Structural advancements in underwater vehicle design necessitate lightweight materials, driving interest in Fiber Metal Laminates (FMLs), known for their high specific strength, stiffness, and corrosion resistance. This study investigates the vibration response of FMLs through combined experimental and numerical analyses, specifically evaluating the novel effects of layerwise acoustic impedance matching on vibration damping within the 0-500 Hz frequency range, which aligns with ocean current frequencies. Various FML stackup sequences were characterized through ASTM E756-05 compliant experiments and ANSYS Harmonic Response simulations.

Background: Despite the implementation of prevention strategies, family violence continues to be a prevalent issue worldwide. Current strategies to reduce family violence have demonstrated mixed success and innovative approaches are needed urgently to prevent the occurrence of family violence. Incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into prevention strategies is gaining research attention, particularly the use of textual or voice signal data to detect individuals at risk of perpetrating family violence.

Background: Workplace culture is theorized to involve a combination of elements such as assumptions, beliefs, and values. An effective workplace culture is safe and person-centred, which enables staff to flourish. However, there is no empirical evidence describing or informing workplace culture for forensic mental health settings.

Natural soundscapes enhance mood recovery amid anthropogenic noise pollution.

PLoS One

November 2024

School of Applied Sciences, College of Health, Science and Society, University of the West of England, Bristol, United Kingdom.

Article Synopsis
  • Urban areas face a lack of green spaces and increasing noise pollution, negatively affecting residents' health and wellbeing.
  • Our study explores how natural sounds (like bird songs) and different traffic speeds (20 mi/h and 40 mi/h) influence mood, revealing that natural sounds reduce anxiety while traffic noise raises stress levels.
  • We suggest that lowering traffic speeds and incorporating technology like electric vehicles, alongside urban planning for green spaces, could help combat noise pollution and improve urban living conditions.

The influence of water polarization on slip friction at charged interfaces.

J Chem Phys

November 2024

Department of Mathematics, School of Science, Computing and Engineering Technologies, Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn, Victoria 3122, Australia.

The present study employs equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to explore the potential mechanism for controlling friction by applying electrostatic fields in nanoconfined aqueous electrolytes. The slip friction coefficient demonstrates a gradual increase corresponding to the surface charge density for pure water and aqueous electrolytes, exhibiting a similar trend across both nanochannel walls. An expression is formulated to rationalize the observed slip friction behavior, describing the effect of the electric field on the slip friction coefficient.

A composite material comprising expanded polystyrene (EPS), granulated tyre rubber (GTR), and a compatibilizer is demonstrated as a possible replacement for fine and coarse agglomerates in mortar and concrete systems, respectively. Two different polymer blending processes (solvent/low shear blending and melt/high shear blending) are used, and the resulting composite material utilized as aggregate to replace sand and cement for mortar and concrete block development. Critical properties such as workability, compressive and flexural strengths, water absorption, bulk density, and porosity are measured before and after aggregate replacement.

Toward Improving Human Training by Combining Wearable Full-Body IoT Sensors and Machine Learning.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2024

School of Science, Computing and Engineering Technologies, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne 3122, Australia.

This paper proposes DigitalUpSkilling, a novel IoT- and AI-based framework for improving and personalising the training of workers who are involved in physical-labour-intensive jobs. DigitalUpSkilling uses wearable IoT sensors to observe how individuals perform work activities. Such sensor observations are continuously processed to synthesise an avatar-like kinematic model for each worker who is being trained, referred to as the worker's digital twins.

Simple Scaling as a Tool to Help Assess the Closure-Free / Versus Δ Curve in a Range of Materials.

Materials (Basel)

November 2024

Centre of Expertise for Structural Mechanics, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Monash University, Clayton, VIC 3800, Australia.

Recent studies have proposed a simple formula, which is based on Elber's original approach to account for -ratio effects, for determining the crack closure-free Δ versus / curve from the measured -ratio-dependent Δ versus / curves. This approach, which is termed "Simple Scaling," has been shown to collapse the various -ratio-dependent curves onto a single curve. Indeed, this approach has been verified for a number of tests on metals, polymers, and a medium-entropy alloy.

Workplace Structures and Culture That Support the Wellbeing of People with an Intellectual Disability.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

October 2024

Centre for Social Impact, School of Business, Law and Entrepreneurship, Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn 3122, Australia.

There is little research on health-promoting workplace settings focused on people with an intellectual disability. There are a range of supported and open employment workplaces where people with an intellectual disability work, and this is an important setting that can influence health and wellbeing outcomes. The health promotion research that has been conducted with people with an intellectual disability has been programmatic in focus and lacks a broader settings and ecological perspective.

Bivalent Fears of Evaluation in Social Anxiety: Evaluation of an Extended Psychoevolutionary Model.

Eur J Investig Health Psychol Educ

November 2024

Department of Psychology, School of Health Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, VIC 3122, Australia.

Fears of negative evaluation (FNEs) and fears of positive evaluation (FPEs) comprise a bivalent model of evaluation that can explain the aetiology and maintenance of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). In this study, we examined an extended version of this model which incorporates two related cognitive processes (concerns about reprisal and discounting of positive outcomes) as partial mediators of the effects of FNEs and FPEs. We built on earlier work by including a broader measure of social anxiety across different social situations and comparing models for groups of participants with and without probable SAD.

Workforce development in private practice dietetics: experiences and perceptions of experienced practitioners.

J Hum Nutr Diet

February 2025

Department of Nursing and Allied Health, School of Health Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia.

Background: Changes in Australian health policies and public funding models have increased the demand for private dietetics services over the past two decades. Limited available workforce data indicate that over half of the Australian dietetics workforce works in private practice at some level, with approximately 30%-50% of dietitians now entering private practice as new graduates. These changes in the sector have implications for dietetics workforce development.

The endogenous circadian rhythm (approximately 24 h) allows plants to adapt to daily light and temperature variations. Although the mechanism of photoperiod entrainment has been studied extensively, entrainment to diurnal temperature rhythms remains poorly understood. Here we investigate the stochastic entrainment of the circadian clock in the model crop tomato, subject to different thermoperiods.

Within the schizophrenia-spectrum disorder literature, the cognitive correlates of multisensory and non-auditory hallucinations remain largely unknown. This scoping review aimed to map and synthesise research that explored relationships between cognition and non-auditory and multisensory hallucinations in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.
