Background: Training in research ethics supports community research partners with developmental disabilities to take on additional research responsibilities. We worked with an academic-community partnership to develop an accessible research ethics training tailored to the roles of community research partners with developmental disabilities that leads to certification: Research Ethics for All.
Objective: We evaluated the social validity of the educational activities and certification process.

The gene inositol polyphosphate-5-phosphatase D (INPP5D), which encodes the lipid phosphatase SH2-containing inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatase 1 (SHIP1), is associated with the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). How it influences microglial function and brain physiology is unclear. Here, we showed that SHIP1 was enriched in early stages of healthy brain development.

Traffic fatalities are the leading cause of mortality in the United States despite being preventable. While several policies have been introduced to improve traffic safety and their effects have been well documented, the role of transitory health shocks or situational factors at explaining variations in fatal traffic accidents has been understudied. Exploring daily variation in city-specific pollen counts, this study finds novel evidence that traffic fatalities increase on days in which the local pollen count is particularly high.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a betaherpesvirus capable of infecting numerous cell types and persisting throughout an infected individual's life. Disease usually occurs in individuals with compromised or underdeveloped immune systems. Several antivirals exist but have limitations relating to toxicity and resistance.

This study examined associations of compliance rate with the reliability and convergent validity of intoxication and negative affect assessments in experience sampling method (ESM) data in three samples (Veterans, Sexual Minority Men, and College Students). Convergent validity was operationalized as within-person associations between daily aggregates of random in situ assessments and retrospective daily assessments or transdermal alcohol assessments. Measures with lower ICC require more assessments for a reliable aggregate (e.

Taurine, a normal dietary component that is found in many tissues, is considered important for a number of physiological processes. It is thought to play a particular role in eye development and in the maturation of both the muscular and nervous systems, leading to its suggested use as a therapeutic for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Taurine increases metabolism and has also been touted as a weight loss aid.

Objective: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) commonly co-occur. Momentary alcohol cognitions may represent in-the-moment, modifiable risk factors to target in interventions for comorbid PTSD and AUD. However, the role of such cognitions in risk for problematic drinking as it emerges in response to individuals' fluctuating PTSD symptoms across their daily lives remains unknown.

The ongoing increase in the prevalence of obesity and its comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes (T2D) and dyslipidemia warrants discovery of novel therapeutic options for these metabolic diseases. Obesity is characterized by white adipose tissue expansion due to chronic positive energy balance as a result of excessive energy intake and/or reduced energy expenditure. Despite various efforts to prevent or reduce obesity including lifestyle and behavioral interventions, surgical weight reduction approaches and pharmacological methods, there has been limited success in significantly reducing obesity prevalence.

Prenylation consists of the modification of proteins with either farnesyl diphosphate (FPP) or geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP) at a cysteine near the C-terminus of target proteins to generate thioether-linked lipidated proteins. In recent work, metabolic labeling with alkyne-containing isoprenoid analogues including C15AlkOPP has been used to identify prenylated proteins and track their levels in different diseases. Here, a systematic study of the impact of isoprenoid length on proteins labeled with these probes was performed.

Background: Nontraumatic painful upper-extremity conditions (NPUCs) are largely age-related degenerations that affect the majority of adults. Most patients with NPUCs do not seek medical care and adjust on their own. Among those who do seek care, approximately 20% report risky substance use, defined as a consumption pattern that increases the risk of harm to physical or psychosocial health.

Background: Per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is an effective option for treating achalasia. Despite its high efficacy, a fraction of patients remain symptomatic after POEM, and the data on the optimal management of these patients is limited. Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of repeat POEM after a failed POEM.

While lignin has garnered significant research interest for its abundance and versatility, its complicated structure poses a challenge to understanding its underlying reaction kinetics and optimizing various lignin characteristics. In this regard, mathematical models, especially the multiscale kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) method, have been devised to offer a precise analysis of fractionation kinetics and lignin properties. The kMC model effectively handles the simulation of all particles within the system by calculating reaction rates between species and generating a rate-based probability distribution.

Renal transplantation is the most commonly performed solid organ transplant procedure. Monitoring renal transplants with ultrasound is a critical component in the management of transplant patients both in the immediate aftermath of surgery and longitudinally. Many complications are detectable via ultrasound evaluation with relative prevalence dependent on the time since surgery.

Background: Implant free medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction is an increasingly popular technique to address patellar instability. There remains sparse literature on the biomechanical differences between the most common femoral attachment fixation points including Schottle's point, superficial medial collateral ligament, and adductor magnus tendon. This study compared these reconstruction techniques as well as a novel triangle reconstruction integrating both superficial medial collateral ligament and adductor magnus tendon.

The extracellular addition of the STING agonist, 2-3cGAMP, induces an antiviral state that inhibits HSV-1 replication in a cell type dependent manner via the transportation of the cyclic-dinucleotide through the folate antiporter SLC19A1. To establish a successful infection, herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), a ubiquitous virus with high seropositivity in the human population, must undermine a multitude of host innate and intrinsic immune defense mechanisms, including key players of the STimulator of INterferon Genes (STING) pathway. Herein, we report that HSV-1 infection results in the reduction of SLC19A1 transcription, translation, and importantly, the rapid removal of SLC19A1 from the cell surface of infected cells.
