Background: Spatial-temporal control of mRNA translation in dendrites is important for synaptic plasticity. In response to pre-synaptic stimuli, local mRNA translation can be rapidly triggered near stimulated synapses to supply the necessary proteins for synapse maturation or elimination, and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) are responsible for proper localization of mRNAs in dendrites. Although is a robust technique for analyzing RNA localization in fixed neurons, live-cell imaging of RNA dynamics remains challenging.

In 1979, I joined Jim Ranck's group in Brooklyn and began recording hippocampal neurons. The first project was to record single neurons across three behaviors in different chambers: pellet retrieval on a radial-arm maze, bar-pressing for food reward in an operant chamber, and maternal pup-retrieval in a large home box. We found spatial firing in all three chambers, with a single-neuron's firing pattern unpredictable from one chamber to the next.

Purpose: To study the effects of anti-VEGF injections on the prevalence of ocular hypertension (OHT), sustained elevated intraocular pressure (SE-IOP), and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with age-matched controls.
Methods: A retrospective case-control study was performed with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic macular edema (DME) against a control group involving atrophic AMD or diabetic retinopathy (DR) without DME. Bevacizumab, ranibizumab, or a combination of both were used in the treatment group.

We sought to conduct a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis of post-operative outcomes following TKA with an all-polyethylene tibial (APT) or a metal-backed tibial component (MBT). A systematic review of the literature was conducted to identify all studies comparing APT and MBT for TKA based upon rates of complications, revisions, reoperation, and patient-reported outcomes. Data was pooled and relative risk of each outcome measure at short (< 5 year), mid (5-10 year), and long (> 10 year) follow-up was calculated.

Scholarly activity is a key component of most residency programmes. To establish fundamental research skills and fill gaps within training curricula, we developed an online, asynchronous set of modules called to introduce trainees to various topics that are germane to the conduct of research and evaluated its effectiveness in resident research education. was utilised by residents at One Brooklyn Health in Brooklyn, NY.

Access to over-the-counter (OTC) skincare products is critical for managing a wide range of dermatologic conditions, yet recent trends in urban retail stores may jeopardize this accessibility and exacerbate healthcare disparities. However, the emerging trend of securing skincare products behind security glass in urban retail environments poses significant risks to healthcare equity and accessibility. Herein, we aim to quantify the prevalence of skincare products behind security glass in pharmacies within a 25-mile radius of Times Square, New York City.

Most physicians appreciate that practicing medicine is a commitment to continuous learning. However, "learning" can be mistakenly understood as simply the acquisition of facts and new knowledge. But learning also necessitates the constant re-examination and challenging of one's existing body of knowledge, as misinformation persists when one's beliefs are not challenged or questioned in the light of new information.

Background: Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) has been used for over 50 years to treat chronic pain by delivering electrical pulses through small electrodes placed near targeted peripheral nerves those outside the brain and spinal cord. Early PNS systems often required invasive neurosurgical procedures. However, since 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved percutaneously implanted PNS leads and neurostimulators offering a much less invasive, non-opioid option for managing recalcitrant chronic pain.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has revolutionized heart failure (HF) management, offering benefits in morbidity, mortality, and symptom alleviation. However, optimal response rates are not universally achieved, necessitating enhanced patient-selection strategies. Myocardial scar patterns, quantified by delayed-enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance (DE-CMR), have been implicated in CRT outcomes.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) are an important threat to the health of solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr); data comparing outcomes of SOTr with CRE to non-SOTr with CRE are lacking. A matched cohort study was performed within 2 prospective, multicenter, cohort studies (Consortium on Resistance Against Carbapenems in Klebsiella and other Enterobacterales and Consortium on Resistance Against Carbapenems in Klebsiella and other Enterobacterales 2). The epidemiology, desirability of outcome rankings outcomes, and mortality of SOTr and non-SOTr hospitalized in the United States (December 2011-August 2017) with clinical isolates with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-defined CRE were compared.

For example, in the Women's Interagency HIV Study, it is of interest to understand the effects of incarceration on the number of sexual partners and the number of cigarettes smoked after incarceration. In settings like this where the outcome is a count, the estimand is often the causal mean ratio, i.

Liver fibrosis is the pathological deposition of extracellular matrix rich in fibrillar collagen within the hepatocytes in response to chronic liver injury due to various causes. As the condition advances, it can progress to cirrhosis, the late stages of which are irreversible. Multiple pathophysiological mechanisms and cell types are responsible for the progression of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.

Optimal treatment of locally advanced cancer of the larynx is controversial. In this study, we aim to compare outcomes in patients with T3-4N0-1 cancer of the larynx who underwent surgery alone versus surgery followed by radiation therapy (RT). A total of 1820 patients with advanced laryngeal cancer were identified from the national Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database and stratified based on postoperative RT status, and clinical outcomes were compared between these 2 groups.
