Bilingual children's language skills are strongly influenced by exposure to each of their languages, among other linguistic, environmental, and cognitive factors. In the speech and language therapy clinic, it is difficult to disentangle developmental language disorders from insufficient exposure. Dynamic assessment, which directly tests the learning potential of children, offers a promising solution for this dilemma.

The major challenges facing our healthcare system foster the emergence of new inter-professional roles such as the Specialized Nurse Practitioner. These professionals, recognized by a legal framework, hold advanced practice medical and nursing skills obtained after a 120-credit Master's-level university training. In 2018, the Emergency Department (ED) of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois was one of the first departments in Switzerland to implement such a role.

[SGLT2 inhibitors : promises, but for whom ?].

Rev Med Suisse

December 2024

In type 2 diabetes, the launch of gliflozins (or SGLT2i), like each new therapeutic class, is generating a great deal of hope and is being heavily marketed. The pivotal studies show a beneficial effect on the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and, to a lesser extent, on the decline in renal function. The impact on physiological factors (weight, glycated hemoglobin, blood pressure) is modest, and the side-effect profile is relatively heavy, particularly in the elderly (frequent urogenital infections, ketoacidosis, etc.

Tumor lysis syndrome is a metabolic emergency resulting from a massive destruction of cancer cells. This is often associated with hematological malignancies, such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and acute leukemia, but the incidence tends to increase for solid tumors with the development of oncological treatments. Due to a poor prognosis, it is essential to recognize this syndrome early.

Service d'angiologie et hémostase, Département de médecine, Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève, 1211 Genève 14.

Systemic thrombolysis is the first-line treatment for patients with high-risk pulmonary embolism or with haemodynamic deterioration on anticoagulation alone; however, it is associated with a high bleeding risk. Mechanical thrombectomy may significantly reduce right ventricular dysfunction without exposing the patient to systemic bleeding complications. No randomized trials comparing the two treatments are available to date.

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) are common in adolescents and young adults. They may be secondary to inherited bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand disease or platelet function disorders. These conditions are often under-recognized, leading to diagnostic delays and inadequate management.

When a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is suspected, management should begin with a well-defined diagnostic approach based on clinical evaluation and pre-test probability, D-dimer testing, and venous ultrasound. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, it is important to differentiate between proximal and distal DVT, as their treatment strategies differs. While numerous robust studies with a high level of evidence are available for proximal DVT, the optimal management of distal DVT remains debated.

Understanding preoperative health-related quality of life in rotator cuff tear patients: role of patients' characteristics.

BMC Musculoskelet Disord

Schulthess Klinik, Research and Development Department - Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Zurich, Switzerland.

Background: Assessing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a widely employed method in orthopedics to evaluate patient well-being and measure the effectiveness of surgical interventions. Understanding the relationship between specific baseline factors and preoperative HRQoL can help clinicians identify patients at risk for low quality of life and thus, develop preventive strategies that adequately address individual patient needs. The objective was to assess associations between baseline factors and preoperative HRQoL in patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR).

In Côte d'Ivoire, there is a high intensity of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors which may threaten successful vector control. Molecular studies of the target site mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) show that the gene frequencies of these mutations are high, widely spread across Côte d'Ivoire, and even fixed in some areas. To further characterize insecticide resistance in Côte d'Ivoire beyond target site mutations, the metabolic resistance mechanism was explored.
