Introduction: Treatment decisions are challenging in older adults with solid tumors. Geriatric 8 (G8)-screening and comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) are important but additional methods are needed. We examined the association of computed tomography (CT)-derived high visceral adipose tissue index (VATI) with or without low skeletal muscle index (SMI) on three-month and overall survival (OS).

As patients with solid (non-hematological) cancers and a life expectancy of <3 months rarely benefit from oncological treatment, we examined whether the CT-determined loss of muscle mass is associated with an impaired 3-month overall survival (OS) in frail ≥75-year-old patients with cancer. Frailty was assessed with G8-screening and comprehensive geriatric assessment in older adults at risk of frailty. The L3-level skeletal (SMI) and psoas (PMI) muscle indexes were determined from routine CT scans.

Older adults are underrepresented in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) studies and thus may not receive optimal treatment, especially not metastasectomies. The prospective Finnish real-life RAXO-study included 1086 any organ mCRC patients. We assessed repeated centralized resectability, overall survival (OS), and quality of life (QoL) using 15D and EORTC QLQ-C30/CR29.

Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is frequently monitored to detect colorectal cancer (CRC) recurrence after surgery. The clinical significance of transiently increased CEA during adjuvant chemotherapy is poorly understood. Serum CEA, CA19-9, CRP, YKL-40, and IL-6 were measured before, during, and after adjuvant 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy in the randomised LIPSYT study population.

Metastasectomy and/or local ablative therapy in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients often provide long-term survival. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data in curatively treated mCRC are limited. In the RAXO-study that evaluated repeated resectability, a multi-cross-sectional HRQoL substudy with 15D, EQ-5D-3L, QLQ-C30, and QLQ-CR29 questionnaires was conducted.

In the past decade, immunotherapy with checkpoint inhibitors has revolutionized the field of oncology. Checkpoint inhibitors have been approved for several types of cancer and thousands of patients in Sweden now receive oncological immunotherapy annually. Immune-related side effects are common and can occur in almost any organ.

Aims: Prevention guidelines have identified the management of obese patients as an important priority to reduce the burden of incident and recurrent cardiovascular disease. Still, studies have demonstrated that over 80% of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) fail to achieve their weight target. Here, we describe advice received and actions reported by overweight CHD patients since being discharged from hospital and how weight changes relate to their risk profile.

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease that leads to premature death. The disease is caused by a pathological CAG triplet expansion in the huntingtin gene. The disease is most common in Western populations, with onset in middle age and causing progressive motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. As many as 250,000 people in Sweden will have a dementia disease in 2050. The »amyloid cascade hypothesis« is a common model which explains how β-amyloid affects the function of the nerve cells.

Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Lewy bodies with alpha-synuclein as the major component and loss of dopaminergic nerve cells in substantia nigra are neuropathological features. The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is based on the occurrence of bradykinesia, rigidity and resting tremor.

Ataxias constitute a group of heterogeneous diseases with overlapping symptoms. The clinical investigation should primarily seek for treatable conditions such as neurometabolic disorders and autoimmune diseases. Rapid progression is often characteristic for paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, autoimmune diseases or multiple system atrophy (MSA).

New guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) recommend that »chronic coronary syndrome« (CCS) replaces the previously used term »stable coronary artery disease«. The background for this recommendation is that the coronary artery atherosclerosis process is a dynamic process that, although stable under long periods, may become unstable and result in an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). In this commentary, the Working Group on Coronary Artery Disease of the Swedish Society of Cardiology points out what is new in the 2019 CCS guidelines.

Background: The present study (VINGEM) is the first randomised trial comparing vinflunine/gemcitabine (VG) to standard carboplatin/gemcitabine (CG) in patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma (aUC) ineligible for treatment with cisplatin.

Patients And Methods: Patients with aUC, creatinine clearance 30-60 ml/min, performance status ≤1 and no prior chemotherapy for metastatic disease were randomised to the experimental arm (vinflunine 280 or 250 mg/m day 1, gemcitabine 1000 mg/m days 1 and 8, q21 days) or the control arm (carboplatin AUC 4.5 day 1, gemcitabine 1000 mg/m days 1 and 8, q21 days).

Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery Conventional mitral valve surgery is performed through a full median sternotomy. Minimal invasive mitral valve surgery was introduced in the mid 1990s and is performed through a right mini-thoracotomy. Minimal access mitral valve surgery has grown in popularity and by reducing surgical trauma potential benefits include decreased postoperative bleeding and pain, reduced incidence of sternal wound infections and shortened recovery period after surgery.
