Purpose Individuals in the acute and chronic stages of stroke recovery often report more daytime sleepiness (Sterr, Herron, Dijk, & Ellis, 2008) and fatigue that qualitatively differs from "normal" feelings of fatigue they experienced prestroke (De Doncker, Dantzer, Ormstad, & Kuppuswamy, 2018). Speech-language pathologists frequently observe signs of fatigue in their clients with aphasia and perceive that client fatigue impedes therapeutic interventions (Riley, 2017). The current study aimed to quantify daytime sleepiness, exertion fatigue, and physiologically measured arousal and vigilant attention in persons with aphasia.

Columnaris disease has long been recognized as a serious problem worldwide which affects both wild and cultured freshwater fish including the commercially important channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). The fundamental molecular mechanisms of the host immune response to the causative agent Flavobacterium columnare remain unclear, though gene expression analysis after the bacterial infection has been conducted. Alternative splicing, a post-transcriptional regulation process to modulate gene expression and increase the proteomic diversity, has not yet been studied in channel catfish following infection with F.

Satellite telemetry is an increasingly utilized technology in wildlife research, and current devices can track individual animal movements at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. However, as we enter the golden age of satellite telemetry, we need an in-depth understanding of the main technological, species-specific and environmental factors that determine the success and failure of satellite tracking devices across species and habitats. Here, we assess the relative influence of such factors on the ability of satellite telemetry units to provide the expected amount and quality of data by analyzing data from over 3,000 devices deployed on 62 terrestrial species in 167 projects worldwide.

Polyadenylation plays important roles in gene expression regulation in eukaryotes, which typically involves cleavage and poly(A) tail addition at the polyadenylation site (PAS) of the pre-mature mRNA. Many eukaryotic genes contain more than one PASs, termed as alternative polyadenylation (APA). As a crucial post-transcriptional regulation, polyadenylation affects various aspects of RNA metabolism such as mRNA stability, translocation, and translation.

FOXO proteins are a subgroup of the forkhead family of transcription factors that play crucial roles in lifespan regulation. In addition, FOXO proteins are also involved in immune responses. After a systematic study of FOXO genes in channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, seven FOXO genes were identified and characterized, including FOXO1a, FOXO1b, FOXO3a, FOXO3b, FOXO4, FOXO6a and FOXO6b.

Motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) disease caused by a bacterial pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila, is an emerging but severe disease of catfish. Genetic enhancement of disease resistance is considered to be effective to control the disease. To provide an insight into the genomic basis of MAS disease resistance, in this study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL).

Background: Sex determination mechanisms in teleost fish broadly differ from mammals and birds, with sex chromosomes that are far less differentiated and recombination often occurring along the length of the X and Y chromosomes, posing major challenges for the identification of specific sex determination genes. Here, we take an innovative approach of comparative genome analysis of the genomic sequences of the X chromosome and newly sequenced Y chromosome in the channel catfish.
Results: Using a YY channel catfish as the sequencing template, we generated, assembled, and annotated the Y genome sequence of channel catfish.

An experiment is reported that studied the effects of spatial embodiment in augmented reality on medical attitudes about the self. College students (N = 90) viewed public service announcements (PSAs) with overlaid virtual fetuses and X-rayed images of lungs on various interfaces representing embodiment-a two-dimensional screen, a three-dimensional (3D) mannequin, and the participants' bodies (3D). Results indicated that PSA messages with richer embodied interfaces increase the sense of "being there," also known as spatial presence (SP), in sequential order; this leads to increased negative emotion regarding smoking cigarettes and an increased willingness to engage with a cigarette cessation campaign.

Background: Walking catfish (Clarias batrachus) is a freshwater fish capable of air-breathing and locomotion on land. It usually inhabits various low-oxygen habitats, burrows inside the mudflat, and sometimes "walks" to search for suitable environments during summer. It has evolved accessory air-breathing organs for respiring air and corresponding mechanisms to survive in such challenging environments.

The purpose of this publication was to inform surgeons as to the modern state-of-the-art evidence-based guidelines for management of the recurrent laryngeal nerve invaded by malignancy through blending the domains of 1) surgical intraoperative information, 2) preoperative glottic function, and 3) intraoperative real-time electrophysiologic information. These guidelines generated by the International Neural Monitoring Study Group (INMSG) are envisioned to assist the clinical decision-making process involved in recurrent laryngeal nerve management during thyroid surgery by incorporating the important information domains of not only gross surgical findings but also intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve functional status and preoperative laryngoscopy findings. These guidelines are presented mainly through algorithmic workflow diagrams for convenience and the ease of application.

Aims: The current candidate gene and environment interaction (cGxE) study examined whether the effects of an experimentally manipulated psychosocial stressor on self-reported drinking urge and implicit attentional bias for alcohol cues differ as a function of a cumulative genetic score of 5-HTTLPR, MAO-A, DRD4, DAT1 and DRD2 genotypes. The current study also examined whether salivary alpha-amylase level or self-reported anxiety state mediate these cGxE effects.
Short Summary: Individuals with high cumulative genetic risk score of the five monoamergic genotypes showed greater attentional bias toward alcohol cues when exposed to a psychosocial stressor than when not exposed.

Heterochromatin formation during early embryogenesis is timed precisely, but how this process is regulated remains elusive. We report the discovery of a histone methyltransferase complex whose nuclear accumulation and activation establish the onset of heterochromatin formation in embryos. We find that the inception of heterochromatin generation coincides with the accumulation of the histone H3 lysine 9 (H3K9) methyltransferase MET-2 (SETDB) into nuclear hubs.

Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites.
