Stem cells have been widely exploited as remedial agents in regenerative medicine due to its tremendous potential in treatment of various debilitating diseases. In spite of this fact, there is need of a reliable, clinically applicable cell tracker for deciphering the homing and distribution of stem cells post-transplantation. Researchers have proposed the use of superparamagnetic magnetite (FeO) nanoparticles for in vivo and in vitro tracking and imaging of stem cells.

Department of Chemistry, Sunandan Divatia School of science, SVKM's NMIMS (Deemed-to-be) University, Vile Parle-West, Mumbai, 400056, Maharashtra, India. Electronic address:

Acetyl- Keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) is a pentacyclic triterpenic acid found in gum resin of Boswellia serrata. Even though it is shown to have anti-inflammatory activity, its bioavailability gets limited due to its poor aqueous solubility and permeability. The present study, hence, deals in enhancement of the intestinal absorption of AKBA from total boswellic acid fraction (TA fraction) using cyclodextrin (CD) and poloxamer solid dispersion (PXM SDs) formulations.

Knowledge and understanding of the stability profile of a drug is important as it affects its safety and efficacy. In the present work, besifloxacin, a new, fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, was subjected to different forced-degradation conditions as per International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines such as hydrolysis (acid, base and neutral), oxidation, thermal and photolysis. The drug degraded under acidic, basic, oxidative and photolytic conditions while it was found to be stable under dry heat and neutral hydrolytic conditions.

Biodiesel production from microalgae has been researched extensively and attempted to commercialize on a large scale, but there are major hurdles in the production process like harvesting and low lipid content, which should be studied to enhance the process and make it economical. Present study aimed to improve the lipid productivity of Chlorella minutissima and Chlorella pyrenoidosa by modifying the carbon and nitrogen content of the medium. Both organisms were grown in BG11 medium for the first 6 days and thereafter grown in a modified BG11 medium completely deprived of nitrogen for 2 to 10 days.

Ordered Mesoporous C N with a Combined Triazole and Triazine Framework and Its Graphene Hybrids for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR).

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

December 2018

Global Innovative Center for Advanced Nanomaterials (GICAN), School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, The University of Newcastle, Callaghan, NSW, 2308, Australia.

Mesoporous carbon nitrides (MCN) with C N stoichiometry could find applications in fields ranging from catalysis, sensing, and adsorption-separation to biotechnology. The extension of the synthesis of MCN with different nitrogen contents and chemical structures promises access to a wider range of applications. Herein we prepare mesoporous C N with a combined triazole and triazine framework via a simple self-assembly of 5-amino-1H-tetrazole (5-ATTZ).

H-Ras oncogene plays a critical role in the transformation of normal cells to a malignant phenotype through constitutive activation of the GTP bound protein leading to uncontrolled cell proliferation in several human cancers. Thus, H-Ras oncoprotein serves as an excellent target for anticancer drug discovery. To identify novel H-Ras inhibitors, we performed structure-based virtual screening of the Maybridge HitFinder™ library using Schrodinger suite.

Physiological stress can bring major molecular and cellular change to a living cell which further decide its survival or tolerance to the stress exposure. Cyanobacteria like Anabaena has been shown to tolerate high levels of different stresses like oxidative, desiccation, UV, and gamma radiation. They are able to withstand and recover remarkably without any lethal mutation when exposed to high doses of gamma radiation or prolonged duration of desiccation.

Introduction: Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) chaperones are indispensable to lung cancer cells for their survival and proliferation. In this study we evaluated and compared anticancer potential of methylene blue (MB) as an Hsp70 inhibitor, novobiocin (NB) a well-known Hsp90 inhibitor and their combination.

Methods: In vitro evaluation was done by cell viability assays, fluorescent staining, and flow cytometry analysis using A549 non-small cell lung cancer cells.

Desiccation and radiation stress tolerance in cyanobacteria.

J Basic Microbiol

October 2018

Department of Biological Sciences, Sunandan Divatia School of Science, NMIMS (Deemed-to-be) University, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai, India.

Cyanobacteria are among the oldest living organisms on this planet, existing since more than 3 billion years. They are ideal organisms for investigating biological processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, circadian rhythm, photoregulation of gene expression, developmental gene rearrangements, and specialized cell differentiation. They are nearly ubiquitous in distribution, have colonized a wide range of ecosystems including soil, air, dry rock, and aquatic systems, and even occupy extreme niches that are inaccessible to other organisms.

Arsenic and its various forms have been in use in ancient Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years. Arsenicals have gained importance for having remedial effects for various diseases from syphilis to cancer thus highlighting its role as a therapeutic agent even though it has been labelled as a potential 'poison'. The ability of arsenic, specifically arsenic trioxide, to treat acute promyelocytic leukaemia has radically changed the perception of this poison and has been the main factor for the re-emergence of this candidate to Western medicine for the treatment of leukaemia and other solid tumours.
