This pilot study was undertaken to increase our understanding of the information needs of adolescents when a mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. In-depth interviews with 13 adolescents provided insight into the types of questions they had at the time of their mother's diagnosis and how satisfied they were with the access they had to information. These adolescents had many questions about cancer and its treatment, specific questions about their mother's disease and survival, and concerns about their own risk.

The majority of women, when diagnosed with breast cancer, turn to their partners for support. However, the diagnosis and treatment of this disease will have an impact on the partner as well and could influence his ability to be supportive. This study was undertaken to explore the perceived informational needs of male partners of women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Women under 35 or 40 with primary breast cancer have a poor prognosis independent of other factors [Albain K, Allred C, Clark G. Breast cancer outcome and predictors of outcome: are there age differentials? J Natl Cancer Inst Monogr 1994;35-42]. In some recent studies, however, age is not independent in multivariate analyses, which include gene signatures [Van De Vijver M, He YD, Van'T Veer L, et al.

Cone-beam digital tomosynthesis (CBDT) is a new approach that was recently proposed for rapid tomographic imaging of soft-tissue targets in the radiotherapy treatment room. One of the potential problems in implementing CBDT using, for example, megavoltage (MV) X rays is the possibility of artifacts caused by image lag and ghosting of the X-ray detector used. In the present work, we developed a model to correct for image lag with indirect-conversion flat-panel imagers (FPIs) used for MV-CBDT.

Questions: What is the role of single-agent interleukin-2 (il-2) in the treatment of adults with metastatic melanoma? If there is a role for single-agent il-2, what patient population can appropriately be considered for treatment? If there is a role for single-agent il-2, what dose and schedule are appropriate? What are the toxicities associated with il-2?
Perspectives: Many agents have been investigated for antitumour activity in melanoma, but few have shown promising response rates. Early detection, appropriate surgery, and adjuvant therapy have all improved outcomes, but approximately one third of patients with early-stage disease will nevertheless develop metastases. Single-agent il-2 has attracted much attention over the past several years.

Minimally invasive procedures such as percutaneous cementoplasty can provide immediate pain relief and can restore mechanical stability for patients with bone metastases who are not candidates for surgery or who show resistance to radiotherapy or analgesic treatment. Here, we examine a case of percutaneous cementoplasty to treat a lytic lesion of the acetabulum from breast cancer. Good filling was observed, and no complications occurred.

Rapid Response Radiotherapy Program and Bone Metastases Clinic, Toronto-Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario.
Patients with symptomatic metastases referred for outpatient palliative radiotherapy for symptom control at the Rapid Response Radiotherapy Program (RRRP) and the Bone Metastases Clinic (BMC) at the Toronto-Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre have a limited life expectancy. Relevant medical information is missing from the files of many referred patients when they arrive at the clinics, potentially causing delayed treatment and ambiguity in the best management of their needs in situations of worsening condition. Clear documentation of the do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is imperative to avoid panic and the taking of unnecessarily aggressive measures in situations in which cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has no benefit or is not desired.

Background: Cervical screening is an effective prevention measure. It is unclear whether cervical cancer results from non-participation in screening or from failures in detection by screening. Analysis of the screening history of patients with cervix cancer may contribute to understanding failures in prevention.

Purpose: The objective is to update previous meta-analyses with a systematic review of randomized palliative radiotherapy (RT) trials comparing single fractions (SFs) versus multiple fractions (MFs).
Methods: The analysis includes all published reports from randomized trials comparing SF or MF schedules for the treatment of painful bone metastases with localized RT. A systematic review was performed using the random-effects model with Review Manager version 4.
Purpose: This clinical practice guideline, based on a systematic review, evaluates chemotherapy options for patients with relapsed small cell lung cancer (SCLC).
Methods: Relevant randomized trials and meta-analyses were identified through a systematic search of the literature. External feedback was obtained from practitioners in Ontario, and the guideline was approved by the provincial lung cancer disease site group.

While cladribine is a highly effective therapy for patients with symptomatic hairy cell leukemia (HCL), up to 37% of patients ultimately relapse and incompletely responding patients relapse more frequently. Rituximab is a monoclonal antibody against CD20 that has been shown to be effective in patients with relapsed HCL. We present an unusual case of successful multiple re-treatments with rituximab in a patient with heavily pre-treated HCL and briefly review the relevant literature.

Most electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) developed so far use a Cu plate/phosphor screen to absorb x rays and convert their energies into light, and the light image is then read out. The main problem with this approach is that the Cu plate/phosphor screen must be thin (approximately 2 mm thick) in order to obtain a high spatial resolution, resulting in a low x-ray absorption or low quantum efficiency for megavoltage x rays (typically 2-4%). In addition, the phosphor screen contains high atomic number (high-Z) materials, resulting in an over-response of the detector to low-energy x rays in dosimetric verification.
