Purpose: To investigate the predictive value of RECIST response within 3, 6, or 12 months on long-term survival, and explore differences between nivolumab+ipilimumab and nivolumab monotherapy, we analyzed pooled 5-year data of 935 responder and non-responder patients at various time points after treatment initiation in CheckMate 069, 066, and 067 studies.

Patients And Methods: Treatment-naive advanced melanoma patients received nivolumab+ipilimumab or nivolumab monotherapy. To decrease immortal time bias, 3-, 6-, or 12-month overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) landmark analyses were performed.

We report a case of a young girl of South Asian descent presented with faltering growth, hepatomegaly, hypertriglyceridaemia and raised transaminases. Subsequent ultrasound scans identified fatty infiltration in her liver, and a liver biopsy showed fibrosis and steatosis. The patient's serum triglycerides normalised without intervention by the age of 28 months.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the impact of treatment sequences in kidney cancer patients, focusing on sunitinib's role in overall survival benefits in the deferred surgery group.
  • In the deferred group, a significantly higher percentage (97.7%) received sunitinib compared to 80% in the immediate surgery group, with longer treatment duration observed in the deferred arm.
  • Results indicated that starting systemic therapy before surgery led to better disease control and may explain the improved overall survival seen in patients who underwent surgery after sunitinib treatment.

Background: Lung cancer survival rates in the UK are among the lowest in Europe, principally due to late-stage diagnosis. Alternative routes to earlier diagnosis of lung cancer are needed in socioeconomically deprived communities that are disproportionately affected by poor lung cancer outcomes. We assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a community-based pharmacy referral service to encourage earlier symptomatic referral for chest X-rays.

Background: STAMPEDE has previously reported that the use of upfront docetaxel improved overall survival (OS) for metastatic hormone naïve prostate cancer patients starting long-term androgen deprivation therapy. We report on long-term outcomes stratified by metastatic burden for M1 patients.

Methods: We randomly allocated patients in 2 : 1 ratio to standard-of-care (SOC; control group) or SOC + docetaxel.

Background: Results from large randomised controlled trials have shown that adding docetaxel to the standard of care (SOC) for men initiating hormone therapy for prostate cancer (PC) prolongs survival for those with metastatic disease and prolongs failure-free survival for those without. To date there has been no formal assessment of whether funding docetaxel in this setting represents an appropriate use of UK National Health Service (NHS) resources.

Objective: To assess whether administering docetaxel to men with PC starting long-term hormone therapy is cost-effective in a UK setting.

We investigated whether low melting point phase-change waxes could be incorporated into emergency drug transport bags to attenuate the known temperature extremes their contents can be exposed to. We exposed two custom-made hollow-walled drug containers placed within a pair of drug transport bags to three day/night cycles including periods of direct radiant sunlight. The wall cavities of one contained air, whereas those of the other contained a paraffin wax (melting point of 44-46 °C) with a high latent heat of fusion (until fully melted, its temperature does not increase further).

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) and ciprofloxacin (Cp) are important antimicrobials that pollute the environment in trace amounts. Although Cp has been recommended as prophylaxis for patients undergoing leech therapy to prevent infections by the leech gut symbiont , a puzzling rise in Cp-resistant (Cp) infections has been reported. We report on the effects of subtherapeutic FQ concentrations on bacteria in an environmental reservoir, the medicinal leech, and describe the presence of multiple antibiotic resistance mutations and a gain-of-function resistance gene.

Investigation of Two Prototypes of Novel Noncontact Technologies for Automated Real-Time Capture of Incremental Drug Administration Data From Syringes.

Anesth Analg

August 2017

From the *Morriston Hospital, Department of Anaesthetics, ABM University Health Board, Swansea, United Kingdom; †Welsh Centre for Burns, ABM University Health Board, Swansea, United Kingdom; and ‡Swansea University College of Medicine, Swansea, United Kingdom.

Background: An ideal electronic anesthesia recording system would be capable of not only recording physiological data but also injectable drug doses given, including those given incrementally from one syringe, without recourse to manual data entry. We compared 2 prototype devices which wirelessly recognized individual syringes and measured changes in their plunger positions via 2 different optical noncontact means, allowing calculation of incremental drug doses given.

Methods: Both devices incorporated a radio-frequency identification reader, which wirelessly read a unique code from a radio-frequency identification tag within syringe drug labels.
