Objectives: In patients with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), the immune system often fails to eradicate maternal cells that enter the foetus via the placenta, resulting in transplacental maternal engraftment (TME) syndrome. However, the clinical significance of TME has not been comprehensively elucidated.

Methods: Here, we describe a patient with SCID with a novel frameshift mutation associated with maternal engrafted CD8 T cells that had been expanded by viral infection.

Growing efforts have been made to pool coronavirus data and control measures from countries and regions to compare the effectiveness of government policies. We examine whether these strategies can explain East Asia's effective control of the COVID-19 pandemic based on time-series data with cross-correlations between the Stringency Index and number of confirmed cases during the early period of outbreaks. We suggest that multidisciplinary empirical research in healthcare and social sciences, personality, and social psychology is needed for a clear understanding of how cultural values, social norms, and individual predispositions interact with policy to affect life-saving behavioural changes in different societies.

This paper describes a new simple DNA detection method based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology using a silver nanowire stacked-glass fiber filter substrate. In this system, DNA-intercalating dye (EVAGreen) and reference dye (ROX) are used together to improve the repeatability and reliability of the SERS signals. We found that the SERS signal of EVAGreen was reduced by intercalation into DNA amplicons of a polymerase chain reaction on the silver nanowire stacked-glass fiber filter substrate, whereas that of ROX stayed constant.

Bone marrow preconditioning using cyclophosphamide (CP) is generally used for bone marrow transplantation (BMT). However, because of CP's hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, additional fludarabine (FDR) administration and a reduced dose of CP are used for reduced-intensity preconditioning. Recently, preclinical studies using non-human primates (NHPs) were performed to induce immune tolerance after solid organ transplantation by conducting BMT simultaneously.

The role of zinc finger and BTB domain containing 7A (ZBTB7A) in oncogenesis has been shown to be context-dependent, participating in pro-oncogenic or oncosuppressive mechanisms by directly regulating gene transcription or by interacting with other regulatory proteins. Alterations in ZBTB7A expression have been associated with worse prognosis. We examined ZBTB7A protein expression in breast carcinoma tissue samples and analyzed its clinical and prognostic significance.

Background/aims: Early detection and intervention may alter the disease course of subcortical vascular cognitive impairment (SVCI). Patients with SVCI have white matter ischemia that disrupts connections between the cortex and subcortical gray matter and therefore manifest various symptoms such as motor disturbances and behavioral/cognitive dysfunction. Reduced vocal loudness, or hypophonia, is one of the common motor symptoms of SVCI, but few studies have systematically investigated it in this patient population.

Intensive longitudinal studies, such as ecological momentary assessment studies using electronic diaries, are gaining popularity across many areas of psychology. Multilevel models (MLMs) are most widely used analytical tools for intensive longitudinal data (ILD). Although ILD often have individually distinct patterns of serial correlation of measures over time, inferences of the fixed effects, and random components in MLMs are made under the assumption that all variance and autocovariance components are homogenous across individuals.

The differences in how our brain is connected are often thought to reflect the differences in our individual personalities and cognitive abilities. Individual differences in brain connectivity has long been recognized in the neuroscience community however it has yet to manifest itself in the methodology of resting state analysis. This is evident as previous studies use the same region of interest (ROIs) for all subjects.

On the use of continuous flash suppression for the study of visual processing outside of awareness.

Front Psychol

July 2014

Department of Psychology, Vanderbilt University Nashville, TN, USA ; Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Seoul National University Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The interocular suppression technique termed continuous flash suppression (CFS) has become an immensely popular tool for investigating visual processing outside of awareness. The emerging picture from studies using CFS is that extensive processing of a visual stimulus, including its semantic and affective content, occurs despite suppression from awareness of that stimulus by CFS. However, the current implementation of CFS in many studies examining processing outside of awareness has several drawbacks that may be improved upon for future studies using CFS.
