Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how maternal serum iodine concentrations (SIC) relate to thyroid function and various birth outcomes among pregnant women aged 18-45 in the Huizhou Mother-Infant Cohort.
  • It includes a significant sample size of 1558 mothers, analyzing SIC and thyroid health using advanced testing methods, and features case-control studies comparing mothers with gestational diabetes and newborns with small for gestational age to healthy controls.
  • Results show that high SIC in the first trimester is linked to a higher risk of small for gestational age babies and negatively affects gestational weight gain and birth size, while also indicating strong diagnostic potential for thyroid dysfunction.*

Article Synopsis
  • * The research utilized genetic data on various types of FAs from the UK Biobank and COPD-related outcomes from the FinnGen consortium to analyze potential associations.
  • * Findings indicate that higher levels of saturated fatty acids (SFA) are linked to an increased risk of pneumonia related to COPD, but no strong associations were found for other types of fatty acids.

Reference Intervals of Serum Iodine Concentration in Chinese Pregnant Women.

Biol Trace Elem Res

June 2024

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health, Department of Nutrition, School of Public Health, Sun Yat-sen University (North Campus), Guangzhou, 510080, People's Republic of China.

The study aims to establish trimester-specific reference ranges for serum iodine (SI) in Chinese pregnant women and explore its associations with maternal and infantile thyroid function. Apparently healthy pregnant women were enrolled during their first antenatal visit. Fasting venous and spot urine samples were collected for determining serum and urinary iodine (UI) levels by a validated inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the relationship between circulating vitamin D levels and various clinical traits using a method called Mendelian randomization to account for confounding factors.
  • Results indicate that lower genetically determined vitamin D is associated with decreased bone mineral density, higher total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, while positively linked to lymphocyte counts.
  • The research concludes that while vitamin D affects certain metabolic markers, it does not show a direct causal connection to clinical diseases.

A clinical model and nomogram for early prediction of gestational diabetes based on common maternal demographics and routine clinical parameters.

J Obstet Gynaecol Res

November 2022

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health, School of Public Health, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, P.R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • Developed a risk prediction model for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in Chinese women using maternal demographics and clinical factors, finding a 17.2% prevalence rate among the studied population.
  • The model utilized multivariable logistic regression and demonstrated good consistency and predictive ability through various statistical tests, including ROC curve analysis and cross-validation.
  • A user-friendly nomogram was created for clinical practice, providing an effective tool for predicting GDM risk based on common maternal characteristics.

Background: Although social isolation has been associated with a higher mortality risk, little is known about the potential different impacts of face-to-face and non-face-to-face isolation on mortality. We examined the prospective associations of four types of social isolation, including face-to-face isolation with co-inhabitants and non-co-inhabitants, non-face-to-face isolation, and club/organization isolation, with all-cause and cause-specific mortality separately.

Methods: This prospective cohort study included 30,430 adults in Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study (GBCS), who were recruited during 2003-2008 and followed up till Dec 2019.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of whole soy and purified daidzein on markers of thyroid function in Chinese postmenopausal women who were equol-producers. Total 270 eligible women were randomized to either one of the three isocaloric supplements: 40 g soy flour (whole soy group), 40 g low-fat milk powder +63 mg daidzein (daidzein group) or 40 g low-fat milk powder (placebo) daily for 6 months. Serum thyroid markers were tested at baseline and 6 months for thyroid stimulating hormone, free triiodothyronine, reverse triiodothyronine and free thyroxine (FT4).

Hypouricemic and nephroprotective roles of anthocyanins in hyperuricemic mice.

Food Funct

February 2019

Department of Nutrition, School of Public Health, Sun Yat-Sen University (North Campus), Guangzhou, 510080, P. R. China.

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a universal metabolic disorder characterized by a high level of uric acid in the serum. Anthocyanins (ACNs) are a group of natural flavonoids that have shown favourable bioactivities in the metabolic syndrome but the effect on uric acid metabolism remains underexplored. The present study investigated the hypouricemic effects of ACNs in a mice model and further studied the potential mechanisms.

Macrophage polarization has a vital impact on the progression of atherosclerosis (AS). Protocatechuic acid (PCA), a flavonol, displays notable atheroprotective effects, but its mechanisms have not been clearly defined. We investigated whether PCA attenuated AS by regulating macrophage polarization.
