Introduction: NRG/RTOG 1203 compared 3-D conformal radiotherapy (3D CRT) to intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in patients with endometrial or cervical cancer requiring post-operative radiotherapy after hysterectomy. The purpose of this study was to report the first quality-adjusted survival analysis comparing the two treatments.
Methods: NRG/RTOG 1203 randomized patients having undergone hysterectomy to either 3DCRT or IMRT.
Importance: Spine metastasis can be treated with high-dose radiation therapy with advanced delivery technology for long-term tumor and pain control.
Objective: To assess whether patient-reported pain relief was improved with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) as compared with conventional external beam radiotherapy (cEBRT) for patients with 1 to 3 sites of vertebral metastases.
Design, Setting, And Participants: In this randomized clinical trial, patients with 1 to 3 vertebral metastases were randomized 2:1 to the SRS or cEBRT groups.
JCO The purpose of this update was to determine differences in patient-reported chronic toxicity and disease outcomes with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) compared with conventional pelvic radiation. Patients with cervical and endometrial cancers who received postoperative pelvic radiation were randomly assigned to conventional radiation therapy (CRT) or IMRT. Toxicity and quality of life were assessed using Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC) bowel and urinary domains, and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General.

Introduction Mass casualty incidents (MCI) are low-frequency, high-risk events that disrupt the day-to-day operations of medical centers. Day-to-day protocols are insufficient for effectively managing MCI events, creating a need to develop and test MCI-specific protocols. The aim of this project was to utilize interviews to gain insight into staff experience and perspective on MCIs and their institution's response plans.

Background: Laparoscopic liver resections can result in decreased length of stay. We looked at our hospital experience with 24 hours or less stay after minor laparoscopic liver resections.
Methods: Patients who underwent laparoscopic minor hepatectomy (less than 3 hepatic segments resection) and stayed 24 hours or less in the hospital were selected from prospectively kept hepatobiliary surgery database.
Background And Aim: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are reported to improve postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing a routine protocol and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing hepatic and pancreatic resections at our institution.
Methods: A total of 99 consecutive patients at a single institution managed with a similar ERAS protocol were divided into the "early" (50 patients) and "late" (49 patients) cohorts. Both cohorts were statistically identical in demographics and range of surgical procedures performed.

The management of patients after cardiothoracic surgery can be very complex. Variabilities exist in hemodynamic status after cardiac surgery and the use of cardiopulmonary bypass - all of which can have a significant impact on myocardial Frank-Starling curves. Typically, invasive monitoring with pulmonary artery catheters is used to assess the complex physiology that these patients experience in the perioperative setting.

Intensive therapeutic lifestyle modification programs, such as the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP), reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. However, there are little data on how participation in CHIP with a household member can affect CVD biomarkers. This study focuses on the benefit of joint participation of household members in CHIP in order to have a better outcome in improving CVD risk factors compared with lone or individual participation.

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) has been described as early as 1972 [Hill 1972]. Though a subsequent randomized trial showed no survival benefit over conventional mechanical ventilation [Zapol 1979], protective ventilation strategies and evolving extracorporeal technology improvements have led to a resurgence in the use of ECMO for patients with ARDS. The most recent randomized clinical trial, Conventional Ventilation or ECMO for Severe Adult Respiratory Failure (CESAR), showed a significant mortality reduction in ARDS patients who were treated with ECMO [Peek 2009].

Purpose: Comparison of overall survival (OS) between stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and other treatments for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer is confounded by differences in age, performance status, and medical comorbidity. We sought to define the most robust measurement for this population among 5 indices: age, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, Adult Comorbidity Evaluation 27, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and age-adjusted CCI (CCIa).
Methods And Materials: A total of 548 patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer treated with SBRT were analyzed.
Background: Ovarian cancer survivors experience a wide range of treatment side effects that can negatively affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Physical activity has been shown to improve HRQOL and cancer-related fatigue (CRF) for other cancer survivors; however, no large randomized controlled trial (RCT) has been conducted for ovarian cancer.
Methods: This study examined the impact of a six-month RCT of exercise vs attention control on change in HRQOL (Short Form Health Survey-36) and CRF (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Fatigue Scale) in ovarian cancer survivors.

Interprofessional education (IPE) using simulations provides a rich environment for mastery learning and deliberate practice. The debriefing phase is identified as the most valuable by learners, yet investigation into the most effective format for debriefing interprofessional (IP) groups has largely gone unexplored. To determine the best practices in IP simulation debriefing, we compared perceived effectiveness of in-person versus teledebriefing, and single versus IP co-debriefer models according to 404 Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare Student-Version (DASH-SV) scores from students in medicine, nursing, and respiratory therapy (n = 135) following three critical care simulations.
