Current guidelines recommend cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) programming, including faster detection rates, longer detection durations, and strict discrimination for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) to prevent unnecessary ICD treatment. This delayed-style ICD programming could lead to a rise in the possibility of VF undersensing. To avoid this risk, an innovative algorithm known as VF Therapy Assurance (VFTA; Abbott, Sylmar, CA) has been developed.

AIMS Public Health

December 2024

Department of Emergency Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Victimization in the United States is common and has long lasting negative impacts for individuals, often disproportionately impacting those of color and from low socioeconomic communities. The Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) model aims to provide comprehensive mental health and wrap-around case management services for underserved victims of crime. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we sought to further our knowledge about the impact of the TRC model.

Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is an uncommon chronic myeloproliferative disorder that is commonly associated with Janus kinase 2 (JAK-2), calreticulin (CALR), or thrombopoietin receptor (MPL) mutations. Pre-fibrotic PMF (also known as pre-PMF or early PMF) is a subtype of PMF that is defined by a lower grade of fibrosis. In this report, we present a rare case of warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA) associated with pre-PMF.

Article Synopsis
  • A new dual chamber leadless pacemaker system utilizes a temperature-based sensor to monitor heart rate response during exercise, focusing on its effectiveness in both the right ventricle and right atrium.
  • An exercise test was conducted 6 weeks post-implant on eligible subjects to evaluate the pacing response of the ventricular and atrial devices, measuring if the rate increased proportionately with metabolic workload.
  • Results showed that both the ventricular and atrial devices had mean rate-response slopes (0.93 and 0.91, respectively) within the acceptable range, indicating that the temperature-based sensor effectively adjusts pacing to meet increased metabolic demands.

Patient Preferences for Features Associated With Leadless Versus Conventional Transvenous Cardiac Pacemakers.

Circ Cardiovasc Qual Outcomes

December 2024

Duke Clinical Research Institute (S.D.R., J.-C.Y., M.J.W., J.S., F.R.J., S.O., S.M.A.-K.), Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC.

Article Synopsis
  • A study examined patient preferences for different types of pacemakers, including new dual-chamber leadless options and traditional transvenous ones, to identify which features are most important to them.
  • Surveying 117 patients, researchers found that half preferred leadless pacemakers while the other half favored conventional ones, highlighting a significant division in choices.
  • Key factors influencing patient decisions included preferred pacemaker type, acceptance of complication and infection risks, and the time since regulatory approval, with many willing to accept higher risks for their preferred options.

Article Synopsis
  • - Acquired factor V (FV) inhibitors are rare conditions with symptoms ranging from mild lab abnormalities to serious bleeding events, making diagnosis difficult due to the variety of presentations.
  • - There is no established standard treatment for these inhibitors, and most patients in studies receive a mix of immunosuppressive therapies and recombinant products.
  • - A case study of a man in his 50s showed that after initial treatments only led to slight improvement, he experienced better results with weeks of rituximab in combination with glucocorticoids, suggesting rituximab might be a viable treatment option for this condition.
