Background: We present a checklist of annelids from recent United Kingdom Seabed Resources (UKSR) expeditions (Abyssal Baseline - ABYSSLINE project) to the eastern abyssal Pacific Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) polymetallic nodule fields, based on DNA species delimitation, including imagery of voucher specimens, Darwin Core (DwC) data and links to vouchered specimen material and new GenBank sequence records. This paper includes genetic and imagery data for 129 species of annelids from 339 records and is restricted to material that is, in general, in too poor a condition to describe formally at this time, but likely contains many species new to science. We make these data available both to aid future taxonomic studies in the CCZ that will be able to link back to these genetic data and specimens and to better underpin ongoing ecological studies of potential deep-sea mining impacts using the principles of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusuable) data and specimens that will be available for all.

The DNA taxonomy of six species of the annelid family Lumbrineridae collected from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the Central Pacific, an area of potential mining interest for polymetallic nodules, is presented. Lumbrinerids are an ecologically important and understudied annelid family within the deep sea, with many species still undescribed. This study aims to document the taxonomy and biodiversity of the CCZ using specimens collected from the UK-1, OMS, and NORI-D exploration contract areas and Areas of Particular Environmental Interest.

There is a growing interest in the exploitation of deep-sea mineral deposits, particularly on the abyssal seafloor of the central Pacific Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), which is rich in polymetallic nodules. In order to effectively manage potential exploitation activities, a thorough understanding of the biodiversity, community structure, species ranges, connectivity, and ecosystem functions across a range of scales is needed. The benthic megafauna plays an important role in the functioning of deep-sea ecosystems and represents an important component of the biodiversity.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses the confusion around certain species, emphasizing that distinct morphological traits can help differentiate them, such as petal shape and seed size.
  • The author argues that two species previously thought to be the same as others are actually taxonomic synonyms of them.
  • This argument is backed by extensive analysis of 21 morphological characteristics, reinforcing the validity of these taxonomic classifications.

Article Synopsis
  • Regular physical activity provides health benefits for those with chronic spinal pain and insomnia, yet many reduce their activity levels, leading to worsening conditions.
  • This study aimed to identify predictors of physical activity levels before and after a 14-week physical therapy program for individuals with nonspecific chronic spinal pain and insomnia.
  • Factors influencing baseline physical activity included fatigue levels, emotional functioning limitations, sleep quality, and body mass index, but no clear predictors for change in activity levels after treatment were found.

When mycologists describe new species, not all relevant information is provided (clearly enough).

Taxonomic mycology struggles with what seems to be a perpetual shortage of resources. Logically, fungal taxonomists should therefore leverage every opportunity to highlight and visualize the importance of taxonomic work, the usefulness of taxonomic data far beyond taxonomy, and the integrative and collaborative nature of modern taxonomy at large. Is mycology really doing that, though? In this study, we went through ten years' worth (2009-2018) of species descriptions of extant fungal taxa - 1,097 studies describing at most ten new species - in five major mycological journals plus one plant journal.

With the aim of supporting ecological analyses in butterflies, the third most species-rich superfamily of Lepidoptera, this paper presents the first time-calibrated phylogeny of all 496 extant butterfly species in Europe, including 18 very localised endemics for which no public DNA sequences had been available previously. It is based on a concatenated alignment of the mitochondrial gene COI and up to eleven nuclear gene fragments, using Bayesian inferences of phylogeny. To avoid analytical biases that could result from our region-focussed sampling, our European tree was grafted upon a global genus-level backbone butterfly phylogeny for analyses.

Background: The role of saliva composition and dietary sugar in development of infundibular caries in equine cheek teeth is not fully understood. This study analysed electrolyte and urea concentrations in saliva in relation to different forage and measured pH changes after sucrose application in vivo in sound and carious cheek teeth.

Results: Forage type had no effect on the equine saliva electrolyte concentrations, which varied considerably both intra- and inter-individually.

The development of accelerometers has revolutionized measurement of physical activity, and they are used to a large extent in research and have started to be implemented into clinical settings. However, achievement of reliable outcomes requires good methodological knowledge and skills by the user. Otherwise, significant measurement errors may occur, interfering with assessment of the physical activity level in the population, group differences, associations with health parameters or effect of treatments.

The Swedish Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency (TLV) is the government body responsible for deciding whether outpatient drugs are to be included in the pharmaceutical benefits scheme. This paper analyzed all decisions made by TLV between 2005 and 2011 in order to investigate how the cost-effectiveness of a drug and the severity of the disease the drug targets affected the likelihood of subsidy of a drug. We find that TLV places significant weight on both the cost-effectiveness, measured as the cost per Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY), and disease severity.

The objective of this study was to overview high-qualitative systematic reviews to synthesize the evidence for associations between sedentary behavior and health outcomes in adults. There is evidence for a cross-sectional association between accelerometer measured sedentary time and poorer insulin sensitivity, and an association between sedentary breaks and BMI/waist circumference and triglycerides. Based on intervention studies (only randomized cross-over), there is evidence for an association between prolonged sitting and some markers for poorer cardiovascular health, but it is unclear whether this may be generalized to adults in general.
