Familial Syringomas-A Case Report.

Clin Case Rep

December 2024

Medical Research Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago Port of Spain Trinidad and Tobago.

Familial syringomas were diagnosed in a 37-year-old female with lesions on the vulva/face/trunk and with periorbital lesions in family members. A correct and early diagnosis of vulvar syringomas is important as these can be erroneously diagnosed as a STI (warts/molluscum contagiosum) which may result in unnecessary psychological distress.

Introduction: Chondroid syringoma or ceruminous pleomorphic adenoma is a benign mixed cutaneous tumor. It is the second most frequent glandular lesion in the external auditory canal, but no cases associated with bone erosion were found in a PubMed search.

Case Report: The present CARE case report details a chondroid syringoma in the external auditory canal with associated bone lysis, and its management.

Article Synopsis
  • A chondroid syringoma is a rare, non-cancerous skin tumor that can have unique characteristics in its tissue makeup, sometimes causing confusion during diagnosis.
  • This report details a case involving this tumor, with unusual bone formation, located on the right upper eyelid of a 60-year-old woman.
  • The patient's tumor showed low levels of cell proliferation (Ki67 index) and after a 36-month follow-up, there was no sign of the tumor returning, highlighting the importance of recognizing this tumor's varied appearances to avoid misdiagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - Syringoma is a benign skin disease commonly found around the eyes, predominantly in women, but rare cases can be malignant.
  • - A case study details a 57-year-old male with an unusual long pedicle syringoma, which was surgically removed and showed malignant features but did not recur post-surgery.
  • - The preferred treatment for malignant exophytic syringoma is wide local excision (WLE), as it typically presents as small skin-colored or light yellow/brown tumors mainly on the eyelids.

Exploring the molecular landscape of cutaneous mixed tumors characterized by TRPS1::PLAG1 gene fusion.

J Pathol

December 2024

Department of Pathology, Institute de Pathologie Multisite, Groupement Hospitalier Sud, Lyon University Hospital, Pierre-Bénite, France.

The histological similarities between pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) and cutaneous mixed tumors (CMTs) found in certain facial regions can create a diagnostic challenge. Molecular findings reveal common genetic profiles, particularly PLAG1 rearrangements in both PA and CMT. Although molecular distinctions have received limited attention, our observations indicate multiple cases of CMTs carrying the TRPS1::PLAG1 fusion.

Soft-tissue Chondroma Masquerading as Chondroid Syringoma - A Case Report.

J Orthop Case Rep

September 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, ACS Medical College and Hospital, Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Soft-tissue chondromas are uncommon, benign tumors found mainly in the extremities, often diagnosed in middle-aged individuals, and can be tough to identify due to their slow growth and similarity to other tumors.
  • A case study highlights a 27-year-old male with a painful, enlarging mass on his toe, which underwent various diagnostic imaging techniques before being surgically removed and identified as a soft-tissue chondroma.
  • Proper diagnosis and management are essential, as these tumors, while benign, can significantly affect a person's quality of life and may require careful evaluation to avoid unnecessary treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Reactive "syringomatoid" eccrine proliferations are similar to syringomas but are less extensive, making it hard to differentiate between the two.
  • There is significant overlap in their histological features, suggesting they might exist on a continuum.
  • This text discusses a rare case of syringomatoid hyperplasia linked with calcinosis cutis in a 54-year-old male, noted as the first of its kind in literature.

Article Synopsis
  • A 9-year-old boy was diagnosed with eruptive syringomas and large lesions of calcinosis cutis that look like calcified nodules under the skin.
  • * The study explores the connection between eruptive syringomas and calcinosis cutis, highlighting their various appearances.
  • * The authors categorize five distinct presentations and associations between these conditions, which has not been previously documented in the literature.*

Article Synopsis
  • Cutaneous mixed tumor, also known as chondroid syringoma, is a rare benign tumor found mainly on the head and neck.
  • It is often mistaken for reactive skin lesions due to its presentation, leading to underdiagnosis by clinicians.
  • A case report discussed a 94-year-old male who was treated for skin cancer, during which a chondroid syringoma on his ear was incorrectly identified as a keloid.

Article Synopsis
  • Syringomas are harmless growths linked to sweat glands, with the eruptive type often seen during puberty on areas like the chest, neck, and abdomen.
  • A case study highlights a 20-year-old African American woman with an unusual case of eruptive syringomas spreading across her chest, abdomen, and both arms and legs.
  • This study stresses the need to recognize varied skin conditions in people with darker skin tones, contributing to better diagnosis and treatment in underrepresented populations.

Reducing Carbon Dioxide Laser-Induced Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation with Prophylactic Photobiomodulation: A Case Study.

Photobiomodul Photomed Laser Surg

May 2024

RoseLab Skin Optics Research Laboratory, Laval, Quebec, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how effective photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is in minimizing postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that can occur after carbon dioxide (CO) laser resurfacing treatment, particularly in patients with periorbital syringomas.
  • PIH affects around 20-30% of patients after CO laser treatment and is characterized by abnormal skin pigmentation following inflammation.
  • The results showed significant reduction of PIH in the area treated with PBM compared to an untreated side, marking a notable advance in preventive skincare methods for laser-induced pigmentation issues.
