Tuberculosis (TB) is the second deadliest infectious disease worldwide. Current TB diagnostics utilize sputum samples, which are difficult to obtain, and sample processing is time-consuming and difficult. This study developed an integrated diagnostic platform for the rapid visual detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in breath samples at the point-of-care (POC), especially in resource-limited settings.

As the elite force of our immune system, T cells play a determining role in the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy. However, the clever tumor cells construct a strong immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) fortress to resist the attack of T cells. Herein, a magnesium peroxide (MP)-based biomimetic nanoigniter loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) and metformin (MET) is rationally designed (D/M-MP@LM) to awake T cell-mediated cancer immunotherapy via comprehensively destroying the strong TME fortress.

Food freshness monitoring and volatile amine detection are key to food safety. In this study, we demonstrated the applicability of mixed-valence rhenium oxide quantum dots (MV-ReOQDs), synthesized via the hydrothermal reaction of α-cyclodextrin and rhenium ion precursors, in triethylamine (TEA) sensing. Spectroscopic correlation techniques showed that the developed MV-ReOQDs possessed mixed-valent rhenium, α-cyclodextrin as capped ligand, partially carbonized surface, and amorphous phase structure.

The persistence and ecological impact of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water sources necessitate effective and energy-efficient treatment solutions. This study introduces a novel approach using cerium dioxide (CeO) electrodes enhanced with oxygen vacancy (O) to catalyze the defluorination of PFAS. By leveraging the unique affinity between cerium and fluorine-containing species, our approach enables adsorptive preconcentration and catalytic degradation at low oxidation potentials (1.

The knowledge on the life cycle of flaviviruses is still incomplete, and no direct-acting antivirals against their infections are clinically available. Herein, by screening via a Zika virus (ZIKV) replicon assay, we found that the N-terminus of NS2A exhibited great tolerance to the insertions of different split fluorescent proteins (split-FPs). Furthermore, both ZIKV and dengue virus encoding a split-FP-tagged NS2A propagated efficiently, and the split-FP-tagged ZIKVs had good genetic stability.

Manual annotation of ultrasound images relies on expert knowledge and requires significant time and financial resources. Semi-supervised learning (SSL) exploits large amounts of unlabeled data to improve model performance under limited labeled data. However, it faces two challenges: fusion of contextual information at multiple scales and bias of spatial information between multiple objects.

Sorting nexins (SNXs) as the key regulators of sorting cargo proteins are involved in diverse diseases. SNXs can form the specific reverse vesicle transport complex (SNXs-retromer) with vacuolar protein sortings (VPSs) to sort and modulate recovery and degradation of cargo proteins. Our previous study has shown that SNX3-retromer promotes both STAT3 activation and nuclear translocation in cardiomyocytes, suggesting that SNX3 might be a critical regulator in the heart.

To investigate the potential of an MRI-based radiomic model in distinguishing malignant prostate cancer (PCa) nodules from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)-, as well as determining the incremental value of radiomic features to clinical variables, such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level and Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) score. A restrospective analysis was performed on a total of 251 patients (training cohort, n = 119; internal validation cohort, n = 52; and external validation cohort, n = 80) with prostatic nodules who underwent biparametric MRI at two hospitals between January 2018 and December 2020. A total of 1130 radiomic features were extracted from each MRI sequence, including shape-based features, gray-level histogram-based features, texture features, and wavelet features.

Thin-film composite polyamide (TFC PA) membranes hold promise for energy-efficient liquid separation, but achieving high permeance and precise separation membrane via a facile approach that is compatible with present manufacturing line remains a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the use of lignin alkali (LA) derived from waste of paper pulp as an aqueous phase additive to regulate interfacial polymerization (IP) process for achieving high performance nanofiltration (NF) membrane. Various characterizations and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that LA can promote the diffusion and partition of aqueous phase monomer piperazine (PIP) molecules into organic phase and their uniform dispersion on substrate, accelerating the IP reaction and promoting greater interfacial instabilities, thus endowing formation of TFC NF membrane with an ultrathin, highly cross-linked, and crumpled PA layer.

Nucleosome is the basic structural unit of the genome. During processes like DNA replication and gene transcription, the conformation of nucleosomes undergoes dynamic changes, including DNA unwrapping and rewrapping, as well as histone disassembly and assembly. However, the wrapping characteristics of nucleosomes across the entire genome, including region-specificity and their correlation with higher-order chromatin organization, remains to be studied.

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exhibits a strong asymmetry between warm El Niño and cold La Niña in amplitude and temporal evolution. An El Niño often leads to a heat discharge in the equatorial Pacific conducive to its rapid termination and transition to a La Niña, whereas a La Niña persists and recharges the equatorial Pacific for consecutive years preconditioning development of a subsequent El Niño, as occurred in 2020-2023. Whether the multiyear-long heat recharge increases the likelihood of a transition to a strong El Niño remains unknown.

Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive primary brain tumor with glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) enforcing the intra-tumoral hierarchy. Plasma cells (PCs) are critical effectors of the B-lineage immune system, but their roles in glioblastoma remain largely unexplored. Here, we leverage single-cell RNA and B cell receptor sequencing of tumor-infiltrating B-lineage cells and reveal that PCs are aberrantly enriched in the glioblastoma-infiltrating B-lineage population, experience low level of somatic hypermutation, and are associated with poor prognosis.

This study introduces an innovative bio-based sorbent bead crafted by integrating chitosan (CS) biopolymers, Fe(NO3)3 and polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) via glutaraldehyde crosslinking. The primary focus of this study was the concurrent separation of diverse tetracycline antibiotics (TCs), followed by rigorous reversed-phase liquid chromatography analysis. The fabricated CS/Fe@PDA sorbent beads were comprehensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, revealing a surface rich in active carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and oxygen (O) moieties.
