To create a diagnostic tool before biopsy for patients with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels < 20 ng/ml to minimize prostate biopsy-related discomfort and risks. Data from 655 patients who underwent transperineal prostate biopsy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wannan Medical College from July 2021 to January 2023 were collected and analyzed. After applying the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling TEchnique class balancing on the training set, multiple machine learning models were constructed by using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) feature selection to identify the significant variables.

Lipid droplet formation induced by icaritin derivative IC2 promotes a combination strategy for cancer therapy.

Chin Med

December 2024

MOE Medical Basic Research Innovation Center for Gut Microbiota and Chronic Diseases, Wuxi School of Medicine, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, China.

Background: Lipid metabolism is crucial in cancer progression. Lipid droplets (LDs) generated in cancer cells can act as protective mechanisms through alleviating lipotoxicity under stress conditions. We previously developed IC2 from the Chinese medicine icaritin as an inhibitor of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1).

Rationale: Neuroprotective strategies based on reperfusion therapy hold substantial promise for acute ischaemic stroke (AIS). Preclinical research indicates that tocilizumab, an interleukin-6 receptor antagonist, can attenuate ischaemia-reperfusion damage by exerting anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects.

Aim: To determine tocilizumab's efficacy and safety when combined with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in patients with acute anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of circular RNA circTMCO3 in sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (S-AKI), finding that circTMCO3 expression is reduced in S-AKI models, which negatively impacts kidney health.* -
  • Introducing circTMCO3 into cell models enhances kidney cell survival and reduces injury by counteracting inflammation and oxidative stress, while its downregulation worsens these conditions.* -
  • The protective mechanism of circTMCO3 involves its interaction with miR-218-5p and ZEB2, suggesting that boosting circTMCO3 levels may provide a new therapeutic approach for treating S-AKI.*

Article Synopsis
  • Kidney diseases are a group of conditions that lead to gradual loss of kidney function, often requiring dialysis or transplantation as a last resort.
  • The review emphasizes the limitations of current treatments and the urgent need for new strategies, specifically focusing on extracellular vesicles (EVs) as both biomarkers and potential therapies for kidney issues.
  • It discusses the promise of urinary EVs for non-invasive assessment of kidney injury, and highlights mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs for their potential in tissue repair and therapeutic applications, along with the idea of engineering EVs for better targeting and effectiveness.

Background: Despite evidence linking fine particulate matter (PM) to cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), the impact of its components remains unclear. Socioeconomic status (SES) and regional disparities may confound their association. We aim to evaluate the associations between PM components and CMM and explore how socioeconomic status and regional disparities affect these relationships.

The purpose of this study was to explore the association between miR-210 and serum GGT, ALP and AST levels in patients with choledocholithiasis. The clinical data of 82 patients with biliary stones admitted to the hospital from May 2020 to May 2022 were collected and divided into observation group (n=40) and control group (n=42) according to whether asymptomatic combined. The relative expression level of miR-210 was measured by RT-PCR, serum GGT, ALP, and AST by rate method, and the correlation of miR-210 expression level with serum GGT, ALP, AST and the diagnostic value for choledochal stones was analyzed.

Microtia is a congenital auricle dysplasia with a high incidence and tissue engineering technology provides a promising strategy to reconstruct auricles. We previously described that the engineered cartilage constructed from microtia chondrocytes exhibited inferior levels of biochemical and biomechanical properties, which was proposed to be resulted of the decreased migration ability of microtia chondrocytes. In the current study, we found that Rho GTPase members were deficient in microtia chondrocytes.

Background: Current hypertension guidelines recommend combination of an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin-receptor blocker with a calcium-channel blocker or thiazide diuretic as initial antihypertensive therapy in patients with monotherapy uncontrolled hypertension. However, to what extent these two different combinations are comparable in blood pressure (BP)-lowering efficacy and safety remains under investigation, especially in the Chinese population. We investigated the BP-lowering efficacy and safety of the amlodipine/benazepril and benazepril/hydrochlorothiazide dual therapies in Chinese patients.

Many patients with Type B aortic dissection (TBAD) may not show noticeable symptoms until they become intervention and help prevent critically ill, which can result in fatal outcomes. Thus, it is crucial to screen people at high risk of TBAD and initiate the necessary preventive and therapeutic measures before irreversible harm occurs. By developing a prediction model for aortic arch morphology, it is possible to accurately identify those at high risk and take prompt action to prevent the adverse consequences of TBAD.
