Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how effective metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is in diagnosing infections related to marine trauma at a hospital in Zhuhai, analyzing data from 14 patients over a 3-year period.
  • - Most patients (78.6%) had marine-related injuries, while infections were confirmed through a combination of culture and mNGS methods, with a significant recovery rate following surgical intervention and antibiotic treatment.
  • - The findings highlight that mNGS is valuable for diagnosing water-exposed infections and can help identify multiple pathogens, improving treatment guidance for severe infections with unknown causes.

Department of Orthopaedics Surgery, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yet-sun University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious disease characterized by hemorrhage, edema, local ischemia and hypoxia, inflammatory reaction, and degeneration of the injured spinal cord, which lacks effective clinical treatments. We design a PEG-SH-GNPs-SAPNS@miR-29a delivery system to repair impaired spinal cord by building a regenerative microenvironment for the recruitment of endogenous neural stem cells. The miR-29a, as an axonal regeneration-related miRNA that overexpression of miR-29a significantly inhibits the expression of PTEN and promotes axonal regeneration of the injured spinal cord.

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Basic and Translational Research of Bone and Joint Degenerative Diseases, Guangxi Biomedical Materials Engineering Research Center for Bone and Joint Degenerative Diseases, Department of Orthopedics, Affiliated Hospital of Youjiang Medical University for Nationalities, Baise, Guangxi, 533000, China.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe neural tissue damage and motor/sensory dysfunction. Since the injured spinal cord tissue has limited self-regeneration ability, several strategies, including cell therapy, drug delivery, and tissue engineering scaffold implantation, have been employed to treat SCI. However, each of these strategies fails to obtain desirable outcomes due to their respective limitations.

Here, the successful transformation of graphitic carbon with a high degree of graphitization and a nanoflake structure from pyrolytic tire carbon black was demonstrated. First, amorphous carbon black with a porous structure was obtained after pyrolysis and simple preacid treatments. Subsequently, the carbon black was converted into a highly graphitic structure at a relatively low temperature (850 °C) through a facile electrochemical route using molten salt, which is ecofriendly and has high potential for large-scale graphitization compared to conventional incineration techniques.

Introduction: We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of intravesical mitomycin compared with gemcitabine on the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Methods: A systematic literature search up to November 2021 was done and 6 studies included 389 subjects with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer at the start of the study; 197 of them were provided with intravesical-mitomycin and 192 with intravesical gemcitabine. The studies reported the relationships about the effect of intravesical mitomycin compared with gemcitabine on the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

Zinc ion batteries have been extensively studied with an aqueous electrolyte system. However, the batteries suffer from a limited potential window, gas evolution, cathode dissolution, and dendrite formation on the anode. Considering these limitations, we developed an alternative electrolyte system based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) because of their low cost, high stability, biodegradability, and non-flammability, making them optimal candidates for sustainable batteries.

The rechargeable aluminum-ion battery (AIB) is a promising candidate for next-generation high-performance batteries, but its cathode materials require more development to improve their capacity and cycling life. We have demonstrated the growth of MoSe three-dimensional helical nanorod arrays on a polyimide substrate by the deposition of Mo helical nanorod arrays followed by a low-temperature plasma-assisted selenization process to form novel cathodes for AIBs. The binder-free 3D MoSe-based AIB shows a high specific capacity of 753 mAh g at a current density of 0.

A three-dimensional (3D) composite consisting of nickel-cobalt (Ni-Co) dual hydroxide nanoneedles (NCDHNs) grown on a carbon nanotube (CNT) material, denoted as CNTs@NCDHNs, was designed using a facile one-step hydrothermal method. This composite was further fabricated into electrodes, which exhibited high rate capability and long cycle life. Comparative analysis of the electrochemical performance between 3D CNTs@NCDHNs electrodes and Ni-Co hydroxide electrodes revealed that the high rate capability and long cycle life of the CNTs@NCDHNs are due to a synergistic effect.

Electrostatically Charged MoS/Graphene Oxide Hybrid Composites for Excellent Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2018

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Processing and Recycling of Non-Ferrous Metals and School of Materials Science and Engineering , Lanzhou University of Technology, Lanzhou 730050 , P. R. China.

We demonstrate, for the first time, a new method of fabricating hybrid MoS/poly(ethyleneimine)-modified graphene oxide (PEI-GO) composites assembled through electrostatically charged interaction between the negatively charged MoS nanosheets and positively charged PEI-GO in an aqueous solution. The GO can not only improve the electronic conductivity of the MoS/PEI-GO composites, leading to an excellent charge-transfer network, but also hamper the restacking of MoS nanosheets. The composition ratios between MoS and PEI-GO were also optimized with the highest specific capacitance of 153.

Macrophages infiltrating the allografts are heterogeneous, consisting of proinflammatory (M1 cells) as well as antiinflammatory and fibrogenic phenotypes (M2 cells); they affect transplantation outcomes via diverse mechanisms. Here we found that macrophage polarization into M1 and M2 subsets was critically dependent on tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), respectively. In a heart transplant model we showed that macrophage-specific deletion of TRAF6 (LysM Traf6  ) or mTOR (LysM Mtor ) did not affect acute allograft rejection.

Structural disorder and transformation in crystal growth: direct observation of ring-opening isomerization in a metal-organic solid solution.

September 2014

MOE Laboratory of Bioinorganic and Synthetic Chemistry, State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies, Lehn Institute of Functional Materials, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Sun Yet-Sun University , Guangzhou 510275, People's Republic of China ; State Key Laboratory of Organometallic Chemistry, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences , Shanghai 200032, People's Republic of China.

A rare example is reported in which discrete Ag2 L 2 ring and (AgL)∞ chain motifs [L = N,N'-bis(3-imidazol-1-yl-propyl)-pyromellitic diimide] co-crystallize in the same crystal lattice with varying ratios and degrees of disorder. Crystal structures obtained from representative crystals reveal compatible packing arrangements of the cyclic and polymeric isomers within the crystal lattice, which enables them to co-exist within a crystalline solid solution. A feasible pathway for transformation between the isomers is suggested via facile rotation of the coordinating imidazolyl groups.

Myopia is the most frequent cause of distance impairment in the world and is creating an alarming global epidemic with deleterious ramifications for the quality of life and economic health of individuals and nations as a whole. In addition to being immediately disadvantageous, myopia increases the risk of serious disorders such as myopic macular degeneration, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataract and is a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness across many countries. The reduction in age of onset of myopia is of great concern since the earlier the onset, the more myopic the individual will become, with all the attendant increased risks of accompanying debilitating eye conditions.
