-year-old young female patient who presented with multiple decayed teeth; the orthopantomographic examination incidentally revealed extensive root resorptions. Thorough biochemical investigations such as acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine (T3), as well as calcium, were within normal limits, with no identifiable local or systemic factors, leading to a diagnosis of idiopathic root resorption.

Comparative Assessment of Lipid Peroxidase in Oral Cancer and Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders.

Cureus

August 2024

Centre of Molecular Medicine and Diagnostics (COMManD) Department of Biochemistry, Saveetha Dental College, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai, IND.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) are abnormal tissue changes that may lead to oral cancer, making it important to identify high-risk lesions and measure oxidative stress markers like lipid peroxidase (LPO).
  • A study analyzed LPO levels across four groups: oral cancer patients, healthy controls, and two types of OPMD (oral leukoplakia and others), finding significantly higher LPO levels in the oral cancer group (171.86 nmol/L) compared to others.
  • The results suggest that increased LPO levels are associated with greater oxidative stress in oral cancer, indicating that LPO could serve as a valuable marker for assessing tissue damage in individuals with OPMDs.

Electromyography Analysis of the Masseter Muscle's Activity in the Management of Oral Submucous Fibrosis.

Cureus

May 2024

Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Saveetha Dental College, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University, Chennai, IND.

Introduction Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a persistent, collagen metabolic disorder distinguished by the presence of fibrosis of the connective tissue stroma in the oral mucosa with a higher malignant potential rate for oral cancer. This study aimed to analyze the utility of electromyography (EMG) as the prognostic assessment tool in the management of OSMF with conventional intralesional corticosteroid therapy. Materials and methods This study included 20 OSMF cases of age range 20 to 80 years without systemic comorbidities to assess pre-treatment and post-treatment changes with intralesional corticosteroid therapy as an intervention and to determine if it could be assessed using electromyographic study.
