Tetrafluoroborate anion (BF) is found in the streams of flue-gas desulfurization and borosilicate glasses etching which deteriorates water quality through slow hydrolysis into boric acid and fluoride. Decomposition and electrocoagulation (EC) of BF were studied using metallic aluminum as the sacrificial electrode. The dissolved Al(III) from the anode could efficiently decompose BF in forms of fluoroaluminate complexes, and the derived boric acid and fluoride ion were removed by sweep flocculation.

Chemical oxo-precipitation (COP) has become a promising method for treating boron wastewater at room temperature; it uses hydrogen peroxide to convert boric acid to perborate species, which are precipitated using alkaline earth metals. In this work, solubility models of barium perborates were established to predict residual boron levels from COP. The solubility product constants (pK) of two major barium perborates - amorphous Ba(B(OH)OOH) (A-BaPB) and crystalline BaB(OH)(OO)B(OH) (C-BaPB) - were experimentally estimated (8.

In view of the current lack of reliable partition coefficients for organic compounds with carbohydrates (K(ch)), carefully measured values with cellulose and starch, the two major forms of carbohydrates, are provided for a wide range of compounds: short-chain chlorinated hydrocarbons, halogenated benzenes, alkyl benzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls, and organochlorine pesticides. To ensure the accuracy of the K(ch) data, solute concentrations in both water and carbohydrate phases are measured by direct solvent extraction of the samples. For a given compound, the observed partition coefficient with cellulose (K(cl)) is virtually the same as that with starch (K(st)).
