September 2023

The University of Sydney School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Objectives: To explore psychological distress levels, using the validated Kessler 6 (K6), as well as the relationship between demographics and K6 scores, and incidence of mental health crises in a cohort of community-dwelling people living with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI).

Methods: People living with SPMI taking antipsychotic or mood stabiliser medications were recruited from Australian community pharmacies between September 2020 and Februrary 2021 and completed an electronic survey, including the K6 scale. Pharmacists were interviewed and supplied written reports with details of the consultation when participants obtained 'very high' (⩾19/30) K6 scores.

Despite this, little is known about how pharmacists assist and engage with people presenting with signs and symptoms of mental health crises. This study aimed to (i) examine pharmacists' mental health crisis assessment language during simulated patient role-plays (SPRPs) and (ii) explore participants' experiences of participating in SPRPs of Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) scenarios.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of community acquired-acute kidney injury.

Int Urol Nephrol

September 2023

Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney School of Pharmacy, A15, Science Road, Camperdown, Sydney, NSW, 2006, Australia.

Purpose: Published works have reported the impact of a nephrologist intervention on outcomes for patients with hospital-acquired acute kidney injury (HA-AKI), however little is known about the clinical characteristics of patients with community-acquired acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) and the impact of nephrology interventions on outcomes in these patients.

Methods: A retrospective study on all adult patients admitted to a large tertiary care hospital in 2019 who were identified to have CA-AKI were followed from hospital admission to discharge. Clinical characteristics and outcomes of these patients were analysed by receipt of nephrology consultation.

Background: Active surveillance (AS) mitigates harms from overtreatment of low-risk prostate lesions. Recalibration of diagnostic thresholds to redefine which prostate lesions are considered "cancer" and/or adopting alternative diagnostic labels could increase AS uptake and continuation.

Methods: We searched PubMed and EMBASE to October 2021 for evidence on: (1) clinical outcomes of AS, (2) subclinical prostate cancer at autopsy, (3) reproducibility of histopathological diagnosis, and (4) diagnostic drift.

Introduction: Goal planning is routinely employed in mental health service delivery to identify priorities for treatment and support the achievement and evaluation of outcomes. Previous systematic reviews of the literature have focused on the use of goal planning in a range of physical and cognitive disability settings, but there is a lack of information regarding how goal planning is used in mental healthcare.

Aims: This systematic integrative review aimed to understand the types of goals, effectiveness of goal planning, the experience of goal planning and barriers and facilitators to effective goal planning in mental healthcare settings.

Perinatal Women's Views of Pharmacist-Delivered Perinatal Depression Screening: A Qualitative Study.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

December 2022

The University of Sydney School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW 2050, Australia.

Internationally, 20% of women experience perinatal depression (PND). Healthcare providers including general practitioners and midwives are critical in providing PND screening and support; however, the current workforce is unable to meet growing demands for PND care. As accessible and trusted primary healthcare professionals, pharmacists could provide PND care to complement existing services, thereby contributing to early detection and intervention.

Introduction: Evidence suggests that, while a preference for functional Health Literacy (HL) outcome measurement exists, researchers are converging towards more all-encompassing instruments. While this claim is present in the HL field, minimal research has comprehensively explored the state of community HL measurement practices at the direct and proxy level. The almost exclusive focus on direct, as opposed to proxy, community HL measurement indicates a review of progress is needed.

Background: The amount of data in health care is rapidly rising, leading to multiple datasets generated for any given individual. Data integration involves mapping variables in different datasets together to form a combined dataset which can then be used to conduct different types of analyses. However, with increasing numbers of variables, manual mapping of a dataset can become inefficient.

Background: Pediatric emergency intubation is a high-acuity, low-occurrence procedure. Despite advances in technology, the success of this procedure remains low and adverse events are very high. Prospective observational studies in children have demonstrated improved success with the use of video laryngoscopy (VL) compared with direct laryngoscopy, although reported first-pass success (FPS) rates are lower than that reported for adults.

Perinatal depression (PND) screening recommendations are made by national, state-based and professional organisations; however, there is disagreement regarding screening timing, provider responsible, screening setting, screening tool as well as the follow-up and referral pathways required post-screening. This systematic review aimed to identify, describe and compare PND screening recommendations from member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Publications were identified through systematically searching PubMed, Google and the Guidelines International Network (GIN).

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on how adding 2-methylimidazole (2-MIM) affects the fluorescence of a specific compound called ethyl-7-hydroxy-2-oxo-2-chromene-3-carboxylate using low-cost computational methods and X-ray data.
  • It found that at low concentrations of 2-MIM, the fluorescence intensity decreases, but at higher concentrations (above 1:10), the excitation wavelength shifts and the emission intensity significantly increases due to deprotonation of a phenolic group in the compound.
  • The research also revealed that the interactions between 2-MIM and the fluorophore, specifically increased vibronic coupling and charge transfer, led to these fluorescence changes, alongside
