Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are large structures composed of chromatin, histones and granule-derived proteins released extracellularly by neutrophils. They are generally considered to be a part of the antimicrobial defense strategy, preventing the dissemination of pathogens. However, overproduction of NETs or their ineffective clearance can drive various pathologies, many of which are associated with advanced age and involve uncontrolled inflammation, oxidative, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative stress as underlying mechanisms.

All cells are innately equipped with systems to detect and respond to electrical inputs in the form of reactive oxygen species, redox signaling, or membrane depolarization through ion exchange. Electrogenetics aims to leverage these cellular systems to create interfaces between biology and electronics, in order to achieve levels of precision in spatiotemporal control of gene and protein expression that are not possible with chemo-, opto-, or thermogenetics. In this review, we discuss the impact, challenges, and prospects of electrogenetics in the context of recent cutting-edge applications.

When such dams break, devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) can occur in high mountain environments with catastrophic effects on populations and infrastructure. To understand the occurrence of GLOFs in space and time, build frequency-magnitude relationships for disaster risk reduction or identify regional links between GLOF frequency and climate warming, comprehensive databases are critically needed.

Novel Reconstruction Method Using the Double-Arm Vascularized Fibula Flap and TriLock Bridging Plate System for Segmental Mandibulectomy Including the Anterior Border of the Mandibular Ramus.

This study aimed to develop a novel reconstruction method for segmental mandibulectomy. In the authors' opinion, reconstruction of the anterior border of the mandibular ramus using a double-arm vascularized fibular flap is important to prevent deformity due to buccal depression and the accumulation of food debris, thereby eliminating masticatory dead space that cannot be filled with prostheses such as implants or dentures. Using conventional reconstruction plates, the reconstructed bone positioned at the anterior border of the mandibular ramus required either fixing with only 1 screw or using 2 plates for stable fixation, making it difficult to position the plates stably.

The current understanding of primate natural action organization derives from laboratory experiments in restrained contexts (RCs) under the assumption that this knowledge generalizes to freely moving contexts (FMCs). In this work, we developed a neurobehavioral platform to enable wireless recording of the same premotor neurons in both RCs and FMCs. Neurons often encoded the same hand and mouth actions differently in RCs and FMCs.

Especially in the high-risk group, some patients fail to derive optimal or any benefits from TAVI, leading to the risk of futile interventions. Despite consensus among several experts regarding the importance of recognizing and anticipating such interventions, the definition, and predictive criteria for futility in TAVI remain ambiguous.

Despite the wide use of zebra finches as an animal model to study vocal learning and production, little is known about impacts on their welfare caused by routine experimental manipulations such as changing their social context. Here we conduct a post-hoc analysis of singing rate, an indicator of positive welfare, to gain insights into stress caused by social isolation, a common experimental manipulation. We find that isolation in an unfamiliar environment reduces singing rate for several days, indicating the presence of an acute stressor.

The bacterial type 6 secretion system (T6SS) is a toxin-injecting nanoweapon that mediates competition in plant- and animal-associated microbial communities. Objective: Brief hospital course (BHC) summaries are clinical documents that summarize a patient's hospital stay. While large language models (LLMs) depict remarkable capabilities in automating real-world tasks, their capabilities for healthcare applications such as synthesizing BHCs from clinical notes have not been shown. We introduce a novel preprocessed dataset, the MIMIC-IV-BHC, encapsulating clinical note and BHC pairs to adapt LLMs for BHC synthesis.
