Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are the most common tumor of the skull base with available treatment options that carry a risk of iatrogenic injury to the facial nerve, which can significantly impact patients' quality of life. As facial nerve outcomes remain challenging to prognosticate, we endeavored to utilize machine learning to decipher predictive factors relevant to facial nerve outcomes following microsurgical resection of VS. A database of patient-, tumor- and surgery-specific features was constructed via retrospective chart review of 242 consecutive patients who underwent microsurgical resection of VS over a 7-year study period.

Colonoscopy remains the primary method for preventing colorectal cancer. Traditionally, hot snare polypectomy (HSP) was the method of choice for removing polyps larger than 5 mm. Yet, for polyps smaller than 10 mm, cold snare polypectomy (CSP) has become the favored approach.

Unsuccessful Recanalization versus Medical Management of Patients with Large Ischemic Core : Analysis of the ANGEL-ASPECT Randomized Trial.

Clin Neuroradiol

June 2024

Interventional Neuroradiology, Department of Neurology, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, No.119, South 4th Ring West Road, Fengtai District, 100070, Beijing, China.

Purpose: The outcomes of patients with large ischemic core who fail to recanalize with endovascular therapy (EVT) compared to medical management (MM) are uncertain. The objective was to evaluate the clinical and safety outcomes of patients who underwent EVT in patients with large ischemic core and unsuccessful recanalization.

Methods: This was a post hoc analysis of the ANGEL-ASPECT randomized trial.

Background: Plaque incision/excision and grafting are surgical techniques used to treat patients with Peyronie's disease who are refractory to less invasive interventions, have severe penile curvature, or have an hourglass deformity. However, the procedure carries the risk of penile sensory loss because of the need for dissection of the neurovascular bundle (NVB). The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of a novel technique for unilateral NVB dissection and its ability to preserve penile sensitivity while maintaining adequate correction of the penile curvature.

Secukinumab is monoclonal antibody that targets interleukin 17 (IL-17) for treatment of psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, and ankylosing spondylitis. We herein present a psoriatic arthritis patient who developed leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) following treatment with secukinumab. Genetic studies identified amino acid changes in two different IL-17 receptors, IL-17RA and IL-17-RC, and interacting DOCK8, Rab27A, and STX1 proteins.

Background: Invasive fungal infections have presented a challenge in treatment. In the past, it was known that the frontrunner in such infections is s with little emphasis placed on non-albicans species (NAC). Studies worldwide have shown a rise in fungal infections attributed to non-albicans species.

Recent Advances in the Treatment and Supportive Care of POEMS Syndrome.

J Clin Med

November 2022

Department of Hematology-Oncology, Myeloma and Amyloidosis Program, Maroone Cancer Center, Cleveland Clinic Florida 2950, Weston, FL 33331, USA.

POEMS is a rare clonal plasma cell disorder characterized by multi-systemic features that include demyelinating peripheral neuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, presence of monoclonal proteins (M-protein), and skin changes. Even though the pathophysiology is poorly understood, recent studies suggest that both clonal and polyclonal plasmacytosis leading to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and angiogenic mediators play the central role. These mediators including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) are the driving forces of the syndrome.

Introduction: The skeletal survey (SS) is used to evaluate and diagnose bone abnormalities, including fractures caused by child abuse. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends initial SS for all children younger than 24 months old who are suspected victims of abuse and a follow-up skeletal survey (FUSS) 2 weeks later. The latter can further characterize abnormal or equivocal findings, detect ongoing trauma, or fractures too acute for visualization upon initial assessment.

Background: Aging may affect ascending colon (AC) differently from descending colon (DC) and increase the risk of fecal loading (FL) in AC.

Methods: Patients aged ≥65 years admitted to a community hospital were analyzed by abdominal x-ray for fecal loads and stool retention patterns. FL was scored between 0 and 5 (severe) on each segment of colon with a possible total score 20.

Background And Objectives: There are scant data available in the published literature providing chest computed tomography (CT) findings on pulmonary interstitial emphysema (PIE), complications and associated parenchymal abnormalities. We report the incidence of PIE and complications by chest CT in patients with COVID-19.

Methods: We retrospective analyzed 897 chest CT scans performed with 64-slice CT scanners during the COVID-19 pandemic period from March 2020 to September 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • T cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) is a rare and aggressive cancer with limited treatment options and poor survival rates, prompting this study to evaluate allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (alloHCT) outcomes in affected patients.* -
  • The analysis utilized data from 266 T-PLL patients who underwent alloHCT from 2008 to 2018, revealing a 4-year overall survival rate of 30% and highlighting significant factors affecting survival, including the conditioning regimen and patient age.* -
  • Findings indicated that myeloablative conditioning and poor performance status lead to worse survival and increased treatment-related mortality, while stable disease or progression correlated with a higher relapse risk, suggesting

Unlabelled: Young Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) continue to face disproportionate HIV risk. Despite its well accepted role in HIV prevention, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake remains below desired goals. Systemic barriers to PrEP access, including insurance complexity, cost, and wait times to start PrEP may contribute to low PrEP engagement.

Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a cardiovascular emergency that requires emergent surgical, endovascular, or medical intervention depending on the portion of the aorta implicated, as dictated by the Stanford classification, and the extent of aortic involvement. Acute chest pain radiating to the back is typically seen in AAD and may be associated with radial pulse deficits. A high index of suspicion is required to diagnose and initiate management of this emergency as early as possible.
