Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how the surface charge of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) relates to LDL cholesterol levels and atherosclerosis in a Japanese community.
  • It involved 409 residents aged 35-79 and measured the electric charges of LDL using advanced technology, examining correlations with various health indicators.
  • Results showed that a more negative surface charge of LDL was linked to lower serum LDL-cholesterol levels, although no significant connections were found with atherosclerosis measures like the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) or C-reactive protein levels.

Sleep is essential for our health. Short sleep is known to increase disease risks via imbalance of intestinal microbiota, dysbiosis. However, mechanisms by which short sleep induces dysbiosis remain unknown.

Background: Sedentary behavior and decreased physical activity are associated with reduced kidney function, yet most evidence is based on self-reported physical activity. This study investigated the association between accelerometer-based physical activity level and kidney function in a general Japanese population.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 440 community-dwelling Japanese participants, aged 35-79 years.

Background: Both decreased insulin sensitivity and impaired insulin secretion are common in Asian populations with diabetes, in contrast to Western populations. There is limited evidence regarding the association between insulin response in diabetes in Asian populations and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) insufficiency.

Methods: The present cross-sectional study compared the prevalence of diabetes, defined as a fasting plasma glucose level ≥126 mg/dL and/or a HbA1c level ≥6.

Lower human defensin 5 in elderly people compared to middle-aged is associated with differences in the intestinal microbiota composition: the DOSANCO Health Study.

Geroscience

April 2022

Department of Cell Biological Science, Faculty of Advanced Life Science, Hokkaido University, North 21, West 11, Kita-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, 001-0021, Japan.

Recently, aging is considered a risk factor for various diseases. Although changes in the intestinal microbiota along with aging are thought to associate with the increased disease risk, mechanisms that cause age-related transition of the intestinal microbiota remain unknown. This study aims to clarify relationships between the amount of human defensin 5 (HD5), a Paneth cell α-defensin, which is known to regulate the intestinal microbiota, and age-related differences of the intestinal microbiota composition.

The number of Japanese radiologic technologists will be increased in 40 years.

Radiol Phys Technol

July 2013

Department of Radiological Technology, Suttu Municipal Clinic, 72-2 Oshimacho, Suttu-Cho, Hokkaido 048-0406, Japan.

It is essential to predict the long-term supply and demand for the number of radiologic technologists as medical resources. However, it is difficult to predict the number of Japanese radiologic technologists due to complex and intertwining factors. Our purpose in this study was to predict the future number of radiologic technologists using the concept of system dynamics (SD), and to clarify the effects of relevant factors.
