Lipid-extracted microalgae (LEM, KCTC 12236BP), a solid waste by-product obtained from algal biodiesel production, is typically considered a rich source of antioxidant compounds, including phenolic compounds. The purpose of this study was to apply a statistically-based methodology to enhance the extraction of total phenolic compounds (TPCs) and antioxidant activity (AA) from LEM and to verify the production of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a bioactive material, under optimum conditions. The optimal extractions of TPC and AA were explored by varying the key variables, including the extraction temperature, ethanol concentration, extraction time, and ultrasonic power, through statistical optimization.

Biorenovation is a microbial enzyme-catalyzed structural modification of organic compounds with the potential benefits of reduced toxicity and improved biological properties relative to their precursor compounds. In this study, we synthesized a novel compound verified as formononetin 7--phosphate (FMP) from formononetin (FM) using microbial biotransformation. We further compared the anti-inflammatory properties of FMP to FM in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW264.

Overcoming NADPH product inhibition improves D-sorbitol conversion to L-sorbose.

Sci Rep

January 2019

Department of Chemical Engineering, Konkuk University, 1 Hwayang-Dong, Gwangjin-Gu, Seoul, 05029, Republic of Korea.

Gluconobacter oxydans sorbitol dehydrogenase (GoSLDH) exhibits a higher catalytic efficiency than other L-sorbose producing enzymes. During the reaction catalysed by GoSLDH, NADP is reduced to NADPH and D-sorbitol is oxidized to L-sorbose. However, GoSLDH activity is inhibited by the NADPH (K = 100 μM) formed during the enzymatic reaction.

Deactivation of aminoglycosides by their modifying enzymes, including a number of aminoglycoside -phosphotransferases, is the most ubiquitous resistance mechanism in aminoglycoside-resistant pathogens. Nonetheless, in a couple of biosynthetic pathways for gentamicins, fortimicins, and istamycins, phosphorylation of aminoglycosides seems to be a unique and initial step for the creation of a natural defensive structural feature such as a 3',4'- dideoxy scaffold. Our aim was to elucidate the biochemical details on the beginning of these C3',4'-dideoxygenation biosynthetic steps for aminoglycosides.

Combinatorial approach for improved cyanidin 3-O-glucoside production in Escherichia coli.

Microb Cell Fact

January 2019

Department of Life Science and Biochemical Engineering, SunMoon University, 70 Sunmoon-ro 221, Tangjeong-myeon, Asan-si, Chungnam, 31460, Republic of Korea.

Background: Multi-monocistronic and multi-variate vectors were designed, built, and tested for the improved production of cyanidin 3-O-glucoside (C3G) in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). The synthetic bio-parts were designed in such a way that multiple genes can be assembled using the bio-brick system, and expressed under different promoters in a single vector. The vectors harbor compatible cloning sites, so that the genes can be shuffled from one vector to another in a single step, and assembled into a single vector.

The nature of precursor phenomena in the paraelectric phase of ferroelectrics is one of the main questions to be resolved from a fundamental point of view. Barium titanate (BaTiO₃) is one of the most representative perovskite-structured ferroelectrics intensively studied until now. The pretransitional behavior of BaTiO₃ single crystal grown using a solid-state crystal growth (SSCG) method was investigated for the first time and compared to previous results.

Electrical Properties of YBaCuO Ceramic Oxides Using Electrodeposit.

J Nanosci Nanotechnol

March 2019

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Gangdong University, Eumseong, Chungbuk, 27600, Korea.

In this paper, an alternating voltage of 60 Hz and (25-120) V/cm was proposed to be applied for subsidiary source deposition, so that the fabricated thin film showed uniform surface morphology with less voids and cracks, and , zero of 90 K and a critical current density of 3,320 A/cm². Compared to the superconducting thin film fabricated by a single constant electric field, the film fabricated by the subsidiary alternating electric field showed an improvement in the critical current density from (2,250 to 2,319) A/cm², showing that the latter is superior to the former. In particular, it is noteworthy that it was performed by the subsidiary electric field with the condition of commercial frequency and low electric field, rather than high voltage and frequency, of over 300 V and 150 Hz, respectively.
