Introduction: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is recommended prior to bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) procedures to optimize patient outcomes. However, there's a lack of clear guidance on PR content. The aim of our study is to examine the effect of adding inspiratory muscle training (IMT) to standard PR before BLVR on exercise capacity, dyspnea, fatigue level and quality of life.

Objective: Heart failure is a leading cause of death and the most common diagnosis leading to hospitalization. Its awareness is lower than that of other cardiovascular diseases, both in the general population and among patients with heart failure (HF). This study aimed to establish the current level of knowledge about HF in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) in Türkiye.

Is there a change in the view of treatment for primary spontaneous pneumothorax?: The effect of thoracic CT and autologous blood pleurodesis: a retrospective cohort study.

Medicine (Baltimore)

June 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Yedikule Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed long-term outcomes of patients treated for primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) between 2003 and 2020, focusing on recurrence rates and treatment effectiveness based on CT scans.
  • Out of 251 cases, most patients were young males, with a significant recurrence rate occurring mainly within the first year.
  • The findings suggest that treatment should be tailored: autologous blood pleurodesis is effective for patients without bullae or blebs, while video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is recommended for those with these conditions to reduce recurrence rates.

Background: Adequate respiratory muscle strength is required to meet the increased ventilatory demand during physical activities. However, it is not well known whether respiratory muscle strength is impaired in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between respiratory muscle strength and exercise capacity, quality of life, physical activity level, and fatigue in IPF patients.

Aim: Pulmonary Thromboembolism (PTE) occurs as a result of occlusion of one or more of the pulmonary artery branches by thrombus and is an important cause of right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Selenoprotein P (SePP) and soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2 protein (sST2) are two new biomarkers that have previously been the subject of various studies in heart failure. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic and prognostic potential of SePP and soluble sST2 levels in patients with acute PTE.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify risk factors influencing the mortality rates of patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) by analyzing data from ICU follow-ups and treatment records over an eight-year period.
  • A total of 91 patients were analyzed, showing a mean age of 49.9 years, with complications including a significant link between higher APACHE II scores and increased mortality risk, particularly due to vasospasm.
  • Key findings suggested that longer periods on mechanical ventilation and the presence of vasospasm significantly increased mortality risk, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for better patient outcomes.

Comprehensive analysis of the prognostic role of laboratory indices in advanced lung cancer patients.

Asia Pac J Clin Oncol

June 2024

Department of Chest Disease, Yedikule Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, İstanbul, Turkey.

Objective: Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer-related death, is diagnosed mostly in advanced stages, and 5-year survival is approximately 5.8%. It is critical to identify reliable prognostic factors to optimize treatment responses, guide therapeutic strategies and pave the way to new research.

Introduction: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a severe condition that is characterized by recurrent partial or complete breathing interruptions during sleep, leading to insulin resistance, microvascular complications, and cardiovascular complications. It is of great importance to know the impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), which is prevalent in the world and in our country, Turkey, leads to significant mortality and morbidity, significantly affects the quality of life, and requires continuous follow-up, on sleep in patients with OSAS and to raise awareness on this issue. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of diabetes on sleep duration and sleep architecture in patients with OSAS and to investigate the relationship between OSAS severity and DM control.

Background: Disseminated tuberculosis (dTB) disease is associated with a significant burden of morbidity and mortality and it requires improved awareness among clinicians. Case reports revealing the clinical and microbiological characteristics of dTB patients will help us to extend our knowledge of dTB. In our study, we have documented dTB cases followed for 6 years and revealed patients' clinical characteristics.

Pneumothorax is a condition that describes the presence of air between the visceral and parietal pleura sheets and the consequent collapse of the lungs. The collapse of the lungs can be partial or total and can present in different clinical stages, such as a high-pressure pneumothorax that can cause a mediastinal shift. Pneumomediastinum is the presence of free air between the mediastinal tissues due to various causes.

Background: Body mass index (BMI) and serum albumin (ALB) level are long-established markers that reflect the nutritional status and eventually the prognosis of cancer patients. The objective of the study was to determine the clinical significance of these factors and specify their roles in outcomes compared with performance status (PS) and weight loss (WL), which are considered the most significant patient-related prognostic factors in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) treated with platinum-etoposide-based chemotherapy.

Methods: A total of 378 patients with SCLC were enrolled in the study and analyzed retrospectively.

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Yedikule Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Türkiye.

Carinal resections are frequently performed for carinal tumors. Resection of the carina due to distal tracheal tumors may be required, and the extension of main bronchial tumors to the carina may lead to carinal resection. This is one of the rarely performed operations in thoracic surgery, which is technically challenging and has a high complication rate.
