Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has been known for its high propensity of metastasis to unusual locations, and jaw bones (JBs) are one among those sites. The literature has reported several studies analyzing metastatic tumors to the oral region, but very little research work has been published to date to analyze solely JB metastasis (JBM) via RCC. The goal of this study was to examine the published cases of metastasis to JBs from RCC as the sole primary source till date.

Evolving concepts in intracranial pressure monitoring - from traditional monitoring to precision medicine.

Neurotherapeutics

January 2025

Division of Neurosciences Critical Care, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA; Department of Neurology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA; Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA; Department of Neurosurgery, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, USA. Electronic address:

A wide range of acute brain injuries, including both traumatic and non-traumatic causes, can result in elevated intracranial pressure (ICP), which in turn can cause further secondary injury to the brain, initiating a vicious cascade of propagating injury. Elevated ICP is therefore a neurological injury that requires intensive monitoring and time-sensitive interventions. Patients at high risk for developing elevated ICP undergo placement of invasive ICP monitors including external ventricular drains, intraparenchymal ICP monitors, and lumbar drains.

Recent Advancements and Applications of Nanosensors in Oral Health: Revolutionizing Diagnosis and Treatment.

Eur J Dent

December 2024

Department of Dentistry, Oral Health Institute, Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar, College of Dental Medicine, Qatar University, Doha, Qatar.

Advances in the field of nanomaterials are laying the foundation for the fabrication of nanosensors that are sensitive, selective, specific, cost-effective, biocompatible, and versatile. Being highly sensitive and selective, nanosensors are crucial in detecting small quantities of analytes and early diagnosis of diseases. These devices, operating on the nanoscale, detect signals, such as physical, chemical, optical, electrochemical, or biological, and then transduce them into a readable form.

Background: Oral cancer is the sixth most common cancer, and 90% of them are oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). As most OSCC are asymptomatic and are only detected at an advanced stage, the 5-year survival rate is only 50%. Thus, using novel prognosticators can minimise mortality and morbidity associated with OSCC.

Introduction: The maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities which vary in size and shape. Sinus radiography has been widely used in the determination of the gender of the individual, especially in forensic investigation for human identification and sexing of individuals. The advanced radiographic techniques like cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), especially the axial and coronal sections, have been considered as a subtle concept in forensic odontology.

Validating the GO-FAR score: predicting in-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes in the Middle East.

Int J Emerg Med

October 2024

The Research Office, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAE University, Al-Ain, Ain, United Arab Emirates.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to validate the Good Outcome Following Attempted Resuscitation (GO-FAR) score in patients without Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) orders, focusing on those who experienced in-hospital cardiac arrest at Al Ain Hospital from January 2017 to December 2019.
  • Out of 366 patients analyzed, the majority were male with a median age of 70; most had non-shockable rhythms and cardiac/respiratory causes for their arrests, resulting in a low survival rate and variable neurological outcomes.
  • Findings suggest that a GO-FAR score below 4 is a reliable predictor of survival with good neurological function, indicating its usefulness in a diverse patient

Analyzing missingness patterns in real-world data using the SMDI toolkit: application to a linked EHR-claims pharmacoepidemiology study.

BMC Med Res Methodol

October 2024

Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the challenges of missing data in confounding variables when using real-world data, specifically in pharmaceutical research comparing cardiovascular outcomes between two types of diabetes medications in older adults.
  • Utilizing the Structural Missing Data Investigations (SMDI) toolkit, researchers analyzed the missingness patterns of important health metrics like HbA1c and BMI from electronic health records.
  • Results indicated significant missing data (63.6% for HbA1c and 16.5% for BMI) and demonstrated that missingness could be predicted and managed through statistical techniques, leading to improved estimates of medication effects.

Current implant therapy is a frequently employed treatment for individuals who have lost teeth, as it offers functional and biological advantages over old prostheses. Concurrently, active exploration of intervention strategies aims to prevent the progression of peri-implant diseases and manage the existing peri-implant tissue damage. Indian Society of Periodontology has recognized the need for systematic documents to update the everyday clinical practice of general dental practitioners and has provided evidence-based consensus documents, namely good clinical practice recommendations from time to time to raise the oral health-related awareness and standards of oral health-care delivery across the country.
