Introduction: The objective of this study is to compare the effects of conventional monopolar electrosurgery (CMES) and low-thermal plasma kinetic cautery (PKC) on complications such as bleeding, abnormal wound healing, pain, and drainage in patients who underwent on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Methods: This retrospective clinical study included 258 patients undergoing CABG; the patients were randomized to PKC (PEAK PlasmaBlade, n=153) and CMES (n=105) groups. The patients' clinical data were examined retrospectively for biochemical variables, postoperative drainage, post-surgery erythrocyte suspension transfusion count, surgical site pain examined with visual analogue scale (VAS), and wound healing.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common form of supraventricular arrhythmia following ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The CHA2DS2-VASc and CHADS2 scores are used to estimate thromboembolic risk in cases of AF. Their usefulness in predicting the development of AF in patients presenting STEMI is unknown.

Although hydatid cysts are often seen in the liver and lungs, they may be present in many organs. Even in countries where hydatid cyst disease is endemic, the occurrence of pancreatic hydatid cysts is rare. Pancreatic hydatid cysts are important for the differential diagnosis of patients with pancreatic pseudocysts and cystic carcinomas.

Patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) may go undiagnosed or be misclassified due to the insidious nature and wide spectrum of the disease. The available several classification criteria emphasize glandular findings. We aimed to analyze the efficiency of various classification criteria sets in patients diagnosed on the clinical basis by expert opinion and to compare those pSS patients who fulfilled these criteria with those who did not.

Immunopathologic reactions may occur during toxocariasis due to tissue invasion and destruction by the secretions of larvae containing various enzymes with broad spectrum. The aim of this study was to search for autoantibodies such as anti-nuclear (ANA), anti-mitochondrial (AMA), anti-smooth muscle (ASMA), anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic (ANCA), anti-myeloperoxidase (MPO) and liver-kidney microsomal type 1 (LKM-1) antibodies in patients with toxocariasis, in order to investigate the role of toxocariasis as a trigger factor for autoimmune reactions. Forty patients (22 were male; mean age: 35.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) can play an important role as the underlying mechanism for the development and recurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF). In addition, AF itself can lead to atrial structural and/or electrophysiologic remodeling by activating the RAS. This remodeling serves as an arrhythmogenic substrate for AF.

The relation between the duration of human fasciolosis and development of humoral immune response has not yet been clarified. This study was conducted to investigate the relation between different immunoglobulin isotypes and the period of disease in fasciolosis patients and also to evaluate the diagnostic value of immunoglobulin isotypes. The 50 patients (30 female, 20 male; age range: 18-70 years) included to the study were evaluated in 3 groups (3-6 months, 7-12 months and > 12 months) according to the duration of their signs and symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, eosinophilia, detection of eggs in stool and radiological findings.

Among proteins secreted from activated eosinophil granulocytes, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) is the most useful tool for the follow-up of inflammatory diseases. Since ECP level reflects the eosinophil activation, it gives valuable information about disease activity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the possible relation between ECP levels and symptoms and laboratory findings of cystic echinococcosis (CE) and to evaluate the role of this protein in the diagnosis of CE.

Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibodies are used as highly specific and sensitive markers in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in recent years. The aim of this prospective and cross-sectional study was to measure the levels of anti-CCP and rheumatoid factor (RF) in patients with RA and osteoarthritis, and healthy volunteers to evaluate the specificity and possible diagnostic value of anti-CCP and RF, as well as their correlations with parameters of disease activity. Thirty-four patients with RA (mean age: 53.

GB virus C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) is a recently identified flavivirus, which has been frequently detected in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. In this study, the prevalence of HGV-RNA and antibodies to E2 envelope antigen (anti-E2) which is a marker of past infection, have been investigated in the samples of patients with HCV and HBV infections, and the prevalence rates were compared with the control group. The study group consisted of 50 patients with HBV and 50 patients with HCV infections, who did not have any risk for parenteral transmission, and 60 healthy control subjects.
