Strontium isotope (Sr/Sr) analysis with reference to strontium isotope landscapes (Sr isoscapes) allows reconstructing mobility and migration in archaeology, ecology, and forensics. However, despite the vast potential of research involving Sr/Sr analysis particularly in Africa, Sr isoscapes remain unavailable for the largest parts of the continent. Here, we measure the Sr/Sr ratios in 778 environmental samples from 24 African countries and combine this data with published data to model a bioavailable Sr isoscape for sub-Saharan Africa using random forest regression.

The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is the screening tool for perinatal depression, and its cut-off score varies according to context and population. In Cameroon, no study has yet defined a cut-off score or the prevalence of perinatal depression in adolescent mothers. Our aim is to determine the cut-off for teenage mothers in Cameroon.

Schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar (BD) and major depression disorder (MDD) are severe psychiatric disorders that are challenging to treat, often leading to treatment resistance (TR). It is crucial to develop effective methods to identify and treat patients at risk of TR at an early stage in a personalized manner, considering their biological basis, their clinical and psychosocial characteristics. Effective translation of theoretical knowledge into clinical practice is essential for achieving this goal.

Background And Purpose: External drainage represents a well-established treatment option for acute intracerebral hemorrhage. The current standard of practice includes post-operative computer tomography imaging, which is subjectively evaluated. The implementation of an objective, automated evaluation of postoperative studies may enhance diagnostic accuracy and facilitate the scaling of research projects.

[Foetal paraspinal neuroblastoma: A case report of autopsy findings].

Ann Pathol

December 2024

Institute of Tissue Medicine and Pathology, University of Bern, 3008 Bern, Suisse.

Neuroblastoma is a rare tumour originating from neural crest cells, primarily occurring in the adrenal glands and sympathetic ganglia, with prenatal diagnosis often complicated by the difficulty in distinguishing it from other foetal abdominal or paraspinal masses. We present a case of foetal neuroblastoma in a 26-year old woman who, at 36 weeks of gestation, experienced absent foetal movements, leading to ultrasound confirmation of foetal demise with associated effusions. An emergency caesarean section revealed a stillborn male foetus with a previously undetected encapsulated mass in the posterior mediastinum, which was confirmed as neuroblastoma through histopathological analysis.

Background: Malaria remains a threat in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, where it is endemic and represents the leading cause of hospital consultations, morbidity and mortality. The strong climatic variations that exist between coastal and savannah areas of Côte d'Ivoire suggest that vector control interventions should be scheduled according to the eco-epidemiological diversity. This study evaluates bioecological parameters of vectors and malaria transmission in two health districts, one coastal and one central of Côte d'Ivoire.

End-stage liver diseases have an increasing impact worldwide, exacerbated by the shortage of transplantable organs. Recognized as one of the promising solutions, tissue engineering aims at recreating functional tissues and organs . The integration of bioprinting technologies with biological 3D models, such as multi-cellular spheroids, has enabled the fabrication of tissue constructs that better mimic complex structures and functionality of organs.

[Foot and ankle pathologies: how to prescribe the right imaging].

Rev Med Suisse

December 2024

Service d'orthopédie et de traumatologie, Département de l'appareil locomoteur, Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois, 1011 Lausanne.

Musculoskeletal diseases of the foot and ankle are common reasons for primary care consultations. The purpose of this article, which focuses on the seven most common foot and ankle pathologies seen in general practice, is to help general practitioners perform an initial radiological assessment that allows for a correct diagnosis and can then be used by the specialist without the need for repeat imaging. This approach optimizes collaboration between the general practitioner and the specialist, reduces costs, and avoids unnecessary patient radiation.

[Concept of coronal alignment in total knee arthroplasty].

Rev Med Suisse

December 2024

Service de chirurgie orthopédique et traumatologie de l'appareil moteur, Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève, 1211 Genève 14.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most performed orthopedic surgeries worldwide. For many years, TKA implants were positioned according to a systematic approach known as mechanical alignment, which prioritized implant survival over the restoration of a more physiological knee. A high dissatisfaction rate of 20% after knee prosthesis has led to a rethinking of coronal alignment and a move towards a more personalized approach.

Aortic Stenosis and Coronary Artery Disease: Decision-Making Between Surgical and Transcatheter Management.

Circulation

December 2024

Department of Cardiology (D.T., T.P., J.L., S.W.), Cardiovascular Center, Bern University Hospital, Inselspital, University of Bern, Switzerland.

Aortic stenosis (AS) and coronary artery disease (CAD) frequently coexist and share pathophysiological mechanisms. The proportion of patients with AS and CAD requiring revascularization varies widely because of uncertainty about best clinical practices. Although combined surgical aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting has been the standard of care, management options in patients with AS and CAD requiring revascularization have expanded with the advent of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
