SAGE Open Med

March 2021

Department of Surgical and Perioperative Sciences, Urology and Andrology, Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden.

Objectives: The aim was to describe the patients' experience of undergoing prostatic artery embolization.

Methods: A retrospective qualitative interview study was undertaken with 15 patients of mean age 73 years who had undergone prostatic artery embolization with a median duration of 210 min at two medium sized hospitals in Sweden. The reasons for conducting prostatic artery embolization were clean intermittent catheterization (n = 4), lower urinary tract symptoms (n = 10) or haematuria (n = 1).

Intravenous (IV) iron therapy is widely used in iron deficiency anaemias when oral iron is not tolerated or ineffective. Administration of IV-iron is considered a safe procedure, but severe hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) can occur at a very low frequency. Recently, new guidelines have been published by the European Medicines Agency with the intention of making IV-iron therapy safer; however, the current protocols are still non-specific, non-evidence-based empirical measures which neglect the fact that the majority of IV-iron reactions are not IgE-mediated anaphylactic reactions.

Aims: Role of right atrial mechanics has not been studied in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH). We sought to investigate the correlation between the right sided, particularly right atrial mechanics, hemodynamic parameters, and functional capacity prior to initiation of treatment.

Methods And Results: Twenty-five subjects (63 ± 17 years, 13 males) with newly diagnosed IPAH by right heart catheterization (RHC) underwent speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) of the right ventricle (RV) and right atrium (RA).

Intravenous iron is widely used for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia when oral iron is inappropriate, ineffective or poorly tolerated. Acute hypersensitivity reactions during iron infusions are very rare but can be life-threatening. This paper reviews their frequency, pathogenesis and risk factors, and provides recommendations about their management and prevention.

Aim: To study the connection between reaction to soy milk and IgE sensitization to Gly m 4.

Methods: Four subjects who experienced unforeseen and severe symptoms after the ingestion of soymilk were studied.

Results: All children were birch pollen allergic, had high IgE responses to the PR-10 proteins from birch and soybean, Bet v 1 and Gly m 4.

A transitory deposit of a fibrin-like material in the anterior chamber following extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is described. In two studies, one retrospective of 352 operations and one prospective of 189 operations, the fibrinoid reaction was observed in 17% and 11% of the eyes, respectively. The reaction appeared in the early postoperative period in an otherwise quiet eye and the signs varied from a few threads in the pupil area to a dense pupillary membrane in front of the IOL.
