Commun Dis Intell (2018)

February 2021

Neisseria Reference Laboratory and World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for STI and AMR, Sydney; New South Wales Health Pathology, Microbiology, The Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick, NSW 2031, Australia.

The key issues with Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections, in Australia and elsewhere, are coincident increases in disease rates and in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), although these factors have not been shown to be correlated. Despite advances in diagnosis, control of this disease remains elusive, and incidence in Australia continues to increase. Of the Australian jurisdictions, New South Wales (NSW) has the highest N.

Sex Health

November 2020

Sydney Sexual Health Centre, Nightingale Wing, Sydney Eye Hospital, 8 Macquarie Street, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia; and School of Public Health and Community Medicine, UNSW, High Street, Kensington, NSW 2052, Australia.

Unlabelled: Background The prevalence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhoea) in sexual contacts of gonorrhoea has not been established, but limited data suggest that the majority of contacts are not infected. Contacts of gonorrhoea who receive empirical treatment at the point of testing may receive unnecessary antimicrobial treatment for an infection that is known to have multidrug resistance. This study evaluated patient acceptability of non-empirical treatment.

Intoxication can be a factor in unwanted sex, but research on the extent of the issue in both women and men is limited. We assessed the prevalence, correlates, and 10-year time-trends of unwanted sex due to intoxication among a representative sample of 4,279 women and 3,875 men aged 16-69 years in Australia and considered how these vary by gender. In 2012-13, 16% of women and 10% of men reported ever having had a sexual experience when they "did not want to because they were too drunk or high at the time.

Background: Sexually transmissible infection (STI) and blood-borne virus (BBV) diagnoses data are a core component of the Australian National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS). However, the NNDSS data alone is not enough to understand STI and BBV burden among priority population groups, like Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, because it lacks testing, treatment and management data. Here, we describe the processes involved in establishing a STI and BBV sentinel surveillance network representative of Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Services (ACCHS)-known as the ATLAS network-to augment the NNDSS and to help us understand the burden of disease due to STI and BBV among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
