Interdisciplinary perspectives on computed tomography in sepsis: survey among medical doctors at a large university medical center.

Objectives: This study aims to describe physicians' perspectives on the use of computed tomography (CT) in patients with sepsis.

Methods: In January 2022, physicians of a large European university medical center were surveyed using a web-based questionnaire asking about their views on the role of CT in sepsis. A total of 371 questionnaires met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using work experience, workplace, and medical specialty of physicians as variables.

Hands-free continuous carotid Doppler ultrasound for detection of the pulse during cardiac arrest in a porcine model.

Background/purpose: Pulse palpation is an unreliable method for diagnosing cardiac arrest. To address this limitation, continuous hemodynamic monitoring may be a viable solution. Therefore, we developed a novel, hands-free Doppler system, RescueDoppler, to detect the pulse continuously in the carotid artery.

Creating an Innovative Artificial Intelligence-Based Technology (TCRact) for Designing and Optimizing T Cell Receptors for Use in Cancer Immunotherapies: Protocol for an Observational Trial.

Background: Cancer continues to be the leading cause of mortality in high-income countries, necessitating the development of more precise and effective treatment modalities. Immunotherapy, specifically adoptive cell transfer of T cell receptor (TCR)-engineered T cells (TCR-T therapy), has shown promise in engaging the immune system for cancer treatment. One of the biggest challenges in the development of TCR-T therapies is the proper prediction of the pairing between TCRs and peptide-human leukocyte antigen (pHLAs).

Applications of endoscopic vacuum therapy in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Endoscopic vacuum therapy (EVT) is an increasingly popular treatment option for wall defects in the upper gastrointestinal tract. After its initial description for the treatment of anastomotic leaks after esophageal and gastric surgery, it was also implemented for a wide range of defects, including acute perforations, duodenal lesions, and postbariatric complications. Apart from the initially proposed handmade sponge inserted using the "piggyback" technique, further devices were used, such as the commercially available EsoSponge and VAC-Stent as well as open-pore film drainage.

Analysis of Inflammation-Related Genes in Patients with Stanford Type A Aortic Dissection.

Aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening cardiovascular disease. Pathophysiologically, it has been shown that aortic wall inflammation promotes the occurrence and development of aortic dissection. Thus, the aim of the current research was to determine the inflammation-related biomarkers in AD.

Clinical investigation of botulinum toxin (prabotulinumtoxin A) for bruxism related to masseter muscle hypertrophy: A prospective study.

This study aims to confirm the effectiveness and safety of a prabotulinumtoxin type A (praBTX-A) injection in patients with bruxism and masseter hypertrophy. The study included patients who ground or clenched their teeth while sleeping and had computed tomography (CT) scans that showed a maximum thickness of the masseter muscle of 15 mm or more. The praBTX-A was administered bilaterally into the masseter muscles; 15 U/side for group 1, 25 U/side for group 2, and 35 U/side for group 3.

A Novel Method Using the Petal Pattern for Contouring a Domed Nipple in Tuberous Breasts.

The main cause of domed nipples is increased pressure, which causes the breast tissue to herniate toward the nipple-areola complex. It appears as a characteristic of a tuberous breast rather than occurring alone, and the boundary between the nipple and areolar region is unclear. The authors present a method using petal patterns for single-stage aesthetic correction of domed nipples.

Anatomic Variations of the Lateral Branch of the Supraorbital Nerve Observed in Endoscopic Forehead Surgery.

Surgeons dissect carefully in the medial third of the supraorbital rim to preserve the supraorbital nerve (SON) during surgical forehead rejuvenation. However, the anatomic variations of SON exit from the frontal bone have been researched in cadaver or imaging studies. In this study, we report a variation in the lateral branch of SON observed in an endoscopic view during forehead lifts.

Female Gonadal Venous Insufficiency in a Clinical Presentation Which Suggested an Acute Abdomen-A Case Report and Literature Review.

Pelvic venous insufficiency (PVI) is frequently associated with symptoms of abdominal pain or discomfort that is overlooked or under-diagnosed in women. Despite the fact that pelvic venous insufficiency in men is very well documented, its occurrence in women needs to be further studied. Patients with pelvic varicose veins undergo a long and inconclusive diagnostic work-up before the exact cause of the symptoms is identified.

Trends and Prevalence of Hospital Admissions Related to Deliberate Self-Poisoning and Used Substances in Romanian Adolescents between 2016 and 2022.

Rates of self-poisoning are increasing substantially all around the world, with self-poisoning being the most common form of self-harm leading to hospitalization in children and adolescents. This study aims to investigate the trends in the number of deliberate self-poisoning admissions in Romanian adolescents during the period of 2016-2022, as well as the most frequently used substances and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospital admissions due to self-poisoning and substance use in relation to these episodes. The sample included 178 patients admitted to the Clinic of Pediatric Psychiatry in Cluj-Napoca from 2016 to 2022 due to an episode of self-poisoning.

Adverse Drug Reactions Relevant to Drug Resistance and Ineffectiveness Associated with Meropenem, Linezolid, and Colistin: An Analysis Based on Spontaneous Reports from the European Pharmacovigilance Database.

Antimicrobial resistance is considered one of the major threats to public health and is an important factor that influences the patient's outcome in the intensive care unit. Pharmacovigilance can help raise awareness of potential drug resistance (DR) or ineffectiveness (DI) through adverse drug reaction reports that are submitted to different spontaneous reporting systems. Based on spontaneous Individual Case Safety Reports from EudraVigilance, we conducted a descriptive analysis of adverse drug reactions associated with meropenem, colistin, and linezolid, with a focus on DR and DI.

Surgical and endovascular treatment of pelvic venous disorder: Results of a multicentre retrospective cohort study.

Objective: In the present study, we investigated the clinical outcomes after gonadal vein resection (GVR) and gonadal vein embolization (GVE) with coils in patients with pelvic venous disorder (PeVD). We also assessed the rates of procedural complications and disease recurrence.

Methods: Our multicenter retrospective cohort study included 361 female patients with PeVD-related chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and gonadal vein reflux who underwent GVR (n = 184) or GVE with coils (n = 177) from 1999 to 2020.

Laparoscopic Hartmann Procedure-A Surgery That Still Saves Lives.

Background: A Hartmann operation, which is the intervention by which the lower part of the sigmoid and the upper part of the rectum are resected with the closing of the rectal stump and end colostomy, has as its indications: advanced or complicated rectosigmoid neoplasm, moderate biological condition of the patient, peritoneal sepsis, intestinal occlusion and fragile colonic wall, especially in the context of inflammatory changes. The Hartmann procedure can save lives even at the cost of a stoma reversal failure.

Methods: The cases operated with the Hartmann procedure by an open approach or laparoscopic approach in our clinic, between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020, were admitted in this study and their medical records were reviewed, also making a comparison between the two types of approach.

Public effect of the 2022 Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign delivered through a metaverse platform.

Purpose: The Korean Society of Coloproctology has been conducting Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign, also known as the Gold Ribbon Campaign, every September since 2007. The 2022 campaign was held through a metaverse platform targeting the younger age group under the slogan of raising awareness of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to analyze the impact of the 2022 campaign on a metaverse platform.

Positional advantages of supine MRI for diagnosis prior to breast‑conserving surgery.

The present study aimed to evaluate the rate of positive surgical margins for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed in the supine position prior to breast-conserving surgery (BCS). The rate of positive surgical margins and the clinicopathological factors were examined in consecutive patients with BCS who underwent preoperative MRI performed in the supine position at Sapporo Medical University Hospital (Sapporo, Japan) and related hospitals and clinics between January 2012 and December 2013. Of 1,175 eligible patients, 1,150 were included after excluding 25 patients with either bilateral breast cancer or stage IV disease.

Adverse Outcome of Two-Staged Breast Reconstruction: More Than One Culprit.

Background: Two-stage prosthetic breast reconstruction with initial insertion of a tissue expander followed by change-over to an implant after a period of inflation has become a well-established option in breast reconstruction. Our aim was to analyze the feasibility of two-stage breast reconstruction in our center by following the surgical technique, number of complications and associated risk factors.

Patients And Methods: We studied 91 patients who underwent skin sparring mastectomy and tissue expander placement in our surgical unit, between January 2017 and December 2021.

Mandible Angle Resection with the Retroauricular Approach.

Square-shaped and large moon-shaped faces are commonly observed in Asians, and the contour of the mandible is associated with the shape of the lower part of the face. Mandible contouring surgery is performed to create a softer impression for East Asians. Currently, most surgeries are performed using an intraoral approach.

Preclinical Evidence of Progesterone as a New Pharmacological Strategy in Human Adrenocortical Carcinoma Cell Lines.

Background: Adrenocortical cancer (ACC) is a rare malignancy with a dismal prognosis. The treatment includes mitotane and EDP chemotherapy (etoposide, doxorubicin, and cisplatin). However, new therapeutic approaches for advanced ACC are needed, particularly targeting the metastatic process.

Rethinking protocolized completion angiography following extremity vascular trauma: A prospective observational multicenter trial.

Background: Completion angiography (CA) is commonly used following repair of extremity vascular injury and is recommended by the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma practice management guidelines for extremity trauma. However, it remains unclear which patients benefit from CA because only level 3 evidence exists.

Methods: This prospective observational multicenter (18LI, 2LII) analysis included patients 15 years or older with extremity vascular injuries requiring operative management.
