Self-passivated CuVO as a universal photoelectrode material for reliable and accurate photoelectrochemical sensing.

Chem Commun (Camb)

July 2021

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Emergency Test for Dangerous Chemicals, Institute of Analysis, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, National Analytical Center, Guangzhou, China.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection has attracted intensive attention during the past decade. Currently, most research focuses on improving the sensitivity and selectivity of the PEC sensor, but the issue of the stability of the photoelectrode material under the testing environment is often ignored or lacks in-depth investigation. Herein, we develop a novel CuV2O6 photoelectrode exhibiting superior stability under the testing environment through self-passivation.

Objective: Programmed death 1 and its ligand 1 (PD-1/PD-L1) immunotherapy is promising for late-stage lung cancer treatment, however, the response rate needs to be improved. Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in immunotherapy sensitisation and has been shown to possess immunomodulatory potential. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether the combination treatment of ginseng polysaccharides (GPs) and αPD-1 monoclonal antibody (mAb) could sensitise the response by modulating gut microbiota.

Cryopreservation techniques have become an essential part of assisted reproduction technology. Embryos may be cryopreserved for several years before transfer, and the safety of long-term cryopreservation needs to be considered. This dose-response meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate whether there were dose-response relationships between the storage time of cryopreserved embryos and pregnancy outcomes such as survival rate, implantation rate, miscarriage rate, clinical pregnancy rate, and congenital malformation rate.

Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) binding (termed SUMOylation) emerged as the inducer for the sorting of bioactive molecules into extracellular vesicles (EVs), triggering lymphangiogenesis and further driving tumor lymph node (LN) metastasis, but the precise mechanisms remain largely unclear. Here, we show that bladder cancer (BCa) cell-secreted EVs mediated intercellular communication with human lymphatic endothelial cells (HLECs) through transmission of the long noncoding RNA ELNAT1 and promoted lymphangiogenesis and LN metastasis in a SUMOylation-dependent manner in both cultured BCa cell lines and mouse models. Mechanistically, ELNAT1 induced UBC9 overexpression to catalyze the SUMOylation of hnRNPA1 at the lysine 113 residue, which mediated recognition of ELNAT1 by the endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) and facilitated its packaging into EVs.

Objective: Isoflavones and lignans are phytoestrogens present in plant-based foods, which have a potential preventive effect on breast carcinogenesis. The effects of phytoestrogens on breast cancer may differ according to the hormonal environment. This case-control study aimed to investigate the association between serum phytoestrogens and odds of breast cancer among Chinese pre- and postmenopausal women.

New screening approach to detecting congenital syphilis in China: a retrospective cohort study.

Arch Dis Child

March 2021

Department of Medical Statistics, School of Medicine, Jinan University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China

Background: Diagnosis of congenital syphilis (CS) is not straightforward and can be challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of an algorithm using timing of maternal antisyphilis treatment and titres of non-treponemal antibody as predictors of CS.

Methods: Confirmed CS cases and those where CS was excluded were obtained from the Guangzhou Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of syphilis programme between 2011 and 2019.

Background: Nephronophthisis-related ciliopathies (NPHP-RC) account for the majority of cases of monogenetically caused end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in children. Exploring the correlation between the phenotype and genotype of NPHP-RC is helpful for early diagnosis and management. We investigated the phenotype and genotype spectra of NPHP-RC in a Chinese multicentre cohort.

Brain Activity during Visual and Auditory Word Rhyming Tasks in Cantonese-Mandarin-English Trilinguals.

Brain Sci

December 2020

Department of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510080, China.

It is unclear whether the brain activity during phonological processing of second languages (L2) is similar to that of the first language (L1) in trilingual individuals, especially when the L1 is logographic, and the L2s are logographic and alphabetic, respectively. To explore this issue, this study examined brain activity during visual and auditory word rhyming tasks in Cantonese-Mandarin-English trilinguals. Thirty Chinese college students whose L1 was Cantonese and L2s were Mandarin and English were recruited.

Background: A key step in embryo implantation is the adhesion to and invasion of the endometrium by the blastocyst trophectoderm. The envelope proteins of HERV-W and -FRD (human endogenous retrovirus-W and -FRD), syncytin-1 and syncytin-2, are mainly distributed in the placenta, and play important roles in the development of the placenta. The placenta originates from the trophectoderm of the blastocyst.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) makes it possible to treat intralobar sequestration (ILS) more minimally invasive compared with conventional open surgery. However, this procedure is challenging to expose and isolate the aberrant arteries of ILS and the risk of bleeding is high. Herein, we developed a modified VATS procedure in which the aberrant vessels are treated in the last step of lobectomy, rather than at the beginning.

Introduction: The prevalence of hyperuricaemia in peritoneal dialysis patients is quite high. Studies have demonstrated a correlation between hyperuricaemia and cardiovascular disease and treatment of hyperuricaemia reportedly reduces cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic kidney disease. However, whether hyperuricaemia treatment benefits cardiovascular outcomes in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients is not yet known.

Dietary cholesterol drives fatty liver-associated liver cancer by modulating gut microbiota and metabolites.

Gut

April 2021

State Key Laboratory of Digestive Disease, Institute of Digestive Disease and The Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China

Article Synopsis
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is linked to increased rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with the study focusing on how dietary cholesterol affects its progression through changes in gut microbiota.
  • Mice were fed different diets for 14 months, revealing that a high-fat/high-cholesterol diet led to severe liver disease stages, including steatosis and HCC, associated with gut microbiota imbalances.
  • The study concluded that dietary cholesterol alters gut bacteria and their metabolites, contributing to liver disease, but this effect can be mitigated by cholesterol-lowering medications like atorvastatin.
