Background: Recent studies suggest that among cognitively unimpaired older adults, there are individuals who might present with subtle cognitive impairments suggesting the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD; Bos et al., 2018). The Visual Short-Term Memory Binding Test (VSTMBT) identifies older adults who are accumulating AD pathology even though they are otherwise cognitively unimpaired (Parra et al.

Background: Traditional neuropsychological assessments have proved insensitive to identify the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Such a barrier has proved more challenging when assessing individuals from underrepresented populations (Parra et al., 2018; 2020; 2022).

In Latin America, the Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic of 2015-2016 resulted in children being born with a spectrum of neurological disorders called Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS). Women are the primary caregivers of those children. The objective of the study was to identify the perceived needs of women to care for their children with CZS in Southern Colombia.

Objective: To test whether differences in serum concentrations of adiposity-related low-grade inflammatory mediators could help to differentiate patients with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), classic adult-onset type 1 diabetes, and type 2 diabetes.

Research Design And Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 75 patients with LADA, 67 with classic adult-onset type 1 diabetes, and 390 with type 2 diabetes. Serum concentrations of adiponectin, soluble tumor necrosis factor-α receptor 2 (sTNFRII), interleukin-6, hs-CRP, and total leukocyte number were measured.

Introduction: Differences in the prevalence of dementia among populations and in the effect of apolipoprotein E (APOE) on the emergence of Alzheimer disease (AD), which is the main type of dementia, have been reported.

Methods: This study estimated the ancestry of a group of individuals with late-onset Alzheimer disease (LOAD) (N=280) and established whether there were any differences when compared with a control group (N=357) in a sample of the Colombian population.

Results: When the analyses were adjusted for known risk factors such as age, sex, presence of APOE[Latin Small Letter Open E]4, socioeconomic status, educational attainment, and place of birth, African ancestry was associated with an increased LOAD risk (odds ratio: 1.

Attention is biased towards threat-related stimuli. In three experiments, we investigated the mechanisms, processes, and time course of this processing bias. An emotional flanker task simultaneously presented affective or neutral pictures from the international affective picture system database either as central response-relevant stimuli or surrounding response-uninformative flankers.

Background: Research has begun to document the bivariate connections between pain in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and various aspects of health related quality of life (HRQOL), such as fatigue, social functioning, mental health, and physical functioning.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to construct and test a theoretical path model illuminating the stage-wise and sequential (cascading) HRQOL pathways through which pain increases physical disability in individuals with SCI in a sample from Colombia, South America. It was hypothesized that increased pain would lead to decreased energy, which would lead to decreased mental health and social functioning, which both would lead to emotional role limitations, which finally would lead to physical role limitations.

Objective: Historically, the neuropsychological test traditions of the four Nordic countries have spanned from the flexible and qualitative tradition of Luria-Christensen to the quantitative large battery approach of Halstead and Kløve-Matthews. This study reports current test use and discusses whether these traditions still influence attitudes toward test use and choice of tests.

Method: The study is based on survey data from 702 Nordic neuropsychologists.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and mental health in spinal cord injury (SCI) mostly comes from developed regions, highlighting a gap in studies from Latin America, particularly Colombia.
  • The study aimed to explore the correlation between HRQOL and mental health among 40 individuals with SCI in Neiva, Colombia, using self-report questionnaires administered by caregivers.
  • Results indicated a significant relationship where lower HRQOL was linked to poorer mental health, with factors like anxiety and fatigue being particularly impactful, emphasizing the need for improved mental health interventions in SCI rehabilitation services in Latin America.

The European and African contribution to the pre-existing Native American background has influenced the complex genetic pool of Colombia. Because colonisation was not homogeneous in this country, current populations are, therefore, expected to have different proportions of Native American, European and African ancestral contributions. The aim of this work was to examine 11 urban admixed populations and a Native American group, called Pastos, for 32 X chromosome indel markers to expand the current knowledge concerning the genetic background of Colombia.

Although considerable research has been carried out on family caregivers of individuals with various types of disabilities, spinal cord injury (SCI) caregivers have received considerably less attention in terms of research, especially in regions such as Latin America. This study examined the relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in individuals with SCI and their family caregiver's mental health in Neiva, Colombia. Thirty-four individuals with SCI and their primary caregivers (34 dyads; n=68) from the Foundation for the Integral Development of People with Disabilities in Neiva, Colombia, were included in this study.

Scottish Dementia Clinical Research Network Perth, Scotland, UK ; Human Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychology Department, University of Edinburgh Edinburgh, UK ; Neuropsy and Biomedical Unit, Health Faculty, Surcolombiana University Neiva, Colombia.

Only a small proportion of individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) will convert to dementia. Methods currently available to identify risk for conversion do not combine enough sensitivity and specificity, which is even more problematic in low-educated populations. Current guidelines suggest the use of combined markers for dementia to enhance the prediction accuracy of assessment methods.
