The X-Press Pearl disaster has the unfortunate hallmarks of other global container ship disasters that are becoming increasingly common and will continue to cause future environmental damage. Port container throughput is ~830 million twenty-foot equivalents (TEUs), projected to grow for the next four decades at minimum, and industry experts predict that ship sizes will continue to grow to 50,000 TEU. Misdeclared content, poor packing, inadequate stowage/lashing, ship-board fires, climate-change-driven intensity of storms, and increasing ship size all ensure increasing environmental damage from container ship maritime disasters.

The initial emission rights allocation is the key measure to achieve the goal of total amount control and deepen the emission trading system. Although many studies have focused on the modeling of initial emission rights allocation, such as using game theory and multi-objective optimization methods, few studies have observed the hierarchical relationship of mutual interference and restriction between watershed management agency and local governments in each subarea during allocation. This relationship directly affects the rationality of the results of regional emission rights allocation.

As a critical way to realize the optimal allocation of water environment capacity resources in the basin, emission rights trading faces multiple uncertainties, making it extremely hard and challenging to formulate appropriate decisions and plans. Therefore, this study uses interval two-stage stochastic programming (ITSP) method to model the emission rights trading process with multiple uncertainties. It can promote the secondary optimal allocation of the emission rights between the demander and the supplier after the initial allocation.

Lithium (Li) extraction from brines is a major barrier to the sustainable development of batteries and alloys; however, current separation technology suffers from a trade-off between ion selectivity and permeability. Herein, a crown ether mechanically interlocked 3D porous organic framework (Crown-POF) was prepared as the porous filler of thin-film nanocomposite membranes. Crown-POF with penta-coordinated (four O atoms and one N atom) adsorption sites enables a special recognition for Li ion.

Inverted light-sheet microscopy (ILSM) is widely employed for fast large-volume imaging of biological tissue. However, the scattering especially in an uncleared sample, and the divergent propagation of the illumination beam lead to a trade-off between axial resolution and imaging depth. Herein, we propose naturally modulated ILSM (NM-ILSM) as a technique to improve axial resolution while simultaneously maintaining the wide field-of-view (FOV), and enhancing imaging contrast background suppression.

Water rights trading is an effective way to promote the redistribution of agricultural water saving within and among water-shortage regions. Reasonable transfer price can not only improve the income of farmers and irrigation areas, but also improve the efficiency of agricultural water use. However, the trading across industries or regions will diminish the ecosystem service value of arable land, and negatively impacts irrigation areas.

Dairy farm bedding can be produced by composting technology using dairy manure, which offers advantages in terms of cost, availability, and economic value. However, few information is available on the environmental sustainability and impacts for manure recycling systems based on different composting methods. The resource-environmental impact and eco-economic sustainability of two manure bedding regeneration systems: forced-ventilation static-stack aerobic fermentation (FVSSAF) system (Scenario A) and bedding recovery unit (BRU) system (Scenario B) were evaluated in this study.

Neurogenesis plays an important role in the prognosis of stroke patients and is known to be promoted by the activation of the Notch1 signaling pathway. Studies on the airway epithelium have shown that miR-449b represses the Notch pathway. The study aimed to investigate whether limb remote ischemic conditioning (LRIC) was able to promote neurogenesis in cerebral ischemic mice, and to investigate the role of the miR-449b/Notch1 pathway in LRIC-induced neuroprotection.

Trade-off between permeability and nanometer-level selectivity is an inherent shortcoming of membrane-based separation of molecules, while most highly porous materials with high adsorption capacity lack solution processability and stability for achieving adsorption-based molecule separation. We hereby report a hydrophilic amidoxime modified polymer of intrinsic microporosity (AOPIM-1) as a membrane adsorption material to selectively adsorb and separate small organic molecules from water with ultrahigh processing capacity. The membrane adsorption capacity for Rhodamine B reaches 26.

Urban agglomeration will be the main mode of future urbanization in China, greatly influencing social and economic development and ecosystem protection at the whole city cluster scale. It is important to analyze the impacts of large-scale, scattered land use and cover change (LUCC) consisting of one-pole-multi-point urbanization in city clusters on regional ecosystem services (ESs), so as to increase ecological security and maintain ES levels. Using the urban-rural gradient analysis method (UGAM), this study examined driver-response mechanisms of large-scale, scattered agglomeration urbanization on ESs along an urban-rural gradient and at a regional scale.

With carbon fiber, it is difficult to load semiconductor photocatalysts and easy to shed off thanks to its smooth surface and few active groups, which has always been a problem in the synthesis of photocatalysts. In the study, SrTiO nanoparticles were loaded onto the Tencel fibers using the solvothermal method, and then the Tencel fibers were carbonized at a high temperature under the condition of inert gas to form carbon fibers, thus SrTiO@CF photocatalytic composite materials with solid core shell structure were prepared. Meanwhile, Mn ions were added into the SrTiO precursor reagent in the solvothermal experiment to prepare Mn-doped Mn-SrTiO@CF photocatalytic composite material.

Indoor photovoltaics have attracted increasing attention, since they can provide sustainable energy through the recycling of photon energy from household dim lighting. However, solar cells exhibiting high performance under sunlight may not perform well under indoor light conditions, mainly due to the mismatch of the irradiance spectrum. In particular, most of the indoor light sources emit visible photons with negligible near-infrared irradiance.

Organic farming supports higher biodiversity than conventional farming, but at the cost of lower yields. We conducted a meta-analysis quantifying the trade-off between biodiversity and yield, comparing conventional and organic farming. We developed a compatibility index to assess whether biodiversity gains from organic farming exceed yield losses, and a substitution index to assess whether organic farming would increase biodiversity in an area if maintaining total production under organic farming would require cultivating more land at the expense of nature.

The relationships that control seed production in trees are fundamental to understanding the evolution of forest species and their capacity to recover from increasing losses to drought, fire, and harvest. A synthesis of fecundity data from 714 species worldwide allowed us to examine hypotheses that are central to quantifying reproduction, a foundation for assessing fitness in forest trees. Four major findings emerged.

Artificial intelligence provides a promising solution for streamlining COVID-19 diagnoses; however, concerns surrounding security and trustworthiness impede the collection of large-scale representative medical data, posing a considerable challenge for training a well-generalized model in clinical practices. To address this, we launch the Unified CT-COVID AI Diagnostic Initiative (UCADI), where the artificial intelligence (AI) model can be distributedly trained and independently executed at each host institution under a federated learning framework without data sharing. Here we show that our federated learning framework model considerably outperformed all of the local models (with a test sensitivity/specificity of 0.
